Kings edge Boland
30 Jun 2012
The EP Kings downed the Boland Cavaliers 25-20 in the opening round of the Currie Cup First Division, while there were also wins for the Griffons, Leopards and SWD.
With the game close for 70 minutes, it took a late SP Marias try to steal it for the Kings in Wellington, the fullback diving over a ruck to score the decisive points of the game.
In George in Friday’s other match, SWD ran in six tries and Kurt Coleman kicked five conversions and two penalties in a 46-8 victory over the Border Bulldogs. The host’s pack was completely dominant and created an excellent attacking platform for their dangerous backs to exploit.
On Saturday in Potchefstroom, the Leopards earned a hard-fought 32-23 victory over the Pumas. Leopards winger Danie Dames scored a hat-trick in a match where only poor goal-kicking prevented the hosts from winning by a greater margin.
In Kempton Park the Griffons won a thriller 37-27 against the Valke. The latter scored five tries to the former’s four, two from Tertius Maarman in the last 10 minutes which earned an invaluable away win for them.
