Brumbies win Sydney snoozefest
7 Jul 2012
SIMON BORCHARDT saw Jake White’s side take another step towards the Australian conference title with a 19-15 victory against the Waratahs.
The Brumbies, who will play the Blues in their final league fixture in Canberra next weekend, are now five log points clear of the Reds, who will host the Waratahs. However, whoever wins the Australian conference will have to up their game substantially to avoid being knocked out of the competition by the team that finishes sixth on the combined standings (probably the Bulls or Sharks).
The Brumbies were well below their best at Sydney’s Olympic Stadium but fortunately for them they were up against a team that has made a habit of losing games they should have won. The Waratahs dominated the breakdown in the second half and had most of the ball, but were unable to kick on from Berrick Barnes’ try that gave them a 15-9 lead with 20 minutes to go.
The Brumbies hit back shortly after with a Henry Speight try, which was followed by touchline conversion and penalty kicks by Zack Holmes and Jesses Moggs respectively.
The less said about the first half, the better. Tatafu Polota-Nau barged over for a try on the half-hour mark after Barnes had taken a quick penalty tap, but three penalties saw the Brumbies lead 9-5 at the break.
The second half was a bit more entertaining, with two tries scored, but this was yet another Australian derby that will quickly be forgotten.

Brumbies should take this. Sloppy game, though.
So far my weekend is going well from a Superbru perspective, just hope the Lions don’t disappoint me tonight.

“Typical Aussie arm wrestle” = good argument for televising paint drying instead.
7 Jul 2012, 12:05 pm
Say what you want about Oz derbies, but at least skill and use of the brain define these matches. As for our local epics, on the other hand… Absorbing but bloody hell, the skills levels leave a lot to be desired…

@kaksioek(kaksioek)-14:
they’re the super and tri nations champs they must be something right but let me guess you don’t rate Australian rugby despite them having the wood on you in recent years
7 Jul 2012, 12:21 pm
“doing”
7 Jul 2012, 12:22 pm
I like the way they skillfully play between the two 22m lines for most of the match.
7 Jul 2012, 12:23 pm
@NZINCHINA(NZINCHINA)-16: So are you enjoying the game?
7 Jul 2012, 12:24 pm
NZINCHINA, you really do hate Saffas, don’t you?
7 Jul 2012, 12:28 pm
@WP Till I Die(WP-Forever)-20: No, I don’t believe he does, he just likes to speak facts.
7 Jul 2012, 12:30 pm
@WP Till I Die(WP-Forever)-20:
no I love you guys but Australain rugby currently sits above SA rugby, they have the trophies you don’t there is absolutely no respect for them in SA, don’t you find that strange after recent results?
7 Jul 2012, 12:30 pm
Sorry: “state facts”.
7 Jul 2012, 12:35 pm
This game is dire: fact.
7 Jul 2012, 12:36 pm
@NZINCHINA(NZINCHINA)-16: Must be honest with you, I thought the same this morning when Naas Botha was saying on Supersport how Australian rugby is not in a good place at the moment….
They were talking player numbers and depth etc etc etc. Players leaving for Japan and Europe etc. Injuries to key Aussie players etc.
He forgot to mention how the Aussies have always punched above their playing numbers, and how when it matters they do just fine…….
No, they are not NZ and SA in terms of player numbers, but if that was all that mattered, Australia should be ranked 12th in the world….
I don’t like ‘em, but I sure as sh y te respect them, BECAUSE despite the constant battle for ‘survival’ they kick our butts pretty regularly.
7 Jul 2012, 12:39 pm
Fair enough.
I for one love the traditional Springbok-All Blacks rivalry. I would love bringing back tours.
7 Jul 2012, 12:41 pm
@The Sharks rugby pedigree is packaged by Mad Eye Productions.(The Sharks rugby pedigree is packaged as dog food)-25:
exactly if Naas says it 98.8% of SA will think its true, they will be right up there again come the 4 Nations and could have two teams in the playoffs for the super comp, I’m not sure why they are always written off in SA!!
7 Jul 2012, 12:43 pm
@WP Till I Die(WP-Forever)-26:
sure me too mate, its the pinnacle for us as well but the Aussies have given us plenty of beatings at crucial times so in NZ they are never written off
7 Jul 2012, 12:44 pm
Look, when it comes to sport, nobody can match the Australians.
Bloody brilliant in most they play, they punch well above their weight based on population.
If only SA had the development structures Aus have in place, never mind the professionalism of their administrators.
I believe South Africans and Australians are more similar than we like to admit.
7 Jul 2012, 12:46 pm
Prefer that the Brumbies win this
7 Jul 2012, 12:47 pm
@WP Till I Die(WP-Forever)-29:
WTF
you must be having a laugh
7 Jul 2012, 12:48 pm
@chch(chch)-30: So would the ref, apparently.
7 Jul 2012, 12:53 pm
Not at all, chch. Just look at how well the Australians do at the Olympics.
7 Jul 2012, 12:53 pm
@WP Till I Die(WP-Forever)-29:
Can you attempt to justify the statement “Look, when it comes to sport, nobody can match the Australians.” ?
I am just asking as it is friggen ridiculous.
7 Jul 2012, 12:55 pm
C’mon Brumbies.
7 Jul 2012, 13:02 pm
@WP Till I Die(WP-Forever)-33:
Australians purchased tickets to the Olympics because it was the big fun event at the time. People got motivated and all sorts of odd things happened like trains running on time. Australia were the spotlight and it was all exciting for them and people had fun.
I know many Australians and I know many Australians who were at the Olympics and it was just a huge fun event for them. To try and attribute all that to some sort of sporting superior culture is just wring (and I know many Australians who would back up that statement).
If there is one thing that was a big first impression when I moved to Australia it was that the idea that it was some sort of sporting nation was just how the country is promoted and it’s really a bit of a farce.
I took 5 life long Waratahs fans (who lived in Sydney) to their first game. I could name 500 things like that. Even trying to watch sport is a joke. It’s even next to impossible to find sports bar’s that you can watch sport at.
7 Jul 2012, 13:13 pm
@WP Till I Die(WP-Forever)-29: Jake White in the new SA rugby magazine chats about this. Bloody good article. Certain things the Aussies do differently…
7 Jul 2012, 13:16 pm
That was thrilling. I take it all back.
7 Jul 2012, 13:20 pm
@WP Till I Die(WP-Forever)-29: many nations are better than australia at sport dont go over the top now. australias win record over the past decade isnt great at all 54% under deans and 52% under jones and not much better before or after those two. they are good at cricket and league and have their moments in olympic events but not anything like you try to say. they only got a bit over us in rugby because of peter but they never had any edge over us before that at all.
7 Jul 2012, 13:22 pm
Simon got the headline right.
7 Jul 2012, 13:24 pm
@WP Till I Die(WP-Forever)-33:
If you are referring to medals then the Australians do well because of the swimming. In summing you can move your arm slightly differently or roll over and just go it a bit further and it is counted as another event and another bunch of medals. With some 100 medals available from the pool as a swimming nation you expect to do well in the medal count at the Olympics.
The way the media follow and report on the distorted view of achievement is vial. Media reporting that their country is better as they have twice the medals as country X. Yeah that is what the Olympics are meant to be about, how good you are at event with an extreme number of variations. People pretending to take an interest in all sorts of stuff that they never gave a **** about before. It’s a farce.
Part of the reason Aus do so well in the pool and the Olympics in general is because the Australian Sports Institute is very very good. The government put a lot of money into it.
There are many nations out their where people are more sporting orientated (or just as sporting orientated). Many people are achieving great things without ever having that level of financial backing too. Australia is not a bad sporting nation but it does promote itself as a very sporting nation with a sporting culture and if you go and live their you will realise that is just promotional bollocks
7 Jul 2012, 13:28 pm
Sorry about the spelling above
7 Jul 2012, 13:29 pm
@chch(chch)-41: Exactly!
7 Jul 2012, 13:30 pm
I make a point never to watch Aussie derbys – fcking booring as hell and this match lived up to the snorre-o-metre, based on the snoozefest comment.
That’s right Oneil I will not give you my tv ratings. Not a chance.
7 Jul 2012, 13:31 pm
So, the SA rugby supporters who were so much against the conference system because it seemed to be more advantages towards the Aussie teams, what are they saying now?
Brumbies now have more log points than the Bulls and the Sharks. The Reds are only one point behind this two teams.
In fact, it now looks as if the conference system is going to help the Bulls and the Sharks to at least reach the play off round. Something that would not have happened if we went straight to semi finals and then a final.
The irony, neh!!!
7 Jul 2012, 13:36 pm
@nama1(nama1)-45: what are you talking about man – look at the log. 3 SA teams in the playoffs, 2 Kiwi teams and 1 convitc team. That sums up the strenght of the conferences.
Brumbies are kak and will be moered by either the guppies or the bullies in the playoffs.
7 Jul 2012, 13:38 pm
@nama1(nama1)-45: yes it worked out in the end, so far but you are not understanding anything at all. you cannot set up a tournament where a team with less points has any kind of chance of being top! if you think you can justify this then i feel sorry for you.
7 Jul 2012, 13:40 pm
@RL(RL)-46: the guppies got lucky last time and the bulls too i dont know whose socks you been smocking pal.
7 Jul 2012, 13:51 pm
@Blitzbok(Blitzbok)-48: where is the lucky column on the scoreboard?
7 Jul 2012, 13:56 pm
@RL(RL)-49: it matters alot you said those two will kill the brumbies when in fact both were outplayed by them. keep dreaming if think the bruumbies will roll over. and stop lieing to yourself that either one played any good against them this season.
