Tew commits full support to rape investigation

New Zealand rugby chief Steve Tew said they would assist the South African police’s investigation into a rape accusation levelled at a member of its U20s team in every way they could.

The player in question, whom the NZRU refused to name, had reportedly voluntarily offered blood samples, fingerprints and a statement before being allowed to leave. He and his room-mate are at the centre of the incident where a 22-year-old Cape Town woman claims to have been raped on Friday night after the Junior World Championship final. Tew said his information was the room-mate was not present at the time of the alleged incident. Furthermore claims that four men were present were completely unfounded.

Tew confirmed the player was with the woman and said he was ‘very upset’ at the allegation. He added the case is being taken ‘incredibly seriously’.

‘An allegation of rape is as serious as it gets so the team, both players and management cooperated fully with the authorities in South Africa,’ Tew told Radio New Zealand. ‘We did not leave South Africa until we had their permission to and if there’s any further assistance they require we’ll continue to cooperate fully.

‘I understand at least one player provided some DNA samples to police. It may have been two, it may have been his room-mate because that’s the obvious connection that was made.’

Although the woman had made the allegation, her statement was that she could not remember anything about the incident, including who the person involved was, according to information the NZRU had received from South African police.

Tew said advice would be sought if South African police needed to speak to players further.

‘We’ll have to work that through and we’ll take advice from our government, because these things become a little more complicated with international law but our cooperation will absolutely be there,’ he said.

‘We’ll certainly review the situation at some point in time but right now, our focus is on making sure the police in South Africa have all the information and assistance they require to make sure this investigation is concluded their way.

‘Clearly there are two sides that are very concerned about this and we need to make sure that they’re both able to draw a conclusion as quickly as possible.’

I have always maintained I have a healthy respect for SA rugby, always will, but I wont sit back and see my country/team continually denigrated because they may be better then yours currently..

but you must admit, one comment from me seems to attract the worst SA bloggers, like moths to a flame.. so be it…

Here is Sheriff saying the girl was only going to there rooms at night, drunk to get a picture for here picture book. lol
**** me, that comment should be put amongst some of PDVs.
And now Sheriff with the gift of the likes of Sherlock holmes has said the guys is guilty.
Like the Crusaders with the eye gouging, they were guilty on here as well, what happened there again.
I suggest Sheriff you should leave the gut feeling out of it, as normally in most coubntries, a gut feeling is not guilty.

My feeling is that this chick is after a moment of fame. She was hoping for a bigger tip and now she’s crying wolf, damaging the careers of very promising players.
I hope this case gets investigated properly, and if the players are found innocent, this girl should be made an example of.

cool. so continually mocking someone about their parents death less than a month after they’ve laid them to rest is more than acceptable? considering I’d asked the blogger to stop more than a few times?

was I being over sensitive? could it in any way contribute to my current blogging style?

thanks for pointing out that everything is open slather on this blog. good to know. can’t wait till someone else loses a parent. I am going to make jokes for weeks about it

losing a parent is bad I know.
going t it for tat is not the solution
so if someone else loses a parent you will come out all guns blazing even tho they have never harmed you,you just want to “return serve”.
do not become like who you despise
may your healing be fast, tender and filled with good memories.

    this from another blog

Cape Town – A woman who accused a New Zealand Under-20 rugby player of raping her was not drinking, national police said on Tuesday.

“I never said she was drinking,” Colonel Vish Naidoo said, following a report claiming the woman had told police she had been drinking.

“The woman had little or no recollection of what had happened. It is in keeping with a crime of that nature, it can be expected. We are offering her therapy.”

He also reiterated that only one player, and not four as some media reports suggested, was the subject of investigation.

Police were called to a Cape Town hotel on Saturday morning when a 22-year-old woman claimed one of the “Baby Blacks” had raped her. Forensic experts arrived on the scene soon after to scour for samples.

New Zealand Rugby Union chief executive Steve Tew said in a report on Independent Online that one player, and possibly also a team-mate who was rooming with him, had provided DNA samples to police.

Naidoo refused to divulge any details of the investigation and said no charges had been laid.

so Fern, I may owe you an apology, she could very well have been drugged according to this report above…

Guys, if you read the police statement it doesn’t say that she wasn’t drinking. That’s what the Reporters have made of it.

The statement simply was “I never said she was drinking,” Colonel Vish Naidoo said, following an Agence France-Presse (AFP) report claiming the woman had told police she had been drinking.

He neither confirming nor denying anything. Basically all he’s saying is don’t put words in my mouth.

Since the investigation is at a sensitive stage I think it’s best not to speculate and to wait and see what comes out.
