Cooper’s absence gives Sharks a gap

Cooper’s absence gives Sharks a gap

JON CARDINELLI writes the Reds will miss Quade Cooper’s attacking influence as well as his kicking game when they host the Sharks this Saturday.

Cooper has been suspended for one match following a dangerous tackle on Berrick Barnes, and not for the first time this season Ewen McKenzie will ask a utility player to fill the Reds’ flyhalf void.

A serious knee injury sustained at the 2011 World Cup sidelined Cooper for most of this year’s Super Rugby competition. As a result, the Reds haven’t been as much of a threat on attack, and haven’t been as effective at implementing their kicking game via that imposing Wallabies halfback pairing.

The Reds have looked a better side since Cooper’s return, and scored a bonus-point win over the Waratahs last Saturday to claim the Australian conference title. However, it is Cooper’s transgression and subsequent suspension that could prevent the Reds from advancing any further in this tournament, as they don’t have another player in the same class.

Former Wallabies centre Tim Horan said as much following Cooper’s dangerous tackle. Predictably, McKenzie has responded by pointing to the Reds’ earlier performances when Cooper was still on the sideline. McKenzie cited wins that were achieved without Cooper, and believes that the Reds will cope with the most recent setback and progress to the semi-finals.

McKenzie has also said that the Reds ‘owe the Sharks one’, referring to the Sharks’ win against the Reds in the league phase. It was in this match where the Reds’ flyhalf problem quickly became a nightmare, as further injuries to flyhalves resulted in Will Genia finishing the game at pivot.

Genia will miss having Cooper on his inside this Saturday. The Wallabies halfback pair was integral to the Reds’ success in the 2011 Super Rugby competition as well as the Wallabies’ Tri-Nations victory. Both are outstanding individual players, but that halfback combination is more than the sum of its parts.

Every opponent of the Reds has been on a ‘Get Genia’ campaign this season, and attempts to disrupt the Reds at source is no new tactic. The Sharks will surely aim to bully the Reds up front and deny Genia a platform from which to play, but they should also work to further negate his space.

The fact that Cooper is not on Genia’s outside means there should be more pressure on the scrumhalf to play the role of general, as well as provide the attacking impetus. It’s a lot of responsibility, and the Sharks would do well to use this pressure to their advantage.

The Sharks will be without three key players of their own, as Pat Lambie (ankle injury), Pieter-Steph du Toit (ankle injury) and Frans Steyn (ineligible) will not be available.

However, it is more significant that their heavy hitting Springboks should be back in the starting line-up. The inclusion of Willem Alberts and Bismarck du Plessis will aid the Sharks’ quest for gainline supremacy, as well as the aim to stifle Genia’s influence.

Steyn has made a massive impact since joining the Sharks, and the Durban-side will miss his physical influence as well as his prodigious boot. Coach John Plumtree has the option of moving Tim Whitehead to No 12 and bringing Paul Jordaan in at No 13, but a like-for-like replacement would be more prudent. Meyer Bosman is an imposing physical specimen and has the type of kicking game that is so often the difference in tight play-off matches.

It’s a big ask to travel across the world and win a play-off, and I’m not suggesting that the Sharks will have it easy in Brisbane. But there’s little doubt that the absence of Cooper will effect the Reds’ balance and increase the chances of a Sharks upset.

Would think Harris at 10 and Ben Tapuai back in the centres, hard to replace the burgaring DRAGON because of his uniqueness but not the end of the world for them.

Suncorp is a hard place to beat the Reds and the Sharks will have to play well…

    In other news…

Former All Black John Kirwan is the new head coach of the Blues, with incumbent Pat Lam being shown the door after four years in charge.

Kirwan returns to coach in New Zealand after stints with Japan (2007-2011) and Italy (2002-2005) and will take over the Blues in August. He has signed a two-year contract for the 2013 and 2014 Super Rugby seasons.

“This is an exciting time. I am honoured to be given the opportunity to lead the Blues next season in what I hope will be a new era of success and innovation,” Kirwan said.

“I’m also thrilled about coming back to New Zealand and home to Auckland after several years overseas. I am a proud Blues man and I started my rugby career in the region so I am really excited about connecting with fans and working with the Blues community. There is certainly some hard work ahead and I am looking forward to the challenge.”

  • 19.CoachPete: Reply to this comment

Plus with Alberts at lock he is somewhat a loose forward and lock, and having Coetzee and Bismark contesting tackle ball, it allows Daniels and Kanko ( a lesser extent) to chase Genia and disrupt his game totally, because you know he is going to do a lot himself with Cooper out.

This will be the tighter of the two contests IMHO because oddly enough it seems the Bulls aren’t the same team when playing in Chch (beaten 27 – 0 last year) and likewise the Crusaders have recently struggled in Pretoria.

  • 23.Sharks fans are genuine Bok supporters: Reply to this comment

Genia and Cooper were responsible for whipping the Crusaders last year, so this has given The Sharks a significant advantage. The inclusion of Alberts and Bismark is huge! As much as I like Craig Burden he was strangely found wanting against the Cheetahs. The influence of Francois Steyn is vital. He was influencial for the Boks in the RWC and his eventual injury basically saw our hopes go down the crapper…such is his influence. He will be sorely missed against the Reds.

The chiefs match was the first time where they got all their players back but one!

I think it will be close on paper i.e. close before the game but i think the sharks will need to put a big score on in the first 30 min otherwise it is not going to be pretty.

The biggest problem for the Sharks is Turnstile Bosman at centre.. No use Bissy wins every ball at breakdown time for Bossie to screw it up.. Steyn will be a big loss come Saturday.

the other important thing to remember is that the Sharks have struggled away from home. Even against the lions…

  • 34.Provvas: Reply to this comment

As a reminder: The sharks have played all the lower ranked teams away from home: The Tahs, Brumbies, Canes and blues. of which they lost to the Tahs, the Canes and recently the Lions. Same for some of the so called Stormers supporters who do likewise.

It does no one any good to be quite frank.

I am blogging more on sites where the focus is Rugby and not trading insults all day long.

Queensland Reds looking to avenge round-four loss to Sharks in Super Rugby qualifier on Saturday

    By Chris Garry
    The Courier-Mail
    July 16, 20128:04AM

Revenge is on the mind of Queensland Reds this week in their Super Rugby rematch with the Sharks, who inflicted their most frustrating loss this year.
The Reds play the Durban-based Sharks at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday night in an elimination final expected to attract a 50,000-strong crowd.

A 27-22 round-four loss to the Sharks was a game they should have won and probably would have if not for two injuries and a sin-binning.

The Reds were leading 17-0 early in the game and 17-7 when winger Digby Ioane was binned for a lifting tackle as the half-time whistle sounded.

The Sharks fought back in the second half to make it a true contest and when Mike Harris and Ben Lucas both sustained hamstring injuries, Will Genia was left to kick a crucial goal for the Reds which he missed.

Queensland went into a three-game losing streak after that defeat.

Coach Ewen McKenzie said that loss still grated and a team could not be considered true champions unless they beat every team in the competition.

“We want to square the ledger,” McKenzie said. “If you want to win the competition you have to be able to beat everyone. We have not won against some teams in the finals (Sharks, Bulls and Crusaders). We back ourselves against those teams.”

The Sharks sealed sixth place on the Super Rugby ladder with a 34-15 win over the Cheetahs, fighting back from a 15-6 half-time deficit.

Springboks forwards Willem Alberts and Bismarck du Plessis were not in the Sharks’ starting team but with the side struggling, coach John Plumtree sent both on before the break.

It was a transformed Sharks team that came out for the second half and dominated the Cheetahs.

The Sharks have played only South African teams for the past two months and McKenzie said he had already developed a Sharks-specific game plan.

“I already have some thoughts on how to play them. It won’t be the same game plan we used on the weekend,” he said.

“The Sharks have only played South African teams since May 12.

“Hopefully we offer something different. There’s a chance there to take them into a different space.

“We have got three games to win now.”

The Reds have a poor record against the Sharks, winning just one of their past five matches.

Frans Steyn will be a bigger loss for the Sharks that what Cooper would be for the Reds.Turnstile Bosman will cost them big time. The plus for them though is the fact that their other weak point,Lambie,is not playing. The former Lion much better at the back.

    @sharks_lover(sharks_lover)-118:

i haven’t been through the thread post for post bud… when i see the insults fly i ignore the post…

think stormersboy made a good point though… everyone goes back to what someone said before and then goes right ahead insults in turn… so the cycle goes… if people who consider themselves to be trying not to add fuel to the fire simply ignored the posts of the insultors it MAY quieten down.

I really don’t enjoy or look for fights… but it is difficult at times to keep quiet when guys i consider good guys generalizing and insulting me simply because i am a wp supporter and they want to insult other wp supporters…

have said before… if people simply responded by directing their response to the specific blogger who they have a beef with most of this would quieten down… but people insist on generalizing and insulting in broad brushstrokes which get under the skins of even the most mild mannered of us…

the other thing that bloggers do is always add a caveat that is often really unnecessary… like “well done stormers… pity you don’t score bonus points” or “well done sharks… pity the lions whooped you” (these are mild examples so as not to incite further violence…)

i have decided i will be responsible for what i say and only direct responses to individuals… except when congratulating the fans of a team…

thing is sharks lover… we all have to take accountability for the ill-feeling that goes on here and man-up and choose to be part of the solution or the ongoing problem…

it’s just my opinion but if each of us ensures that we don’t add to the hatred by pointing fingers… or returning serve… of digging up ancient history… and keeps our slate clean by not posting insults… we become part of the solution not the ongoing cause… yes it’s difficult at times but simply to succumb to the lowest common denominator seems a strange thing for intelligent decent people to do…

excuse the long post… just my tuppence worth to try and improve the rugby chat and banter…

    The Adjudicator: Super Rugby

Crusaders v Bulls, Rugby League Park, Christchurch, Saturday 5.30pm (EST)

The Adjudicator says: “I don’t know who or what the Crusaders have been sacrificing to the rugby gods. Whatever it is, it’s certainly working. Did you see Israel Dagg’s try on the weekend? I’ve seen more control on a Tour de France descent – tacks and oil spills included. I’m just thankful the decision didn’t influence the end result – or the make-up of the top six places for that matter. With the job already done by half-time, the Crusaders wasted little energy in the second half against the Force. In fact, they must have wanted to see a smile on Nathan “Razor” Sharpe’s face as they let the Force score three tries. Hours later, the Bulls found themselves in a real fight with the Lions when they were locked at 20-all at half-time. But with the game – and a semi-finals spot – on the line, Springboks Francois Hougaard and Jacques Potgieter ensured the three-time champions a second flight across the Indian Ocean this season. Last year, their South African neighbours, the Sharks, endured a miserable semi-final showing against the Crusaders as they were thumped 38-6 in Nelson. The Bulls matched it with the Chiefs in New Zealand earlier in the season but the Crusaders, at knock-out time, represent a greater challenge than Warnie’s VB Rubik’s Cube – post a couple of midday schooners.”

The Adjudicator’s verdict: “Anyone prepared to tip the Bulls here? I’ll deliver my final verdict on Friday.”

Queensland Reds v Sharks, Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane, Saturday 7.40pm (EST)

The Adjudicator says: “Let’s get Quade Cooper’s tackle out of the way early shall we? I honestly didn’t think there was too much in it. But you had the feeling those crazy cats at SANZAR were likely to hand him a one, or even two-week siesta. As it stands, Cooper will be able to face the Chiefs in Hamilton next weekend, providing his teammates get the job done in Brisbane on Saturday. And, should they play like they did against those nitwits from Sydney, The Adjudicator has little doubt New Zealand’s public enemy No.1 will have the chance to catch up with those folks who made him feel so welcome last year. Still, maybe I’m not paying the Sharks the respect they deserve? John Plumtree’s side have already arrived in the sunshine state, choosing to base themselves amongst the Botox and boob-jobs of the Gold Coast. One of my Super Rugby favourites hasn’t made the trip however. Yes, folks. Sharks young gun, Patrick ‘The Roast’ Lambie, will be tuning into Supersport for this one – which is a massive blow to their chances. They’ve still got that cheeky little Frenchman, Freddie Michalak, to call the shots. The Adjudicator, however, can call recall more than a couple of occasions where the fromage enthusiast and former escargot-fermier went missing on the big stage – 2007 RWC quarter-final excluded.”

The Adjudicator’s verdict: “Can Michalak steal this one with another forward pass or will the Reds continue their amazing record at home? Let me know your thoughts by Friday.”

It comes from the British Parliament, I did debating at school and university in the so-called British Parliamentary style.

In the 1600s members of the floor in the parliament would shout “Hear him, hear him!” to direct attention to a speaker; by the late 1700s this had contracted to the shorter, “hear, hear!”

One explanation to its popular usage in the British parliament is that applause is mostly forbidden in the House of Commons and the House of Lords.

So, now that the Stormers have achieved not only being top of SA Conference, but top of all Conferences, he is making the prize, which he held in esteem, as worthless. Riveting end to regular season

    ——————————————————————————–

    by Tony Johnson 16/07/2012, 09:53

After a tense weekend we have our play-off picture.

Even if it didn’t run right to the wire, to have to wait until 20 minutes from end of the final game to know who was through and who they’d play, again underlines that, for whatever faults it may have, Super Rugby is an intense, intriguing, high-octane competition.

Before we look ahead to the post-season, it might be worth reflecting on the performances of the three conferences.

    SOUTH AFRICA

This is the first time South Africa have three teams in the playoffs, and the first time it’s happened under the new format. The last time one country had three teams in the playoffs was 2009 when New Zealand had three teams in but the Bulls won.

The Stormers top the table. They had the most wins (14) and conceded comfortably the fewest points with their miserly defence. They collected the fewest bonus points (2) of any team and did not get a single four- try bonus point, which proves that the more you win, the less bonus points will come into the equation. They started well, got the hard work done in the middle stages, and despite a troubling run of injuries, came home on a relatively undemanding final stretch against the Lions, Cheetahs and Rebels.

They now have a much-needed week off before a home semi, either against the Crusaders, Bulls or Sharks.

•Strengths: Defence, home advantage, defence, Bryan Habana’s ability to score a big-moment try, defence.
    •Question mark: Injuries.
The Bulls may not quite have looked the unstoppable force of previous years, and have looked a bit battered in recent weeks, but they got the necessary points needed either side of their defeat to the Sharks. Their tactics will catch no-one by surprise but they are very effective at what they do.

•Strengths: Big strong pack, mercurial brilliance of Francois Hougaard, kicking game.
•Question mark: Travelling all the way to play the Crusaders in Christchurch is no-one’s idea of fun.
The Sharks may have got through only in sixth place, but to me they look one of the teams to beat. They have every chance of toppling the Reds in Brisbane, and quite possibly the Stormers back in Cape Town the following week.

•Strengths: Real momentum, strike power on the wings, some awesome ball carrying ability in the forwards, led by Bismark du Plessis.
•Question marks: no Frans Steyn…that’s the risk you take with late call ups, and it’s a fair rule, but they’ll have to do without his howitzer boot, a potential match winner. To win they will have to put in some serious air miles, which could catch up on them.
The others: The Cheetahs put in some worthy, and occasionally spectacular performances, but in the end lacked consistency and fell away. The Lions were a disaster. Each conference is entitled to one.

Total SA conference wins: 42. Total conference points: 247.

In summary: an intense, almost brutally competitive conference, reflective of a powerful base at provincial level. Some great new talent introduced.

    NEW ZEALAND

Two teams through, in second and fourth, one just missing out in the final weekend, four still in the hunt going into the last three weeks and just one dud, the Blues. Not bad.

The Chiefs fell off top spot in the last week, beaten by a desperate Crusaders team well versed in winning when they really have to, and controversially pipped at the post in Wellington by the Hurricanes thanks to a TMO try that many would not have given.

They are a young team, and they will grow, but I have a suspicion they may not be quite good enough to go the distance this year. They will be home to either the Reds, Crusaders or Bulls in the semis. I would back them to beat the Reds, but not the Crusaders, who I suspect they will meet.

•Strengths: brilliant strike power in their backs, very good loose forwards.
•Question marks: Their lineout was better against the ‘Canes but their set piece has looked wobbly of late.
The Crusaders can thank an inexplicable loss to the Rebels in Melbourne and their surprise defeat to the Hurricanes, for not topping the conference and possibly even the whole log, but derby matches and the odd rogue defeat to an otherwise bum team are part of the trials and tribulations of Super Rugby.

They have never quite looked at full capacity, but I don’t think anyone will fancy playing them from here on in.

•Strengths: set piece, Carter, McCaw, Read, a heritage of doing well at the sharp end of the season.
•Question marks: Lack the midfield penetration of other years, a bit too dependent on Read for “go-forward”. His likely absence from this weekend’s clash with the Bulls is a bit of a concern for them.
Of the others: The Hurricanes did really well to be right in contention going into the last 12 hours of the league phase, with a young team after last year’s cleanout. They will go from strength to strength.

The Highlanders were again competitive before falling away towards the end. The Blues had a shocking season, which raises the question: how come the teams from the biggest city in each conference performed so poorly? There will be changes.

Total NZ conference wins: 46. Total conference points: 264.

In summary: The number of wins and conference points reflects favourably. Again New Zealand teams proved very good at pulling the rug out from under each other, but that’s not a bad sign. Also crowd numbers and TV viewing figures showed a sharp increase. Like SA, introduced some startling new talent.

    AUSTRALIA

I thought having a couple of relative “easy beats”: would enhance their chances of multiple representation in the playoffs. Instead they got one team through, a team that, were it not for the guaranteed top-three spot for conference winners (a clause I might add, that was introduced at Saru’s insistence), would have qualified sixth, not third.

The Reds topped the conference, to the obvious delight of the Queenslanders in the Aussie commentary team, knocking the Brumbies right out of the picture when they had led the conference table for so long.

To be fair, the Queenslanders have had plenty of injuries this year, and have come right at the right time, but I think to beat the Sharks they will need to reach a new level.

•Strengths: The Suncorp Stadium factor, the world’s best halfback, a canny coach, game breakers.
•Question marks: No James Horwill, possibly no Quade Cooper. How good are they really?
Of the others: The Brumbies were way better than expected, so credit to Jake White for breaking up the old player-dominated regime, but in the end, losing at home to the Blues showed they weren’t quite good enough.

The Waratahs had injuries but were boring and clueless, the Force battled but never looked like featuring, and despite their rogue win over the Crusaders, the Rebels continue to resemble a kitset team, with star players who at times look like they don’t really care.

Total Aus conference wins: 32. Total conference points: 210.

In summary: To have three teams in the bottom five is hardly a ringing endorsement of Australia’s claim to five teams in the competition, and does raise the question as to whether it is a good thing for the game in Aus to have their talent spread out so thinly, especially when it means over-inflated bidding for the top stars while they have at the same time tended to fill out their complements with often-fading overseas players, and youngsters lured from New Zealand, South Africa and the Pacific Islands with the promise of pro contracts if they commit to being available for Australian national teams down the track.

That said, they too have uncorked some very good young players, especially the clutch of outstanding young flankers, and we shouldn’t make the mistake of thinking a poor showing in Super Rugby will translate to a poor Wallaby side, because SR form rarely translates to the international stage.

    PICKS FOR THE WEEKEND

I’m picking the Sharks to win in Brisbane, requiring them to dash back to Cape Town, and the Crusaders to hold off the Bulls in Christchurch and set up an all-Kiwi semi in Hamilton, thus guaranteeing an SA-NZ final…and I wouldn’t assume it is going to be in Cape Town or Hamilton either.

Mitch to step into the Den

According to the friendly folks at Beeld, suspended Lions coach John Mitchell will finally get his day in court, with his disciplinary hearing scheduled to start this morning.

Mitchell was temporarily relieved of his duties as head coach just under a month ago, following dark mutterings of a player revolt. Union president Kevin de Klerk later came forward to reveal that player unhappiness was only one of the concerns behind the Lions’ decision to suspend their coach, with several other (more serious and far more sinister) issues also on the table. Perhaps, after today, we’ll finally get to hear what those issues actually were

White settlers never stole any land from Africans: iLIVE

Black Africans NEVER owned any land. Any form of formal ownership is a Western concept. The ‘black’ tribes of the mid 19th century haphazardly SETTLED in an ad hoc manner – effectively governed by tribal savagery, in other words, the most savage ruled the land (a bit like Hillbrow today). They simply ran away until they could not run anymore – not having ANY grasp of the concept of a horizon or for that matter any measure of finite land mass – eg the boundaries – that is the fundamental concept of ownership.

Who “disadvantaged” the ‘black’ people of the interior in Southern Africa before the (supposed) belligerent ‘white’ settlers moved inland in the mid 19th century..? As certainly, what the ‘settlers’ found was not a hugely advanced infrastructure, deep mines, airports, vast libraries of written works, grandiose institutions of learning, etc. No, as little as 170 years ago they found masses of black people (indigenous to the Southern tip of Africa, The San) living on the fringes of the stone age. Beings in skins, wielding sticks, living primitive dwellings, dragging and carrying things around, who had not even invented the wheel yet.

Insert by Herman Griessel:- The San were the indigenous people of Southern Africa, if there needs to be any Land Reform it should be with the San, the rest of the Black African tribes as well as the White are and were all immigrants to Southern Africa, including Zimbabwe, and from other parts of the world and Northern Africa.

The linguistic core of the Bantu family of languages, a branch of the *****-Congo language family, was located in the region of modern Cameroon and Eastern Nigeria. From this core, expansion began about three thousand years ago, with one stream going more or less east into East Africa, and other streams going south along the African coast of Gabon, Democratic Congo and Angola, or inland along the many south to north flowing rivers of the Congo River system. The expansion eventually reached South Africa probably as recently as 300 A.D

Ethiopia – a country that was NEVER colonised. Today one of the most desolate places on the planet – who “disadvantaged” the people of Ethiopia..?

Put Zimbabwe and Germany next to each other and please explain the differences. In 1945 Germany was (for all intents and purposes) flattened to the ground and torn in half. Fifteen years later, West Germany was described as an “Economic Wonder”. Around the same time as the end of Apartheid, Germany was re-unified. It yanked the (unified) Germany back four centuries in time.

Yet, in (around) fifteen years (for the second time in a few decades) it built an ‘economic wonder’ – today, fast becoming a global leader in almost every aspect. Reminder: a lineage very strongly associated with… WHITE AFRIKAANS SPEAKING people…

Insert by Herman Griessel:- I am a third generation White South African semi retired Farmer, my Grandfather arrived in the Cape in 1895, having originated from Southern Bavaria Germany, and took part in the second Boer War (1899 – 1902), against the English off course. I disinvested in Agricultural Land in South Africa in 1994, 16 farms employing ± 2, 000 Black African people, I could see what was coming, and here it now is. Google my name Herman Griessel, and read my story of farming on the borders of Southern Africa from 1975 and onwards.

On the ‘flip side’ – Zimbabwe – was handed one of the wealthiest countries in the WORLD (eg a currency that was worth more than the USA Dollar, etc) – what is it today..? Competing with Ethiopia to be the most desolate hell-hole on the planet..? Please explain…

Quote from Ian Johnston an ex Rhodesian, has published a book “Thru Thick ‘n’ Thin, a must read, and who happens to be my neighbour:- Remember ” We won the land from the mosquitoes and the tsetse flies”

And what he is implying here is that the White African Rhodesians, through the technology of the day, won back large tracts of land that was riddled with tsetse fly and Malaria, where before the Black African could not settle or graze their cattle, nothing was ever taken from them, in retrospect their very lives were enhanced and improved to the extreme in comparison.

The below insert from just the other day March 2011, this is what Zimbabwe has come to, and no one lifts a finger.

    By Tariro Madzongwe

HARARE, Mar 25, 2011 (IPS) – The identity of as many as a thousand decomposing bodies in an abandoned mine in Mount Darwin, 100 kilometres north of Harare, may never be known. “War veterans” associated with the ruling Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front party are removing them with no regard for preserving evidence.

You cannot take something from somebody WHO NEVER HAD IT..! In fact, what is it that white people, specifically white men, is supposed to “give back” to black people..? Can someone PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE explain to me what it is that white men took from blacks?

Money, Capital and the pivotal mechanisms of the wealth that allows you to breathe, eat, have children, live a rather healthy productive and fulfilling life, but also allowed the cognitive development that leads to metropolitan development and infrastructure as we see it today – it is ALL of Western origins. In fact, the key advancements in modern finance and economics were made by the… ….DUTCH. Why do you think it is called ‘Wall Street’..? It was initially ‘Wal Straat’ – yes my dear, the Dutch took their cognitive substance there as well… The same Dutch that were the most direct descendants of the people that landed at the Cape in 1652 – in fact, the modern ‘WEALTH system’ was originated by the Dutch and it funded the explorations around the tip of Africa.

Mmmm… I just hate the implicit assumption that ‘whites’ stole from ‘blacks’…

    Author: J. Theron – Brisbane Australia – July 2011

Insert from London Times: “South Africa is the only country in the world where affirmative action is in the favour of the majority who has complete political control. The fact that the political majority requires affirmative action to protect them against a 9% minority group is testament to a complete failure on their part to build their own wealth making structures, such that their only solution is to take it from others.”

Pat Lam: “I’ve taken the final hit”

you gotta love kiwi drama :D

Outgoing Blues coach Pat Lam offered thinly-veiled criticism of the beleaguered franchise when delivering an impassioned valedictory at the team base in Auckland on Tuesday.

Lam compared his season coaching the side to lowest place in the New Zealand Super Rugby conference to fighting in the trenches.

“I sort of feel in my time here I have been out in the front line.

“I sat out in the front line taking shots left, right and centre and I sort of feel that this year particularly was the biggest war ever.

“I didn’t mind being out in the front because all the time I was out there I protected this franchise, I protected the people in it, I protected the team and the players.

“It appears I have taken the final hit,” he said.

“I never threw anyone under the bus. This franchise means a lot to me…sometimes people have to take the hit for it and I will take that, and I don’t mind, so long as things are done to ensure that this franchise is all it should be.”

The same selection panel as named John Kirwan as his replacement as coach from next month, had given Lam an 87 percent mark last year and he believed as a result of the experiences he endured this year he had emerged as a better coach.

The people who mattered, the players, knew he had given everything to the job and he left the position with head high.

Lam said after receiving a visit from Blues chairman Gary Whetton and Blues chief executive Andy Dalton to inform him of the decision that his parting wish was that the board and Dalton give Kirwan everything he needed to help the team succeed.

“Ultimately, this [Auckland] is my home town, this is my team. No matter where I am around the world, no matter where I go this will always be my team. I want this team to be successful,” he said.

“I just plead that JK [Kirwan] gets everything he needs. He’s a good man,” he said.

And this set you off on a vile and completely irrelevant rant about my wife and kids. You even asked me how many kids I had so that I could prove I was getting some action.

Seriously? You want to tell me that’s normal? You want to convince the other bloggers here that you were somehow justified? You want us to believe that the amount of kids one has somehow defines who you are? (I have two, by the way, not that it’s any of your business)

@Skeppie(Skeppie)-324: Aussie and Kiwi kids are given a lot more leeway in terms of ‘thinking for themselves’ and ‘finding their own identities’ from a young age.
In SA, our kids don’t have that luxury. Probably because 95% of the parents have spent their whole lives ‘fitting into’ a specific race, culture or language.
We are told where we belong, and how to act in order to keep belonging. Deviate from that – and BOOM.

And I must be very honest with you, this is one of my Heyneke Meyer gripes. The man is supposedly a wonderful psychologist and motivator. YET: he more than any other Bok coach before him, has laid it out in black and white (with no room for maneuvering) – his type of player, his game plan, his religion etc. Once more – players forced into ‘groups’…..no room for anything beyond this.
(And he is on record as saying these things)

National psyche and Calvinistic leanings…….I cal it ou-doos and narrow minded.

This guy is actually quite funny. Always enjoy reading his column. He’s not a rugby journo by the way.

3 stumbling blocks to Stormers’ success
    By David Mosely.

I’m a fan. A big fan. Every time I swear that I’ll never return to Newlands, I’m back in the bleak stands of that decrepit stadium the following week. I can’t stay away.
But this year has been a challenge. For the first time since the Stormers brand was created I can quite honestly say that I have not enjoyed watching the team progress.
There are those that will cry “winning rugby” in their defence. Yes. Of course. Winning rugby. And their tactics may well work over the course of the semi-final and the final of the Super Rugby tournament.

The Stormers could be champions playing the worst kind of rugby imaginable. And well done to them if they pull it off. But if they are to succeed, there are three stumbling blocks they need to overcome…
(Please note: every time I back my beloved team, they fold hopelessly. This, therefore, is an extreme attempt to reverse the trend).

    1 No plan B
The Stormers seem to be operating along the lines of X-man Wolverine’s famous motto – “I’m the best at what I do. But I do isn’t very nice”. The Stormers are top. Statistically, they are the best. But it hasn’t been very nice.
They’ve lost just twice, albeit rather ominously to the two sides that they could face in the next two weeks, the Crusaders and the Sharks, and although they’ve defeated all other comers, every game has been a scratchy, nerve-wracking, fingernail-chewing affair. Why? Because there is no plan B.

If plan A works (defend, defend, defend, hack ahead, hope for intercept) no one can get past the Stormers. But if it goes awry, as it did against the Crusaders, the Stormers are in trouble.

They don’t appear to have the ability to create something out of nothing (Juan de Jongh’s sexy, swaying hips aside). They’ve been playing finals rugby all season, the kind of rugby that wins World Cups. Unfortunately, in the final they’ll be playing the Crusaders (the Bulls don’t have a hope), a team as comfortable with finals stress as John Mitchell is with daggers in his back, or the Chiefs, a side with more than one avenue of attack.
That’s if the Stormers make the final, of course.

    2 The Sharks
There’s a lot of ‘if’ here, but it’s food for thought as we go into the play-off weekend. As a Stormers fan, the Sharks scare me. At Newlands the home side eked out a narrow victory in league play. In Durban, despite only losing 25-20, the Stormers were never in it. The Sharks will beat the Reds this weekend, of that I’m certain. Even without Frans Steyn (aka World’s Angriest Rugby Player) and Patrick Lambie, the Sharks are playing the kind of rope-a-dope rugby that baffles the hell out of opposing teams.

First half, they hang off the ropes, looking all the world like a jelly-chinned prize fighter on his last legs and then, miraculously, they appear after halftime and play like world beaters. JP Pietersen is the best wing in business at present, while Bismarck and Willem Alberts are terrifying.

In fact, right now in Queensland, 15 men are crying themselves to sleep, some waking in the middle of the night, screaming “mommy” into the darkness. But it’s not darkness, it’s Alberts’ giant mitt shading the sun and pummeling an Aussie face.

Simply, the Sharks can play thrilling rugby from nowhere. The Stormers can’t. In a tense South African derby, they’ll be the team to come out tops.

    3 Expectation
Never have I been more gutted than the day the ‘old’ Men in Black Stormers made a home semifinal against the Highlanders, started with a bang as Breytie dived over, and proceeded to choke like stuffed roasting pigs for the rest of the game. If ever there was a year that was theirs, it was 1999. I’ve never recovered.

Now let’s give credit where it’s due. What this side has achieved is nothing short of remarkable. They are a team packed with youngsters, fielding a hooker at eight, missing wily veterans like Schalk Burger, Duane Vermeulen and Pieter Rossouw, held together by their Elastoplast captain and hindered by a game plan that takes its toll on the body like no other. Finishing the regular season top of the log is an amazing victory already. But should they reach a home final, things could fall apart.

There are cool heads in Peter Grant and Jean de Villiers, but not much finals experience elsewhere. If their tactics start to unravel in a final against the Crusaders or Chiefs, moments of brilliance will be required, moments that have been few and far between all season.

The expectation from the press, fans and the match day crowd could prove the biggest stumbling block of them all. Finishing top, losing just twice, any side they play in the final will have traveled extensively to get there. The trophy is basically the Stormers, bar the engraving, right?

Either way, Stormers fans, we’re in for a squeaky bum two weeks

Bosman is not the best midfield defender but at 10 he is closer to the forwards.

He is a robust carrier and distributor when the game opens up, particularly in the closer channels. Watch the tape of the Bulls/Sharks game at Loftus this year :)

that clip of Alberts vs Bulls has more barnstorming head down vokmavoort runs into Bulls midfield than tackles, Alberts is a far better ball carrier than a tackler.

In fact Alberts and Bismark are the two chief proponents of any Sharks potential to progress as was painfully obvious when Plumtree started vs Cheetahs without them Sharks were getting hammered left right and center…

And PdV decided not to start either of them in his campaign for the 2011 WC.. he thought captain fatfck Barney was a better option at 2 and Pierretjie Spiesertjie at 8 with Schalk Burger at 7 was the way to go…pity he had to lose to find out how wrong he was… as so many other rugby fundi’s here and elsewhere were still baffled by the Smit halo conundrum..

Smit should NEVER have started ahead of Bismark.. and Alberts should have ALWAYS started at either 7 or 8..

Between Smit, Spies, Burger and FdP.. Boks lost the 2011 WC..

I checked out KP’s claim today.Apparently after taking a few wickets and scoring a very aggressive 60 odd against the English touring team he was dropped by the Dolphins for their next game.In his book he states that he felt deeply hurt at this treatment.Apparently Nasser Hussein was very impressed with his performance and encouraged him to go to County cricket…and the rest as they say are history. In England he played for Nottinghamshire and when he complained that the pitch was hindering his batting he was told to f-off by the Notts captain.Well he actually already decided to leave Notts when they got relegated.Looks like Kevin was born with an ego.

Someone mentioned this just yesterday and it is so true.

A few years back it used to be Bulls vs Stormers on this site.

Everything went apeshiyit for a while (transie and hater (rossoneri) joined the site at that time and did their best troll impressions to upset the “establishment”) and the Bulls left in droves.

There are hardly any Bulls fans left on here whilst the numbers of Stormers has multiplied like bugweed seeds shat out by birds.

Things have simmered here for a while but it now looks as Stormers vs Sharks has taken on the main billing.

I am glad to see my fellow Sharks giving the Stormers a bloody nose, not just on the rugby field.

As a Bulls fan I could never understand the pure venom between the Stormers/WP and Sharks fans

I could understand if they hated us, but why each other?

They’re both the same type of coastal teams, one more English speaking, the other more Afrikaans but still shouldn’t the fans have more in common?

Surely it’s obvious that the loss of Cooper is a problem for the Reds. How is this a big insight from the Keo team?

“Get Genia” is what teams have done because it is so obvious.

Unscientifically I would say that Genia gets to the breakdown much faster than any scrum-half in Super Rugby. And he’ll do that for 80 minutes. His pass is excellent and his sniping is excellent. Most significantly his ability to fool inside channel defenders, straighten up, and break the line, is just brillant.

Every Shark player that could possibly be playing pillar defense needs to hear that you commit to the Genia tackle every time; never buy the dummy and never let him through on the inside.

If you force Genia into a predictable passing game the Reds attack becomes ordinary, and the absence of Cooper exacerbates that.

The only fans on Keo.co.za who genuinely seem not to take things too seriously are the Stormers fans. Win or lose they are always here chatting and have done so since the start of Keo.co.za. HeavenShame and his Freaky Family however disappear in sulking fits of angst and bad sportsmanship when their team loses. So it is obvious to anyone with an intelligence quotient above a single digit just who takes themselves and things too seriously.
If the definition of insanity is endlessly repeating the same task expecting difference results how would Einstein define repeating the same smutty schoolboy jokes for years on end and still sniggering and snuggering at them every single time they tell these hackneyed jokes. Raving straitjacket lunatics escaped from the mental asylum no doubt.

  • 817.Dirty Harry: Reply to this comment

The only angst and tension on exhibition here to the neutral rugby lover is from the Fritzl Family of Sharks supporters. Before the kick of the first match these geniuses all predicted the Sharks would not only win local conference but also win the Super 15too. They all predicted the newly crowned Currie Cup Champions would thrash the Stormers and that the Stormers would come stone last. They have made the same prediction every week since then that the Stormers would slide down to the bottom of the log too. Now they are wringing their hands in worry and whimpering like petrified fools in fear of the Stormers winning the Super Rugby Trophy. Now these integrity-less fools think say the Conference title they so coveted is meaningless. Now they have made the play-offs they think they are the best team in the competition and have already won the Cup. They believe they just have to grace Brisbane with their aura and the Reds will roll over and die. The arrogance of these fools is stupefying.
Coach Coetzee proved all his detractors wrong that if they keep winning bonus points become irrelevant. The Sharks were six bonus points short of a conference win. The Stormers have been the most consistent team in the competition. The fact is that this year in this competition the Stormers are the best team. Sharks fans need to demonstrate a little grace and accept this fact but we all know they will not.

DNA test results have proved that Wooden Spoon and Sharks Lover are indeed members of the Fritzl Freak Family. They have shown time and again that they just can not resist the temptation of dipping their oars into the muddy hole of HeavenShame. Along with petrock Predawn and Little SisterDaughter Fern Grandpa Sharks Lover and Little Son Wooden Spoon can’t wait to pleasure Daddy HeavenShame rutting like desperate weasels on crack whenever HeavenShame bends over to open his mouth.
Even the wise council of his ‘friends’ Stormersboy and UFO was flippantly dismissed yesterday by this phillipe-phillopping emochild trapped in a grannys body. Wooden Spoon declared himself resolved to rise out of the gutter but just could not help himself. One sniff of filth and he jumped right back in to wallow. As they say you can take the boy out of the gutter but you can’t stop him eating poo.

  • 819.Dirty Harry: Reply to this comment

I told you all and warned you that the sexually obsessed Fritzl Freak HeavenShame is not only a drunken alcoholic determined to drag everyone down into the gutter with him but that his other obsession with ‘multinics’ (a term he coined by the way) is because he uses them all the time to stir controversy and conflict between any bloggers enjoying talking about rugby. HeavenShame has denied he uses other nics crossing his heart and hoping to die if he tells a lie.
So when I challenged his statement criticizing ‘new’ bloggers his rush defense is that he has been on Keo.co.za for years before the ‘great trek’ where he used to blog under another nic. So good keozins far from ‘exposing’ anyone using a ‘multinic’ as he keeps threatening to do in his rush to cover one lie HeavenShame has exposed himself to another. He has been lying about the use of ‘multinics’.
Now exposed as a liar I wonder if HeavenShame will tell everyone:
1 What his original nic was when he “Was known as one of the wise men…”
2 Who dubbed him a “wise man”
3 Why he felt the need to change his nic and
4 Why did he hide the fact that he was ‘an old blogger’ from people who respected him as a “wise man” until now?
What is laughable is that you try to hang the ‘multinic’ stigma on those who have called you up for being the pathetic repugnant deceiver you are. You can not challenge them intelligently through your alcoholic haze so resort to crying they use ‘multinics’ because it is impossible for them to prove a negative. Cunning of you but very obvious and transparent to any intelligent blogger here.

Ever since I have blogged under this current Nic only, other than losing some name changer bets to Skop, Cab and Stormersboy, of course.
If you do know of any other Nics that you think I blog under please tell me… It will be news to me… However it seems you and the rest of my cheerleaders – WeeWee and Stawmy the HiddenHomo are seeing HG shadows everywhere… I am in your minds
