Abendanon hat-trick secures tour win

England fullback Nick Abendanon scored three tries to help his team to a 57-31 win over the SA Northern Barbarians in Potchefstroom.

After the host side surged into a 10-3 lead in the first quarter thanks to a try from inside centre Joubert Engelbrecht and a penalty and conversion from fullback JC Roos, Abendanon crossed the chalk on three occasions in the first half to set the platform for victory. No 8 Ben Morgan contributed to the strong assault, while flyhalf Charlie Hodgson added four conversions and a penalty before the break to secure a 31-10 half-time lead.

England grabbed four more tries in the second stanza to seal the convincing victory. Replacement wing Jonny May secured a brace and outside centre Anthony Allen dived over. The tourists were also awarded a penalty try.

Speedster Deon Scholtz and scrumhalf Shaun Venter (2) scored consolation tries for the Barbarians.
