There was much spoken about the Blue Bulls, WP and SWD heading into this year’s tournament, but KZN made a strong statement as they ripped into 2011 unofficial champions Free State.

The schoolboys from Durban ran in seven tries in a convincing attacking display. Fullback Jesse Kriel was the star with ball in hand as the chief playmaker, with clever passes and breaching the opposition’s defensive line regularly. He was later named Man of the Match. His influence, along with great interplay among backs and forwards, saw the Sharks surge into a 36-3 half-time lead.

Wing Bruce Arnott grabbed a brace as he showed good finishing skills to sneak into the corner on two occasions. Locks Daniel du Preez and Justin Moberly, and Kriel also crashed over. Flyhalf Rob Anderson completed the first-half rout by slotting four conversions and a penalty.

Free State struggled to build continuity on attack and were poor on defence. They only managed a penalty through skipper Pieter Jordaan.

KZN weren’t as convincing in the second half as they only managed two more tries through wing Corne Vermaak and Kriel. This allowed Free State to score three consolation tries via No 8 Edward Schmidt, prop Othello Sebotsha and fullback EW Viljoen.

Nevertheless, it was evident in this match that KZN could be the team to beat for the 2012 unofficial champion crown.

    Game ended 48 – 24 Gareth.
Cheetahs scored 2 tries in the last 4 minutes.

Quite a surprising result. Thats quite a thrashing for a FS schools side.

Robert Du Preez twin kids from Natal are freaks. Still only in Standard 9. (not sure what Grade that is)

Impressed! When last if ever has a Natal craven week side done this?

  • 3.Sharksgirl: Reply to this comment

@John Galt(John Galt)-1: its grade 11 :) and if they went to PMB College it would be even more confusing as they follow the British sytem and they would be in form 5 :) I had just got used to grades, now my son is at College and I am having to work out the forms  :)

Its a pity Daniel Kriel is injured! The twins together are really brilliant!

How long until skoppie starts telling us that these young sharkievarkies were stolen from their Bloemfontein-dwelling mothers at birth?

@Skeppie(Skeppie)-10: Sad to say. The Bulls have already bought the top 3 schoolboy flyhalves in the country for starters.
They are stockpiling, and they don’t care if these kids actually get any game time up north or not.
What they do care about is making sure, none of the other unions get the top youngsters. So they buy them all. It’s a game of monopoly for Fatty van Graan and his Illuminati. The buy hotels cos they have the money and it’s fun denying anyone else the opportunity.

@The Sharks rugby pedigree is packaged by Mad Eye Productions.(The Sharks rugby pedigree is packaged as dog food)-17: I have said this for a while now, it seems the aim is to of course strengthen themselves, and at the same time weaken the others, now we all buy players, it is a professional era, but if done the wrong way can also harm SA rugby, i know the Sharks backed off Pollard for a reason, besides what they have at the acdemy? last year young Robert Dupreez JNR came through better than expected, big flyhalf big boot also plays 12

big defender too.so giving the local boy a chance
i know at center they have 4 very good locals comming through, like kyle fisher outside center sa schools last year

but yeah i know we dont always agree, but on this i do, buying must not just be for the sake of buying

  • 20.sharks_lover: Reply to this comment

look just for those that might think i am complaining that one of the natal stars is maybe off to another province??? it really is not the case, i have always stated its a professional era , live with it, but there also should be a some sensibillity, thing it is also hard to know what positions they are having a shortage of depth at? as we dont really know their whole squad etc

    so maybe its vindicated

@sharks_lover(sharks_lover)-20: come on sharky, you okes have been feasting on border, ep & free state boys for eons and now that the bulls have relieved some dosh in vic, bakkies, guthro, fdp, danie & gary botha salaries and they can buy every talented boy in SA you are crying but claiming you are not crying…

vreet some of your own medicine boetie :D

@sharks_lover(sharks_lover)-20: Do they need three 18 year old flyhalves?

SARU at some stage have to step in with regard to the wellbeing of all players under the age of 21. The most talented kids in the country NEED to be playing – week in, and week out. I don’t care if they are playing for SWD, the Valke, The Griffons or the Lions – they just have to be playing.
With the way the Bulls are buying, 85% of SA’s rugby future will be sitting on a bench in Pta or polishing Oom Pierre’s boots…..

the spending spree the bulls are on is a tacit admission by them that their development programme is a failure…

so if it is true that WP schoolboys need to play for the Bulls to ‘earn’ Boks selection…

where does that leave Pretoria schoolboys…??

Guess they have to go to school in Cape Town…?

@ufo(ufo)-25: apparently it is the ANC’s fault that the rest of the country is ungovernable & the volk have moved to Zilleberg which is why “all the talented afrikaans seuns” are at WP schools.

Robert Du Preez’s twins were absolutely brilliant, Jesse Kriel?? all i can say is WOW, and if he indeed goes to the BUlls?? good luck to him, great buy then by the BUlls, and very poor from the Sharks management. time will tell

It was Grey Collage vs Glenwood,Maritzburg,MichaelHouse,Kearsney
    & Westville.

Free State have been depending on Grey since
the inception of CW and this year Grey lacks
depth and FS is suffering cause of that

Saw one of Blue Bulls signings Jaco Van Der Walt(Lions Flyhalf) won MOTM really would waste his talent and time considering his gonna fall behind about 10 other FH’s

  • 39.CharlesM: Reply to this comment

Although the KZN played really well, there has to be something wrong with this year’s crop of Free State schoolboys. Their Academy side was thrashed by Western Province last Tuesday 51 – 8 and they were lucky to sneak a last minute win over SWD 27 – 24 !!

  • 40.CharlesM: Reply to this comment

@storiejoernal(storiejoernal)-38: The other flyhalf going to the Bulls, Stander (I don’t know his first name) of Queen’s College was not picked by the Border selectors because he is leaving the Border region next season – what a pity because he is apparently quite a brilliant flyhalf.

  • 41.storiejoernal: Reply to this comment

    @CharlesM

    Top schoolboys,it’s a real pity
    two young players of Stander
    and Smith’s ability are being
    deprived of the opportunity to
    play at Craven Week
Joshua Stander & JP Stander both from Queens they have signed for…wait for it…Bulls

And its Lions Vs KZN on Wednesday

@storiejoernal(storiejoernal)-38: That’s the Monument kid. A bloody shame this – 3 classy and talented 10′s carrying tackle bags. Tragic.

@CharlesM(CharlesM)-40: Grey have been poor this season, losing to schools like Affies and the like who they usually whip :) It shows clearly in their Academy week and 1st Craven week match results.
I guess even the great Grey has a bad/weak year in terms of a crop of players.

Good news for the rest of us of course.

  • 43.fitz1ella: Reply to this comment

How many bloody schoolboy fly halves do Bulls actually need or want?

What about poor Visser and Fouche and Jantjies jnr. who are already carrying tackle bags behind M. Steyn playing solely at VC level

next its going to be Pollard, then this Stander kid from PE and the Lions No.10 Vd Walt and who else?

  • 44.Transformation: Reply to this comment

@fitz1ella(fitz1ella)-43: bulls are gonna brainwash all these boys & churn out msteyn 3.0, 4.0 etc

they took brummer & after he’d been through the ringer he couldn’t control a game to save his life.

  • 45.Transformation: Reply to this comment

then they dumped him @ the griquas along with marnitz boshoff.

  • 46.Gambit25: Reply to this comment

    @Transformation(Transformation)-45: and Francois Brummer…

SARU needs to do something about all this pull the Bulls are having on the school boys. Are they being offered women and R8′s as well?

You got to credit the Bulls scouts for their talent spotting but they are seriously not helping these kids development and senior aspirations by signing them all. LET THE BOYS PLAY, NOT ALL OF THEM WILL HAVE THAT OPPORTUNITY IN PTA!

@Gambit25(Gambit25)-46: ag man, they deserve no credit, they go to the games and flash their credit card that’s all…these are the same scouts that got dustin jinka, courtnall skosan, gerrit-jan van velze, ruan snyman, orkie kruger, deon helberg, henry batjies, stefan dippenaar, frederick kirsten, zane botha etc…they just doing “hit or miss”

signing a boy like jan serfontein is a no-brainer, there’s a reason why grey college poached him from grey high in grade 9/10, same with pollard who is captain of wp craven week.

how come they’re not spotting jackshit up at waterkloof or in limpopo etc?
