Reds retain Aussie crown
14 Jul 2012
SIMON BORCHARDT saw the Reds beat the Waratahs 32-16 in Brisbane to finish top of the Australian conference.
After the Brumbies’ defeat to the Blues, the Reds had to win their final league fixture and score four tries to finish third on the combined log. They achieved their goal, although three of their five tries were a result of mistakes from the Waratahs, who have lost their last eight matches.
The Super Rugby champions will now host a play-off qualifier in Brisbane next weekend against the team that finishes sixth on the combined log, while the Brumbies need the Bulls or Sharks to slip up on Saturday if they are to reach the play-offs.
The Reds made the ideal start to this crucial fixture when a botched lineout saw Will Genia send the ball wide to Scott Higginbotham, who got on the outside of Tatafu Polota-Nau to score in the corner.
However, it was the visitors who dominated possession and territory for the remainder of the first quarter. Berrick Barnes kicked a penalty and Chris Alcock was desperately unlucky not to score a try after charging down Genia’s kick (Dom Shipperley got a boot to the ball just before the Waratahs flanker could apply downward pressure).
Liam Gill scored the Reds second try moments after Tahs prop Paddy Ryan had been sent to the sin bin for a professional foul, but the visitors hit back through Drew Mitchell, who chased down Bernard Foley’s kick into the in-goal area.
While Foley missed the conversion, Adam Ashley-Cooper kicked a long-range drop goal to make it 12-11 at half-time.
But the Tahs imploded again early in the second half when Polota-Nau’s wayward lineout throw was poached by James Slipper, who scored his side’s third try. Five minutes later, Mitchell knocked on inside his 22 after a poor pass from Barnes and Shipperley picked up the loose ball to score the bonus-point try.
Genia extended the Reds’ lead to 18 with a try in the corner, before they were reduced to 14 men when Quade Cooper was yellow carded for a dangerous tackle on Barnes.
Tom Carter then scored a consolation try for the Waratahs with seven minutes to go, but Harris sealed the win with a late penalty.

@nama1(nama1)-45: spot on Nama. That is increasingly looking like the option. The Reds have two tries already and are looking fired up.
The crowd in Brisbane is amazing. I wish the Kings Park faithful could make as much noise as them.

Try time Reds!!

@munkiboi(munkiboi)-33:
Wooden spoon stated it was a Sa initiative on Blues thread…first three places reserved for Conference winners. Sa were hoodwinked by that little fella John O’neil again…..master manipulator.
14 Jul 2012, 12:09 pm
@Wezwp(Wezwp)-37: Why? Can you confirm that it is no longer points difference?
14 Jul 2012, 12:09 pm
@Te Rangatira(Te Rangatira)-53: it is true as far as I know. I have something in the back of my mind telling me it was a SA demand.
14 Jul 2012, 12:11 pm
Ill bet my house on it that they take first take wins into consideration before points difference.
14 Jul 2012, 12:11 pm
Try Tahs
14 Jul 2012, 12:11 pm
Try Tahs.
14 Jul 2012, 12:12 pm
@Wezwp(Wezwp)-56: yes Wez they do. But the Brumbies have 10 wins.
If the Reds win here with a bonus it is Brumbies vs Sharks for 6th place…….
Brumbies have 10 wins……..
Sharks have 9 but a win against the cheetahs gives them 10……….
So points difference becomes key…………
Get it now?…………
14 Jul 2012, 12:13 pm
@Wezwp(Wezwp)-56:
You are correct – overall points first, then most number of wins, then points difference,
14 Jul 2012, 12:13 pm
@Wezwp(Wezwp)-56:
“Two teams on the same points.
If two or more teams are equal on points in any position on either the Conference or Overall Super Rugby standings at any time during the regular season their ranking will be determined by the following steps:
Six teams will qualify for the Super Rugby Finals at the end of the regular season, as follows:
• Most wins from all matches
• Highest aggregate points difference from all matches
• Most tries from all matches
• Highest aggregate difference in tries for and against from all matches
• Coin toss (this will only be used to determine Finalists)
The following teams will advance to the finals:
· The three respective Conference winners, ranked according to the highest number of competition points.
· Three wildcard teams who have the next highest number of competition points irrespective of the Conference in which they play.
· The teams occupying the top two places in the overall standings will have a bye into the semi-finals with the other four teams playing-off for the remaining two semi-final places.”

If the Reds win here with a bonus it doesn’t matter how many wins they have – they top the Aus conference and are guaranteed 3rd place regardless of their points tally……….
14 Jul 2012, 12:15 pm
oh ****, it looks like NZ was in favour of conferences
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Rugby#Expansion_to_15_teams
Damn the NZRU are a bunch of old stupid twats
14 Jul 2012, 12:15 pm
@wooden spoon(wooden spoon)-59:
Sharks just need to win by 5points against the cheetahs to qualify…
14 Jul 2012, 12:17 pm
@Oxy moron(cjgrove)-64: yes I have said that countless times already but thanks for confirming it.
14 Jul 2012, 12:17 pm
Was that drop over….
14 Jul 2012, 12:18 pm
@chch(chch)-63:
hehe…….that little fella, John O’Neil, master manipulator hoodwinks Nz again
14 Jul 2012, 12:19 pm
@chch(chch)-63:
Hey Brochch,
I don’t think any of our countries are doing well with our Rugby Unions…
All of them are incredibly stupid.
PS: The real top 4 should be
Chiefs/Stormers
Crusaders/Bulls/Sharks
14 Jul 2012, 12:19 pm
Reds concentrating so much on scoring the four tries that they forget they have to win first.
Tahs only one point adrift despite the Reds having scored two tries already.
14 Jul 2012, 12:20 pm
@wooden spoon(wooden spoon)-65: Just feels good to say. Its a lot easier than winning with a bonus! Thanks Blues.
14 Jul 2012, 12:21 pm
@Oxy moron(cjgrove)-70: haha, ok I get you now.
14 Jul 2012, 12:23 pm
@Oxy moron(cjgrove)-70: but actually I think the Brumbies would be an easier game so I’m hoping for the Waratahs to win. That way it doesn’t matter if the Reds score 10 tries today.
14 Jul 2012, 12:23 pm
Lemoenetyd.
14 Jul 2012, 12:25 pm
I think most teams would rather want to play the Brumbies than the Reds…
14 Jul 2012, 12:26 pm
@wooden spoon(wooden spoon)-72: Yup,
BRUMBIES V SHARKS
CRUSADERS V BULLS
Ideal Scenario.
14 Jul 2012, 12:27 pm
Ok finally get it guys. Thanks for the info. Now I remember why I signed up for keo 5 years ago.
14 Jul 2012, 12:27 pm
What is the Brumbies points difference compared to the sharks?
14 Jul 2012, 12:29 pm
@Wezwp(Wezwp)-77: at the moment it’s +4 to the Brumbies. Thats why the Sharks would need to beat the Cheetahs by 5+.
14 Jul 2012, 12:30 pm
Come on Reds!Get back to basics first and the tries will come.
14 Jul 2012, 12:30 pm
@Oxy moron(cjgrove)-75:
I would really like to play the Bulls. It is a farce that we have not played them yet this super comp
14 Jul 2012, 12:31 pm
But if the Reds lose this game all the Sharks and Bulls would have to do is win their respective games.
14 Jul 2012, 12:31 pm
@wooden spoon(wooden spoon)-72:
The Bulls currently are in 5th because they have a better points differential than you guys. Remember that they are going to play last and will know exactly what to do to end up in 6th position.
They probably also fancy their chances against the Brumbies should the Reds lose here.
Your boys should not beat the Cheetahs by too big a margin.
14 Jul 2012, 12:31 pm
@chch(chch)-80: yes you have. You haven’t played the Sharks.
14 Jul 2012, 12:32 pm
@chch(chch)-80:
I think you will get your wish…
14 Jul 2012, 12:32 pm
@Wezwp(Wezwp)-77:
Brumbies +73
Sharks +69
14 Jul 2012, 12:33 pm
@nama1(nama1)-82: those Bulls would stoop to any level….
14 Jul 2012, 12:33 pm
@wooden spoon(wooden spoon)-83:
oh ****, really …. bring on the Sharks then
14 Jul 2012, 12:35 pm
@nama1(nama1)-82: yes, Sharks wouldn’t want to win by more than 16 points.
Let’s just win first then worry about bonuses and PD!
14 Jul 2012, 12:35 pm
all that crowd noise is from the gabba, where thre bris lions have just got in front of st kilda
14 Jul 2012, 12:36 pm
wow, crazy not to take the kick. As long as the tahs are close they will play a tight game which won’t help 4 tries or the win
14 Jul 2012, 12:36 pm
Did anybody see the Reds players are wearing bra’s
14 Jul 2012, 12:36 pm
The Cheetahs and Lions would LOVE to throw a big spanner in the works.
I hope the “Bulls” and “Stormers” conquering Sharks rock up today, not the “Lions” Sharks
14 Jul 2012, 12:37 pm
3rd try reds…
14 Jul 2012, 12:37 pm

14 Jul 2012, 12:37 pm
Try number 3……
14 Jul 2012, 12:37 pm
Try no. 3 for the Reds.
It’s on.
Jake White chewing his fingers off now.
14 Jul 2012, 12:37 pm
@chch(chch)-94: lol
14 Jul 2012, 12:38 pm

14 Jul 2012, 12:38 pm

14 Jul 2012, 12:38 pm
