SABC knock-on leaves fans fuming

The SABC did not broadcast the first Test between the Springboks and England because negotiations for the rights to show it broke down with SuperSport.

Instead of showing a delayed broadcast of the game at 6:30pm on SABC2 as advertised, an episode of Smallville was shown, which resulted in outrage from rugby fans on social media networks.

SABC spokesman Kaiser Kganyago told the Cape Argus that events would often be placed in the TV guide to reserve space, even when the right to broadcast them were still being negotiated. He said the SABC was ‘hopeful’ that it could obtain the rights to the second and third Tests of the series.

SuperSport communications manager Clinton van der Berg told keo.co.za that SuperSport ‘had made every effort to ensure that the match was made available on the same basis as it usually is’.

@Mr Black(Mr Black)-4: South Afrocans who cannot afford DSTV perhaps?

Rugby should be taken to all population groups in SA, especially Springbok games. This type of pathetic setup is not on, and it is not just rugby, while back soccer games were also missed ude to SABC incompetance.

Hate to say this but how can we contemplate having a team from the EC to attract the “black” youngsters to the game when we don’t even show our National team on the public broadcaster ?

I am all for the Kings , fact is I champion the cause here but the **** that SARU is giving us is ridiculous. They sold our beautiful game to the highest bidder !

    What do you expect?

    Their business isn’t sport.

It’s party political propaganda, subsidised by the taxpayer.

  • 8.rangerman: Reply to this comment

@sparticus(sparticus)-6: see thats the problem isnt it?

you blame saru immediately for this when the two parties involved were supersport and sabc?

supersport basically pays for south african rugby through enormous amounts of money generated from tv rights.
much like it does for football after sabc also dropped the ball on that one.

sabc are incompetent like every other government department barring sars which is only neccescary to take as much as possible from the sa taxpayer.

you know it, we know it, but if you want to deflect then go ahead, intelligent people will not buy it though ok?

@rangerman(rangerman)-8: And who sold that rights to supersport ? Who negotaiited the whole deal ? Google Andy Marino’s and read up on how they sold the Bok brand for greed my friend.

National Bok rugby should be available to the people of the country , it is not a sporting event for the elite only. While the problem may be with SABC and DSTV where the one charges too much or the other does not want to play enough the blame lies in SARU for getting us into that position. Bok rugby was sold to a private broadcaster who charges people to watch their sport , nothing wrong with that except when its the National team games.

When Pienaar held the cup in 95 he said “No David, it was not for 60 000 but for 43-million people”. If that was today he would have said “No David, it was not for 60 000 but for those elite with DSTV access”

@sparticus(sparticus)-16: all very idealistic bud but who do you think pays for the players salaries?

    the support staff?

    logistics?

    bus, plane tickets?

    kit etc etc etc?

sure, sponsors contribute but tv rights are MASSIVE. or do you want to go back to the amateur days because sure as s h it, unless sam ramsammy or tubby reddy are involved in some way, the boks are getting no lotto money and dont get subsiudised by the taxpayer unlike bafana bafana.

you are living in a dream world and trying to excuse sabc incompetence.

  • 19.viewer: Reply to this comment

Its really pathetic of the SABC to allow this state of affairs. They scored massive numbers of viewers during last year’s WC. The number of people watching
DSTV is relatively small. The demand for any rugby on free to air TV is massive. Even this delayed live arrangement doesn’t deter non subscribers. A “corporation” with billions of taxpayer cash yearly can’t even show 1 feature match a week (be it VC, CC or S15)

@rangerman(rangerman)-18: True SABC is pathetic and I argued this before especially when they showed the grand prix back in the day. My point is not SABC , my point is SARU sold us down this road.

They have zero power and the power lies with DSTV who has the monopoly to charge and do like they want with our rugby. The dream world is where we think that DSTV have our rugby’s best interest at heart. They out to make a buck (like they should) and dont really care about taking the game to the public.

Who do you think pays for the players salaries ? We might depend a lot of advertisements and broadcasting but we not dependant on them in my opinion.

I don’t know how SABC and DSTV work but when the Lions played the Sharks at Ellispark the outside broadcasting Van HD was SABC, so it looks like Supersport use the SABC broadcasting vans if they are overloaded,I think SABC wants to show the rugby for free.

@sparticus(sparticus)-21: i dont understand what you are asking?

“Who do you think pays for the players salaries ? ”

the subscribers of dstv of course????????/

who do you think pays? the government?

no bud, as far as i understand, sarugby operates as a pro entity (arguable i know) and depends on revenue to pay for everything related to the game.

they are COMPLETELY dependant on advertising and broadcasting as far as i know?

  • 24.the artist formerly known as gunther: Reply to this comment

    @sparticus(sparticus)-21:

    nonsense.

sponsorships are a drop in the ocean compared to the broadcast rights.

saru does no different than any other rugby union around the world.

    wake up man.

  • 25.sparticus: Reply to this comment

@rangerman(rangerman)-23: Mmmmmmm , I shall have some more thinking on this then. I still hate the fact that we sold out to DSTV and they have so much control over our rugby.

Maybe I am just naive and live in this bubble of a perfect world. Could explain the rainbow’s I see every morning :)

no worries man, i want ALL saffas to have access too. i dig greeting other bok fans of all colours in game week, proudly wearing their bok colours and have defo noticed a rise in black support for the boks based on jerseys being worn.

its awesome and must be encouraged.

Rugby is the loser. Australia has done the same to Rugby union. Watch the other footy / rugby codes flourish while rugby union slowly dies.

All games the Springboks play should by law have to be aired on sabc (govt tv)….delayed is fine and they should have to pay dstv the same as the pay for the bafana soccer.

This is why rugby is used in race wars as an elitist sport cause it is not on govt tv and the average SA citizen cannot have the pleasure of watching and supporting, ffs rugby has won 2 world cups and only a fraction of the population really got to enjoy and watch cos they didn’t really have a clue about rugby.

How is the game supposed to grow without exposure to the majority of the population, and this is not piswily bafana that is an embarrassment that continuous to lose but something that can uplift the population as they experience the highs and lows of Sprinbok rugby. Am not the most eloquent, but most of you will get my frift I hope.
