Murray returns to Lions midfield
5 Jul 2012
Waylon Murray will start alongside Butch James in the centres when the Lions host the Rebels on Saturday.
Murray’s inclusion at No 13 allows Lionel Mapoe to move back to the wing. James Kamana is reinstated at fullback, while scrumhalf Michael Bondesio is promoted to the starting side.
Interim coach Johan Ackermann has retained the same starting pack that fronted the Stormers last week.
Lions – 15 James Kamana, 14 Lionel Mapoe, 13 Waylon Murray, 12 Butch James, 11 Anthonie Volminck, 10 Elton Jantjies, 9 Michael Bondesio, 8 Joshua Strauss (c), 7 Grant Hattingh, 6 Derick Minnie, 5 Franco van der Merwe, 4 Hendrik Roodt, 3 Jacobie Adriaanse, 2 Callie Visagie, 1 JC Janse van Rensburg
Subs: 16 Martin Bezuidenhout, 17 Ruan Dreyer, 18 Etienne Oosthuizen, 19 Jaco Kriel, 20 Ross Cronje, 21 JR Esterhuizen, 22 Ruan Combrinck

If my memory isn’t completely frazzled- didn’t this guy start for the Boks at 13 not THAT long ago? What happened to this dragon?
5 Jul 2012, 12:55 pm
@bangkok-bok(bangkok-bok)-1: INJURIES.
5 Jul 2012, 12:58 pm
What sort of injuries? It’s sad Transie as he used to be a household name- was big- good sidestep and fast. What i find the most shocking is how we have all forgotten about him- as if he’s a ghost of a bygone team- yet it wasn’t that long ago he was a regular in the Boks team.

cardinelli are you DRUNK?!! where is waylon’s name in the team you’ve posted below you “story”?

@bangkok-bok(bangkok-bok)-3: busted his knees more times than i can remember, was over-taken by terblanche & adi at the sharks…he and barritt were sublime around ’07
5 Jul 2012, 13:04 pm
@Transformation(Transformation)-4: Yeah, and I thought they were playing on Saturday.
Silly me…
5 Jul 2012, 13:07 pm
Mapoe looked great at 13 and it being wasted on the wing. Ackers fcking it up already.
5 Jul 2012, 13:08 pm
@Transformation(Transformation)-4:
cardenelli is so kak.
5 Jul 2012, 13:12 pm
@HHS(Hop Hop Spinnekop)-7: Should Mapoe join another union and if so which one and in what position? Stormers on the wing rather than Gio?
5 Jul 2012, 13:15 pm
good to see waylon back in action… always liked and rated this guy…
the lions midfield is suddenly one powerful unit…!!
5 Jul 2012, 13:16 pm
@bangkok-bok(bangkok-bok)-9:
hands off gio…
5 Jul 2012, 13:17 pm
@ufo(ufo)-10: just a pity one week too late. Good to see Kamana back too, could have, should have punished that mediocre team we fronted last week.
5 Jul 2012, 13:19 pm
@ufo(ufo)-11: I rate Gio! In S15 I like him at 15 tho- but not as a Bok 15
5 Jul 2012, 13:27 pm
this guy makes Jorrie & Earl look good! k@k op sy beste!
5 Jul 2012, 13:28 pm
@RL(RL)-12:
never really got the kamana thing… don’t see why they bought him or kept him… and that was when he was playing… but seems to be injured more often than not…
but hope he comes back strong and adds value to the lions gameplan…
@bangkok-bok(bangkok-bok)-13:
would not replace him in the stormers for just about anyone… you’d have a major riot on your hands if you did… newlands crowd loves him and you can hear the expectation and excitement build whenever he gets the ball…
would have him in my current bok team at 15 and lambie at 10…
5 Jul 2012, 13:37 pm
@ufo(ufo)-15: I’d personally have Joe at 15 before anyone.
5 Jul 2012, 13:48 pm
How could any coach select Bondesio to start at 9, this guy is the worst 9 I have seen in ages. Says alot for Ackerman as coach.
Why on earth is he not using Baby Bok Paul Willemse at lock?
5 Jul 2012, 13:49 pm
@stormersboy(stormersboy)-16: Same. I prefer Joe to Gio at FB. Gio on the wing for me.
Though Hurdles needs some more games to continue his form’s upwards trajectory. Maybe AC needs to do some rotation before the semis.
5 Jul 2012, 13:49 pm
@Transformation(Transformation)-4: @BrumbiesBoy(BrumbiesBoy)-6: What is happening to this site?
5 Jul 2012, 13:52 pm
@stormersboy(stormersboy)-16:
yeah… it’s a tough one… i really like and rate them both…
but going on the current team as selected for the english tour…
for stormers would keep gio on the wing and joe at 15…
can’t see heyneke picking both in the same bok team though…
5 Jul 2012, 13:53 pm
@Michael(mikeybrass)-18: Hurdles can start in the Currie Cup. Let the team gain momentum and gel together now in time for the semi’s.
5 Jul 2012, 13:54 pm
@RL(RL)-12: lol funny
5 Jul 2012, 13:57 pm
@Sasuke(Sasuke)-21: It’s a balance with making sure that they are not overplayed halfway into a very long season with the risk of getting injured too. Hurdles is good enough to come on and help close out the next match.
5 Jul 2012, 14:06 pm
@Michael(mikeybrass)-23: they could rotate against the Rebels.
5 Jul 2012, 14:08 pm
@bangkok-bok(bangkok-bok)-3:
yes, he was a bok but to say he was a regular in the team is a bit of an exhaggeration, sir.
the guy played 3 tests for sa and i’m not even sure he started in all of them.
anyway, good luck to him going forward.

Lions fans, say goodbye to Pat Cilliers. Signed for Llanelli Scarlets
5 Jul 2012, 14:24 pm
@gecko(gecko)-26: big blow for the lions.
5 Jul 2012, 14:28 pm
@Transformation(Transformation)-4:
Ryan has done almost the same thing with the Highlanders/Jimmy Cowan Thread.
Ryan says Jimmy is starting!!!!
But Team anouncement has Jimmy on the bench.
Perhaps Keo is not the only one leading the “high” life.
5 Jul 2012, 14:28 pm
@Sasuke(Sasuke)-24: They should. And if the Cheetahs are sown up.
I’m more worried about Bekker holding up and about our backup flyhalf having zero game time.
5 Jul 2012, 14:29 pm
@cane(cane)-28: Well Keo has to look up to something.
5 Jul 2012, 14:30 pm
@cane(cane)-28: Not the brightest bulb in the blown basket, eh.
5 Jul 2012, 14:34 pm
@Brigadier Van Zyl(Brigadier Van Zyl)-8:
Poor Cardinelli
5 Jul 2012, 14:34 pm
@gecko(gecko)-26: noooooooooooooooo
5 Jul 2012, 14:44 pm
@bangkok-bok(bangkok-bok)-9: He’s already been at three!
5 Jul 2012, 15:48 pm
@Skeppie(Skeppie)-34: Sharks don’t count, never played a game for us. Ma-pou-whee (as pronounced by the Stransky dictionary) will be stuck in the coketin for a long time after burning most of his bridges.
5 Jul 2012, 15:52 pm
@coma(coma)-35: I suppose so but it’s a pity, he has a lot of potential
5 Jul 2012, 16:50 pm
I would guess Mapoe’s only hope of playing Super Rugby next year is with the Kings.
5 Jul 2012, 16:52 pm
Mind you, the same applies to most of the Lions. Which just underlines how pointless the whole “get rid of the Lions and replace them with the Kings” thing is. We’re just replacing one Kiwi coach with another.
5 Jul 2012, 17:24 pm
Willemse is a bull, Killian is a king, Cilliers is a scarlet. The rest to follow shortly… Deserting p@esklap lions.
6 Jul 2012, 08:56 am
@Slappes(Slappes)-39: Only real loss there is Cilliers.
Have your say
