Reds retain Aussie crown
14 Jul 2012
SIMON BORCHARDT saw the Reds beat the Waratahs 32-16 in Brisbane to finish top of the Australian conference.
After the Brumbies’ defeat to the Blues, the Reds had to win their final league fixture and score four tries to finish third on the combined log. They achieved their goal, although three of their five tries were a result of mistakes from the Waratahs, who have lost their last eight matches.
The Super Rugby champions will now host a play-off qualifier in Brisbane next weekend against the team that finishes sixth on the combined log, while the Brumbies need the Bulls or Sharks to slip up on Saturday if they are to reach the play-offs.
The Reds made the ideal start to this crucial fixture when a botched lineout saw Will Genia send the ball wide to Scott Higginbotham, who got on the outside of Tatafu Polota-Nau to score in the corner.
However, it was the visitors who dominated possession and territory for the remainder of the first quarter. Berrick Barnes kicked a penalty and Chris Alcock was desperately unlucky not to score a try after charging down Genia’s kick (Dom Shipperley got a boot to the ball just before the Waratahs flanker could apply downward pressure).
Liam Gill scored the Reds second try moments after Tahs prop Paddy Ryan had been sent to the sin bin for a professional foul, but the visitors hit back through Drew Mitchell, who chased down Bernard Foley’s kick into the in-goal area.
While Foley missed the conversion, Adam Ashley-Cooper kicked a long-range drop goal to make it 12-11 at half-time.
But the Tahs imploded again early in the second half when Polota-Nau’s wayward lineout throw was poached by James Slipper, who scored his side’s third try. Five minutes later, Mitchell knocked on inside his 22 after a poor pass from Barnes and Shipperley picked up the loose ball to score the bonus-point try.
Genia extended the Reds’ lead to 18 with a try in the corner, before they were reduced to 14 men when Quade Cooper was yellow carded for a dangerous tackle on Barnes.
Tom Carter then scored a consolation try for the Waratahs with seven minutes to go, but Harris sealed the win with a late penalty.

@Fern is not a stud,he is merely no19(Fern)-101:
Forget about the result of this game.
Just win your game with a bonus point and you’ll be in the play offs.

14 Jul 2012, 12:45 pm
Brumbies really cocked it up for themselves at the end, didn’t they?
14 Jul 2012, 12:45 pm

14 Jul 2012, 12:46 pm

@Fern is not a stud,he is merely no19(Fern)-122:

14 Jul 2012, 12:47 pm
@Fern is not a stud,he is merely no19(Fern)-101:
Fernly getting tougher for you guys, or should it be, tougher for any teams meeting last years finalists at home.
14 Jul 2012, 12:47 pm
Oh yesssssss!!!!off to Brisbane you go you sharkievarkie eejits
14 Jul 2012, 12:48 pm
@Fern is not a stud,he is merely no19(Fern)-122: no, the Sharks don’t need a bonus point against the Cheetahs, they just need to win by 5 points or more.
14 Jul 2012, 12:48 pm
Question now is this. Will the Reds keep on playing rugby or will they try and defend their lead?
Still about 28 minutes to go and they only lead by 13. They can still lose the game if they stop playing now.
14 Jul 2012, 12:49 pm
This will be the Reds’ 6th win on the trot.
14 Jul 2012, 12:50 pm
@Fern is not a stud,he is merely no19(Fern)-122: Jis Fern.
Die Sharks moet nou veg vir die 6de plek om bo die Brumbies te eindig, aangesien Jake se spul onverwags teen die Blues vasgeval het vanoggend.
Julle moet wen met 4 drieë, en met 5 punte of meer.
14 Jul 2012, 12:50 pm
@wooden spoon(wooden spoon)-102: it takes one to know one
bonus point secured… tl tl tl
14 Jul 2012, 12:51 pm
@stormerforlife1(stormerforlife1)-125:
Either that or it is the Crusaders in NZ.
Wonder who they would prefer now.
14 Jul 2012, 12:51 pm
Drew Mitchell; hero to villain
14 Jul 2012, 12:51 pm
@willievz(willievz)-129:
Die Cheetahs mag dalk ‘n struikelblok wees, veral teen hulle “ou vyand”.
14 Jul 2012, 12:51 pm
Bulls and Sharks will still only need the win…
But the Sharks need to win by 5 or more.
14 Jul 2012, 12:51 pm
@wooden spoon(wooden spoon)-126: @willievz(willievz)-129: Apologies,
Wooden spoon is right.
You don’t need the bonuspoint if you beat the Cheetahs, but you need to win by 5 or more.
14 Jul 2012, 12:52 pm
willie ek voel stil stil vol vertroue dat ons dit kan doen.
14 Jul 2012, 12:52 pm
@WP Till I Die(WP-Forever)-133: Baie moontlik.
14 Jul 2012, 12:53 pm
@willievz(willievz)-129: Nee Willie.
If the Sharks win with a 4 try bonus, they don’t also need a better PD than the Brumbies.
A 4 try bonus win will do it outright. But this opens the prospect of the Bulls finishing in 6th if they beat the Lions WITHOUT a bonus point.
If no 4 try bonus point all the Sharks need to do is ensure they beat the Cheetahs by at least 5 points.
14 Jul 2012, 12:53 pm
the DYNAMITE will dispense of the cheetahs with a full compliment of tries.
14 Jul 2012, 12:54 pm
cooper the SHOWMAN!!!!
14 Jul 2012, 12:54 pm

14 Jul 2012, 12:54 pm
That man Quade Cooper!!
14 Jul 2012, 12:54 pm
Try number 5
14 Jul 2012, 12:55 pm
stop worrying like old woman, Bulls and Sharks won’t make the semi’s so relax
14 Jul 2012, 12:55 pm
@Transformation(Transformation)-139: cnut.
14 Jul 2012, 12:55 pm
@Fern is not a stud,he is merely no19(Fern)-136: Ek hoop so ou maat.
14 Jul 2012, 12:55 pm
Going to be fun to watch the Sharks and Bulls trying not to score a bonus point… Hehehe
14 Jul 2012, 12:56 pm
@wooden spoon(wooden spoon)-138: See 135.
14 Jul 2012, 12:56 pm
Any boffin give us a heads up on the permutations as it stands now re: Bulls & Sharks please?
14 Jul 2012, 12:56 pm
This is the most tries the Reds have EVER scored against the Waratahs….
Hmmm…..
If this were cricket……………
