South Africa 14 England 14
23 Jun 2012
GARETH DUNCAN brought you live scoring and commentary from the Test in PE.
FULL TIME: SOUTH AFRICA 14 ENGLAND 14
80 mins: England have possession in the Springbok half, and this time, they build an opportunity for Farrell to win the game with a drop goal. The flyhalf dummies his first tryout in the pocket as the Springboks rush towards him. He takes a run. A few phases later, he pulls his attempt and the ball goes dead. The game ends in a draw.
78 mins: SILLY CLEAR OUT! Coetzee enters the ruck at the side, and is pinned. Costly error as the Springboks were building a platform for Steyn to attempt his second drop goal. England clear the ball to safety.
75 mins: MISSED DROP GOAL! The Springboks create some good momentum, but run out of options. Steyn gets some untidy service, but manages to fire away a drop goal attempt. But it falls wide.
72 mins: ENGLAND PENALTY! The Springboks concede a penalty at the scrum, and the visitors play the advantage. But nothing comes from it. Farrell lines up his second goal attempt, and converts the penalty. SCORES ARE LEVEL AT 14-14!
68 mins: It’s a rare England attack into the Springbok red zone, and the tourists build up 14 phases. But the South African defence holds up well. Only inside centre Manu Tuilagi makes a telling run, otherwise it was easy pickings for the hosts. England stalls, but are awarded a scrum. Great attacking platform.
62 mins: SPRINGBOK TRY! Reserve scrumhalf Ruan Pienaar was key in this attacking move as he provides quality and quick service, and makes the right choices. As the Springbok heavies gain some good ground, the Ulster man goes to the blindside and his long pass to Pietersen beats the English rush defence, which allows the wing to dive over unmarked. Steyn pulls his conversion, but South Africa are still ahead. SPRINGBOKS LEAD 14-11!
59 mins: After a frustrating period of play against 14 men, the Springboks win a penalty and find touch in the England red zone. They’ll be desperate to return with some points.
54 mins: The Springboks are becoming errant, especially at the lineouts. Bismarck du Plessis throws a skew through, and the hosts lose their third lineout on their own feed.
51 mins: YELLOW CARD! Big blow for England as they lose their captain to the sin bin. Hartley is penalised for disrupting at the breakdown illegally. England down to 14 men, can the Springboks capitalise?
49 mins: After just having regained the lead, England’s ill-discipline let them down as they concede a penalty in a kickable area. However, Steyn pushes his effort.
45 mins: ENGLAND PENALTY! Aplon catches a high up and under, but is faced with a strong finish from wing Chris Ashton. England arrive in numbers and win the penalty. Farrell converts. ENGLAND LEAD 11-9!
43 mins: Springboks swing the ball wide after a poor kick from England. No 8 Pierre Spies finds some space, but he’s scragged into touch by fullback Ben Foden.
SECOND HALF RESTART: Steyn kicks the restart into England 22m area, and it’s taken cleanly by Palmer. England clear.
HALF-TIME: SOUTH AFRICA 9 ENGLAND 8
40 mins: The half-time hooter goes as the Springboks have possession in centre field. Steyn decides to boot the ball into touch, and the two teams head for the tunnel. Springbok loosehead prop Beast Mtawarira says: ‘We’re looking good at times. We get near to the tryline, but we’re making errors.’
36 mins: FUMBLE! The Springboks gain some good metres with every ball carry from a midfield scrum. The forwards snipe the fringes while wing JP Pietersen is a key feature in this move. However, 5m from the tryline, lock Eben Etzebeth loses the ball in the tackle. England escape.
35 mins: Here will be no repeat of the blazing start in Jozi. The England defence is resilient today.
30 mins: The Springboks deliver their most convincing run on attack as they put together 10 phases. However, Walsh spots a knock-on at one of the rucks. And England survive.
27 mins: SPRINGBOK PENALTY! The hosts are in the lead for the first time in the match, as Steyn converts his third penalty. SPRINGBOKS LEAD 9-8!
26 mins: OUTSTANDING EFFORT! Aplon makes a strong tackle on Care, and turnsover the ball. The Springboks are on the front foot, before England impede illegally again. Walsh, with hand in his pocket, calls England skipper Dylan Hartley over. But he decides to give a final warning, instead of a sin binning.
25 mins: The Springboks are not looking convincing on attack as England are dominating the collisions. They’re struggling to break the opposition’s defensive line.
22 mins: South Africa break into English territory and the visitors are pinned again, for not rolling away. Referee Steve Walsh, who has already warned England, let’s this offence slide. Steyn takes a difficult penalty shot and it goes wide.
19 mins: England find themselves in a great attacking situation in the Springbok red zone. But they’re kept out phase after phase, before Farrell attempts a chip through the defensive line. However, Aplon tracks well and dots down for the 22m drop out.
16 mins: Early subsitution for England as Flood limps off with an injury. Owen Farrell gets an early run on.
15 mins: SPRINGBOK PENALTY! South Africa get their first attacking scrum soon after the restart. And after a few strong ball carries, the tourists are penalised for not rolling away, which disrupts the Springboks’ attacking flow. Steyn steps up and knocks over his second three-pointer. ENGLAND LEAD 8-6!
12 mins: ENGLAND TRY! South Africa are penalised for being offside. England scrumhalf Danny Care catches the defence sleeping, as he takes a quick tap. Tighthead prop Jannie du Plessis slips his tackle on the No 9, who forces his way over. Flood misses the conversion. ENGLAND LEAD 8-3!
11 mins: CHARGE DOWN! Steyn’s clearance is charged down by England lock Tom Palmer and the Springboks find themselves in a pressure situation. Some good cover tackles being made, but England are on the front foot.
7 mins: SPRINGBOK PENALTY! England are penalised for the first time in the match, after a brilliant chase from wing Bryan Habana. Fast recycling see the visitors caught off in an offside position. Morne Steyn lines up his first kick…and it’s over! Great start from the tee for the Springbok flyhalf. SCORES ARE LEVEL AT 3-3!
4 mins: Fullback Gio Aplon fails to snatch an up and under, and loses the ball forward. Hooker Bismarck du Plessis picks up the ball while retreating, and is penalised for being offside. However, Flood skews his second goal attempt.
2 mins: ENGLAND PENALTY! England run through the phases after a good scrum from both teams. However, openside flank Marcell Coetzee is pinned for not rolling away. Flood converts the penalty. ENGLAND LEAD 3-0!
KICK-OFF: England flyhalf Toby Flood starts the game with a high kick-off, and it’s taken in by Springbok lock Juandre Kruger. However, the second-rower drops the ball and the tourists have an early attacking platform.

@cab(cab)-396:
Hougie can’t kick from the back of the scrum at all, and that’s a skill all good scrumhalves should have, I’m not talking about Fourie kicking everthing but just relief kicks at the back of the scrum
Even the Pom’s scrumhalf kicked a few today, without taking a week to do it
And Joost could do it too

Two players who need to play the full 80 minutes:
Bismarck du Plessis
Heinrich Brussow
Only one of them played today, and only for circa 60 minutes

@willievz(willievz)-402:
Or you could bring on Brussouw when you take off Bismarck

@victoriabok(victoriabok)-401:
thats a fair point, but i dont believe u need a kicking scrumhalf at all if you have a potential running assett like hougaard – why would you? we;ve got a kicker at 10 and at 12. morne is a specialist kicker, that is why he is picked. play hougaard in an attacking capacity, let him snipe, let him play to his strengths, let him change the way ppl think a scrumhalf should play and cause the otehr team headaches in having to deal with it.
far as i know the greatest scrumhalf of all time was gareth edwards who was known for his running.

joost van der westhuizen, a scrumhalf, was the leading try-scorer in bok history, known for his strenght, speed and defense.

@willievz(willievz)-402: stop being soo fixated on Brussouw. How much of the All Blacks performance today was due to the role of the fetcher? they cleaned superbly this morning and forwards were too lazy today to work cohesively to do that. surprising since Potgieter and Spies play together for the Bulls

I hope that was Morne Steyn’s last game.

@Papoose(papaown)-406: The All Blacks did not have to defend nearly as much as the Boks today.
Our flankers made a lot of tackles today but failed to adequately contribute to the ruck after releasing the tackled player, which meant a smooth ruck ball for the English.

Wynand Olivier was by far the best SA player on the field last night, would have lost the game without his Defense and his line break that led o our only try!!
