Baby Boks lick wounds

Baby Bok coach Dawie Theron has made three changes to his starting line-up for the Junior World Championship semi-final against Argentina on Sunday.

There are two injury-enforced changes, which see wing Tshotsho Mbovane and hooker Mark Pretorius promoted to the run-on side for the clash at Newlands. They come in for Patrick Howard (hamstring) and James Thomas (facial fracture) respectively, who will play no further part in the tournament as they’ll spend several weeks on the sidelines.

Hooker Francois Marias, who replaced Thomas in the SA U20 squad, provides cover on the bench.

Tighthead prop Olivier Kebble has been relegated to the reserves after a poor scrumming performance against England last Tuesday, and Maks van Dyk will wear the No 3 jersey.

Flank Wiaan Liebenberg and flyhalf Tony Jantjies have recovered from wrist and leg injuries respectively, which kept them out of the match against England. They take loose forward Khaya Majola and utility back Marias Schmidt’s spots on the wood.

Outside centre William Small-Smith retains the captaincy in Liebenberg’s extended absence from the starting XV.

Baby Boks - 15 Dillyn Leyds, 14 Paul Jordaan, 13 William Small-Smith (c), 12 Jan Serfontein, 11 Tshotsho Mbovane, 10 Handrè Pollard, 9 Vian van der Watt, 8 Fabian Booysen, 7 Pieter Steph du Toit, 6 Shaun Adendorff, 5 Ruan Botha, 4 Paul Willemse, 3 Maks van Dyk, 2 Mark Pretorius, 1 Steven Kitshoff.
Subs: 16 Franco Marais, 17 Allan Dell, 18 Oliver Kebble, 19 Braam Steyn, 20 Wiaan Liebenberg, 21 Abrie Griesel, 22 Tony Jantjies, 23 Raymond Rhule.

Still a very big problem in the RSA rugby mind-set is they call the bench ‘reserves’!

    Rugby is 22man 85min rugby…

Thankfully Meyer sees this… even if his current selection of the bench leave something to be desired…

Not sure it’s the right move to move Maks van Dyk into the starting line-up at this late stage. Was playing some excellent rugby as an impact player, but starting is a different story altogether, and it seems a bit unfair to expect him to step up now after sitting on the bench most of the tournament so far.
