Murray returns to Lions midfield

Murray returns to Lions midfield

Waylon Murray will start alongside Butch James in the centres when the Lions host the Rebels on Saturday.

Murray’s inclusion at No 13 allows Lionel Mapoe to move back to the wing. James Kamana is reinstated at fullback, while scrumhalf Michael Bondesio is promoted to the starting side.

Interim coach Johan Ackermann has retained the same starting pack that fronted the Stormers last week.

Lions – 15 James Kamana, 14 Lionel Mapoe, 13 Waylon Murray, 12 Butch James, 11 Anthonie Volminck, 10 Elton Jantjies, 9 Michael Bondesio, 8 Joshua Strauss (c), 7 Grant Hattingh, 6 Derick Minnie, 5 Franco van der Merwe, 4 Hendrik Roodt, 3 Jacobie Adriaanse, 2 Callie Visagie, 1 JC Janse van Rensburg
Subs: 16 Martin Bezuidenhout, 17 Ruan Dreyer, 18 Etienne Oosthuizen, 19 Jaco Kriel, 20 Ross Cronje, 21 JR Esterhuizen, 22 Ruan Combrinck

    If my memory isn’t completely frazzled- didn’t this guy start for the Boks at 13 not THAT long ago? What happened to this dragon?

    @bangkok-bok(bangkok-bok)-1: INJURIES.

  • 3.bangkok-bok: Reply to this comment

    What sort of injuries? It’s sad Transie as he used to be a household name- was big- good sidestep and fast. What i find the most shocking is how we have all forgotten about him- as if he’s a ghost of a bygone team- yet it wasn’t that long ago he was a regular in the Boks team.

    Silly me…

    Mapoe looked great at 13 and it being wasted on the wing. Ackers fcking it up already.

    @HHS(Hop Hop Spinnekop)-7: Should Mapoe join another union and if so which one and in what position? Stormers on the wing rather than Gio?

    @ufo(ufo)-10: just a pity one week too late. Good to see Kamana back too, could have, should have punished that mediocre team we fronted last week.

  • 13.bangkok-bok: Reply to this comment

    @ufo(ufo)-11: I rate Gio! In S15 I like him at 15 tho- but not as a Bok 15

    this guy makes Jorrie & Earl look good! k@k op sy beste!

    @RL(RL)-12:

    never really got the kamana thing… don’t see why they bought him or kept him… and that was when he was playing… but seems to be injured more often than not…

    but hope he comes back strong and adds value to the lions gameplan…

    @bangkok-bok(bangkok-bok)-13:

    would not replace him in the stormers for just about anyone… you’d have a major riot on your hands if you did… newlands crowd loves him and you can hear the expectation and excitement build whenever he gets the ball…

    would have him in my current bok team at 15 and lambie at 10…

    @ufo(ufo)-15: I’d personally have Joe at 15 before anyone.

    How could any coach select Bondesio to start at 9, this guy is the worst 9 I have seen in ages. Says alot for Ackerman as coach.

    Why on earth is he not using Baby Bok Paul Willemse at lock?

  • 18.Michael: Reply to this comment

    @stormersboy(stormersboy)-16: Same. I prefer Joe to Gio at FB. Gio on the wing for me.

    Though Hurdles needs some more games to continue his form’s upwards trajectory. Maybe AC needs to do some rotation before the semis.

    yeah… it’s a tough one… i really like and rate them both…
    but going on the current team as selected for the english tour…

    for stormers would keep gio on the wing and joe at 15…

    can’t see heyneke picking both in the same bok team though…

    @Michael(mikeybrass)-18: Hurdles can start in the Currie Cup. Let the team gain momentum and gel together now in time for the semi’s.

    @Sasuke(Sasuke)-21: It’s a balance with making sure that they are not overplayed halfway into a very long season with the risk of getting injured too. Hurdles is good enough to come on and help close out the next match.

    @Michael(mikeybrass)-23: they could rotate against the Rebels.

    yes, he was a bok but to say he was a regular in the team is a bit of an exhaggeration, sir.

    the guy played 3 tests for sa and i’m not even sure he started in all of them.

    anyway, good luck to him going forward.

    Ryan has done almost the same thing with the Highlanders/Jimmy Cowan Thread.

    Ryan says Jimmy is starting!!!!

    But Team anouncement has Jimmy on the bench.

    Perhaps Keo is not the only one leading the “high” life.

    I’m more worried about Bekker holding up and about our backup flyhalf having zero game time.

    I would guess Mapoe’s only hope of playing Super Rugby next year is with the Kings.

  • 38.kaksioek: Reply to this comment

    Mind you, the same applies to most of the Lions. Which just underlines how pointless the whole “get rid of the Lions and replace them with the Kings” thing is. We’re just replacing one Kiwi coach with another.
