Sharper side will take Brisbane spoils

Sharper side will take Brisbane spoils

JON CARDINELLI analyses Saturday’s clash in the Queensland capital and writes that the winner may not be the side that makes the big plays, but rather the team that makes the fewest errors.

It may seem an obvious statement to make, but then the Reds and Sharks have been anything but consistent this season.

Both have scraped through to the play-offs despite some woeful performances where the inconsistencies have cost them the result. There have also be instances where these teams have mixed the accurate with the erratic, and have still managed to come out on top.

If this is to be accepted, then what insight can statistics provide? Indeed, both teams should be expected to play more conservatively in a knockout match than they have in recent rounds. Four-try bonus points are no longer a priority, and this could be reflected in either team’s approach.

But there is something to be gained by examining the stats of the Round 4 clash between these two teams. There is also value in the statistics when you look at how the referee for this match, Jonathan Kaplan, has officiated over the course of the 2012 season.

If we look at who is available for the coming match, and who was available for that Round 4 game in Durban, there are key differences but also many similarities. The Sharks will be without Pat Lambie this weekend, who played flyhalf in that previous game. The Reds are likely to play the same halfback pairing of Will Genia and Ben Lucas, as Quade Cooper is not available until a possible semi-final. The big omission for Queenslanders on this occasion will be that of lock James Horwill.

The Sharks won the Round 4 match 27-22 after trailing 17-10 at half-time. It was a game where the Sharks started badly, but found form as the match progressed. It was also a game where the Reds were hampered by a number of injuries throughout and were forced to finish with scrumhalf Genia in the flyhalf channel.

According to ruckingoodstats.com, both teams were guilty of many turnovers on that occasion, with the Reds (19) worse than the Sharks (14). The Reds made 10 handling errors on the day, and this obviously impacted on their ability to capitalise on a superior amount of possession (69% in the first half and 53% in the second). They may have also have edged the game but for some woeful goal-kicking where their kickers missed three attempts at posts.

Lambie was flawless in front of goal, converting all five attempts. But while the Sharks will miss Lambie’s influence in the side, it must be noted that he has since been shifted to fullback with Freddie Michalak coming in at No 10. And apart from lending the Sharks some impetus from that flyhalf position, Michalak has also maintained an impressive goal-kicking record (81%) over the course of the season.

If the Reds impede this Saturday, the Sharks will feel confident that Michalak can make the hosts pay on the scoreboard. Ruckingoodstats reveals that of the 15 teams that played Super Rugby this season, the Reds were ranked third for penalties conceded (they conceded 10.6 penalties per match on average). The Sharks are ranked seventh overall in this respect.

Breaking it down further, the Reds are the biggest culprits when in possession, conceding more penalties than any of the other 14 teams. And looking at the rucks and mauls, the Reds are ranked second for the most penalties conceded.

Scrums aren’t much better, with the Reds conceding the third most penalties. The Sharks will have noted this weakness, and as they boast one of the strongest and most disciplined scrums, they will surely look to target the Reds in this area.

At the other set piece, however, it is the Reds that are more threatening. They are ranked second in the competition for winning the lineout against the throw. Considering their weakness at the scrum, they should look to disrupt the Sharks at the lineout.

While the Reds have conceded a number of penalties while in possession, and a fair few at the breakdown, they are proficient in making breakdown steals (3.9 per match). They have some specialists in Liam Gill and Beau Robinson, as well as hooker Saia Faingaa, who excel in this respect.

It will also help that Kaplan is officiating this fixture, as the South African is one of the more lenient referees at the ruck and maul (Kaplan is ranked 15th out of 19 Super Rugby referees in terms of penalties awarded in these areas). This may allow the Reds to maintain possession a bit more than usual, and also have more of a crack at the breakdown turnover when they’re defending.

But where Kaplan is far less generous is at the scrum, and as the superior team in this area, the Sharks should benefit. Kaplan is ranked fifth when it comes to infringements awarded at this set piece.

He also tends to award more penalties than free kicks and there are only four refs in the competition who offer fewer scrum resets than Kaplan. In short, if the Reds impede or fail to set properly, Kaplan is unlikely to give them another crack. The Sharks have conceded the fewest scrum infringements in the tournament.

Suncorp Stadium is often described as the perfect ground on which to play running rugby, and it’s true that both sides have a penchant for a fast-paced approach. But the occasion may demand a tighter, less risky game plan, and the margin for error will be small.

The Reds may not have Cooper available for this play-off, but they do have a reliable goal-kicker in Mike Harris (who has a 77% success rate). It is for this reason the Sharks will also need to ensure they don’t impede within range of the goal posts.

Their big banker will be Michalak, who will be tasked with turning Reds infringements and errors into points.

Kaplan will have a huge influence on this game. He hammered the reds in their last game with him in charge. I doubt the Aussies are happy about this.

Hopefully he swallows his whistle and lets the game flow for once.

Can’t compare the two teams to the two teams that played in R4, both improved substantially since then. Reds know how to break down a side in 80 minutes but this will only happen if the Sharks allow it.

As for Suncorp, lots of rain last week up to today and light falls predicted for the rest of the week. Won’t be muddy but will be soft underfoot and probably murky/slippery ball conditions.

kaplan is a “momentum” referee, he awards freebie points to the team going forward especially in the red zone (excuse the pun) teams are almost assured of 3 points as kaplan summarily pulls out his hand whether an infringement is visible or not.

Nelson Mandela spent 27 years in jail: that is approximately:

    * 324 months
    * 9720 days

It’s an awful long time and precious time that he cannot get back to invest in his children and their children. Today Madiba is loved all over the world, but I think we will insult the man if we don’t reflect on what he fought for: he just believed that every man is equal; its that simple.

Today is a commercialised icon and at times you would think he fought FOR Afrikaners the way they carry on, but we will miss the point if we’re not careful.

We idolise Madiba but violate the principles he stood (and continue to stand) for and see those that pursue justice and fairness (yes even around us) as the enemy (or someone with a hidden agenda)

In this regard Afrikaners and indeed the broader white population of SA that continue to hog the resources of the country need to have a change of heart. We are all winners if we are all better off.

the Sharks have more than a handful of Springboks including some Key players like Alberts and Bismark and JPP.

The Reds have more than a handful of Wallabies including some key players like Genia, Higginbotham and Digg-me.

So will this be a forerunner of international form to come??

    Probably not.

The Sharks, full of talented players as they are, have this season lacked that special element that distinguishes a Championship team from playoff hopefuls.

Players like Jean DeVilliers, Eben Etsebeth and Joe Pieterson.

Yes he is a great man and must be applauded and respected for what he did (and didn’t do) but to use his name as an excuse to expect those that have to simply give it back is disappointing and indicative of the very sense of entitlement that pervades this country and holds many of those same “excluded” back from trying to make it themselves because they would rather someone gives it to them.

You need to remember that favourable conditions (as created by those in Govt) existed generations ago for whites to accumulate wealth. Education was geared towards ensuring that we have cheap black labour and white management.

Today’s generation is arrogant because they feel they worked hard for it and to an extent they have and continue to do so. However they forget how it is that they could attend university, own a farm and so on. Apartheid was an economic system justified on self-made religious grounds. To this Afrikaners still yearn for some form of consolation, they still think they are somehow ‘called by God to do this and that…’

And don’t think I’m in favour of the type of corruption we see today; it is just as repulsive as the corruption of the Nats

NATS were no saints either. Their main fault was religion based first and foremost. They honestly believed that to keep their faith pure, their blood lines had to be pure. No mixing at any level. Even English speaking people were marginalized against, obviously not anywhere near the extent of other race groups. Religion again has played a role in destroying society.

Rumors abound that many spectators and staff at the Cheetahs match had to be treated for psychological trauma after seeing the most bizarre sight during the rugby match.

Unconfirmed reports (probably untrue) say that a Sharks forward (Coetzee?) ran through a gap instead of running around it.
Experts have dismissed this claim as being highly unlikely, impossible in fact.

BUT YOU DON’T BIN SIR RICHIE: Crusaders skipper Richie McCaw being spoken to by ref Steve Walsh.

    Opinion
NZC bosses should fry over sending raw CapsSerial cheats Crusaders prosper by conning refsBlues job a tough assignment for John Kirwan Bulls won’t change tactics for CrusadersThe inevitability of Tour De France sabotageLondon scores first Summer Games hat-trickLin deal shows there’s no room for sentimentSimple remedy to Super Rugby’s TMO fiascoNo encores for awful WaratahsBulls’ eye-gouging claim rouses Crusaders

OPINION: Twelve months ago thousands of neutral rugby fans were backing the Crusaders.

After the horrors of the two earthquakes, we hoped Christchurch could derive some shreds of momentary joy from the performance of their rugby team. No more. Some of us now hope that any team but the Crusaders wins the Super Rugby.

Richie McCaw’s post-match eloquence and decency is in contrast to his coach’s one-eyed remarks and hides a multitude of sins. Too many of the Crusaders intimidate referees, take cheap shots at the opposition and serially cheat around the ruck and maul.

It is a cultural malaise that is presumably encouraged by the coaching staff and sets a terrible example to young players around the country.

Let’s deal with the intimidation of referees first, because this is a problem that is affecting all levels of rugby in the country. McCaw says far more than he should to referees and uses his status to influence games.

Too often the Crusaders are officiated by New Zealand refs who are clearly in awe of the man. Instead of telling McCaw to shut up, they hang on every word.

Bryce Lawrence, a ref who facilitated a Crusaders victory against the Reds earlier this season, is the worst offender.

Don’t take my word for it. Before the match against the Hurricanes Sean Fitzpatrick said: “Richie has had the wood on him [Lawrence]”.

This is a former All Blacks captain saying that McCaw has control of a referee. Michael Lynagh then added: “He [Lawrence] appears lenient towards the Crusaders.”

After the game Fitzpatrick said: “I thought they [the Canes] didn’t always get the rub of the green. I thought the referee was pretty harsh on them on a number of occasions, especially at the breakdown.”

Not according to Todd Blackadder. The Crusaders coach said after his team’s defeat: “There were two tries that shouldn’t have been awarded, for a start. These things they hurt you and they kill you.”

Even though in the opinion of many, including a former All Blacks captain, the ref favoured the Crusaders overall, Blackadder still gave him the bird.

The Crusaders work on referees as a group. Andy Ellis plays the nice cop, giving the refs a pat, trying to keep them onside. Kieran Read, like McCaw, uses his growing status to get at refs.

How often have we seen his look of wide-eyed amazement followed by a querying, some would say dissenting, shake of his head.

Against the Chiefs, Corey Flynn was warned by referee Steve Walsh for appealing too loudly. Ellis, of course, reacts to his team-mate’s rebuke by patting Walsh sympathetically.

He would have done better to have told his forwards to desist because Luke Romano then appealed for a crooked lineout throw and pumped his fist at the opposition after getting the decision. Charming.

Yet unlike the Crusaders, the Chiefs’ coaching staff didn’t whinge after the defeat. They could have justly pointed out that Romano’s try should have been disallowed because one of the Franks brothers was offside at the kick and, far from retreating, was actually trying to play the ball.

    Ad Feedback

They could have pointed out that Sam Whitelock was off his feet when he drove Ellis over the line, despite Lyndon Bray’s very odd assertion to the contrary.

They could have asked why not one Crusaders player was binned as they serially cheated in the final, desperate two minutes. Ah, but you don’t bin Sir Richie.

The Chiefs could conclude from all this that intimidation of referees is something that works. How on earth did Vinny Munro award those two TMO tries against the Force at the weekend?

Nathan Sharpe was complimentary about the Crusaders afterwards, while wryly observing: “They scored four tries in the first half. Not sure how they got a couple of them but they did.”

When the points are added up at the end of the season, young, inexperienced, quiet sides like the Canes and the Brumbies lose out. You could even call them disciplined sides, but the lesson is that discipline doesn’t pay.

The Crusaders haven’t had the best of seasons, but they have controlled enough refs to start the playoffs at home. They shouldn’t even be there.

When junior players see the Crusaders prospering through verbal intimidation, is it any wonder that they imitate the country’s top players. Last week a Wairarapa ref retired after 20 years because he was fed up with the abuse.

“Enough is enough,” he said. “The union has to ensure that those who act outside the spirit of the game are held to account.”

They could start with the Crusaders. Apart from the intimidation of refs, Romano and the Franks brothers frequently hit late and dangerously. The Crusaders forwards are also the most cynical bunch at the tackle area.

When they have the ball, they hold and obstruct. When they are the tackler, they rarely roll away and if they do, it is towards the opposition halfback who they “accidentally” impede.

The home crowd don’t appear to care, so long as their team wins. Far too many booed the referee at the weekend when he quite correctly disallowed two tries, one for a grotesquely forward pass, the other when Adam Whitelock was in danger of getting to the tryline ahead of the ball, he was so far offside.

Despite plenty of individual brilliance and decency, the Crusaders have become an unappealing bunch. Maybe something decent died when Brad Thorn left.

Whatever the cause, I hope the Crusaders lose and come back next season with a proper respect for referees.

SPIRO: SANZAR Stuffs up referrees for Reds and Crusaders.

By Spiro Zavos, 18 Jul 2012

SANZAR has stupidly threatened the integrity of the qualifying finals this weekend between the Crusaders and Bulls and the Reds and Sharks by appointing two South African referees to officiate in matches involving two South African sides.

This stupidity runs against all the history and protocols of most major international sports where neutral referees are required for the big finals.

Brett McKay: Brumbies take the gas in one last weekend of Super Rugby drama

It is unthinkable, for instance, that a New Zealand referee, say, would have been appointed to referee the final of the 2011 RWC tournament when New Zealand played France.

Heineken Cup finals, too, are refereed by neutral referees. This system of neutral referees is long-standing (aside from Super Rugby) and is fair and is seen to be fair.

On Monday, though, SANZAR’s game manager, Lyndon Bray (an excellent referee in his day) announced that the South African, Paco Peyper, will be the referee for the Crusaders – Bulls match, with assistants New Zealanders Keith Brown, Glen Jackson and TMO Garratt Williamson: and that South African Jonathan Kaplan will be the referee for the Reds – Sharks match, with the South African Craig Joubert an assistant and the Australians James Leckie (assistant) and Matt Goddard as TMO.

The justification for these appointments, according to Bray, is that the two referees fulfilled three key criteria – overall performance, accuracy of the big calls and the ‘right fit for the game.’

Pardon my french but this is codswallop.

To begin with the last criterion first: Kaplan is well past his prime as a referee. How he can be regarded as the ‘right fit’ for a match between two sides that like to run the ball and play at a high pace is beyond my understanding.

Peyper being a ‘right fit’ for the Crusaders – Bulls match is even more objectionable. Peyper refereed the Bulls – Crusaders match at Pretoria earlier in the year. This match is infamous for the fact that the Crusaders were leading comfortably around the half-way mark when the Bulls forwards Flip van der Merwe and then Chiliboy Ralepelle claimed they were eye-gouged.

No evidence of the eye-gouging was produced, either to Peyper on the field and to the citing commissioner, who confirmed there was no case for the Crusaders to answer as the Bulls had not offered any evidence to support the on-field claims of Bulls players.

It is history now that on the back of eight successful penalties out of 10 shots at goal, Morne Steyne kicked the Bulls to a 32-30 victory.

Crusaders were unhappy with Peyper’s refereeing performance and demanded an apology from the Bulls for their offensive claims

We need some history to understand the implications behind the ditching of the neutral referee protocol.

In 2007 the South African officials were in control of the SANZAR refereeing appointments. They listed 10 front line referees, six of them South African. They also said that the practice of neutral referees would be dropped for pool round matches. They implied that for the finals the neutral referees system would be used.

In fact, local referees were used for some of the finals with Jonathan Kaplan refereeing the Bulls versus Chiefs final at Pretoria.

As someone has pointed out, how would the Bulls react if Bryce Lawrence had been appointed to referee the Crusaders versus Bulls qualifying finals match?

Now the referees appointments are controlled by the New Zealander Lyndon Bray out of Auckland. Unfortunately, he has continued with the practice of ignoring the well-established and long-standing practice of having neutral referees for the finals matches.

I have consistently argued that this is unfair to the referees themselves. They should never be exposed to unfair accusations from parochial and biased supporters. This, in turn, disturbs the notion that justice must not only be done but should be seen to be done.

This is an unacceptable stuff up on the part of SANZAR.

If anything think Kaplan could cost the Sharks on Saturday. I expect the 50/50 calls to go to the Reds. He always seems to go over board showing he is not biased when reffing a saffa side in Oz or Nz..

I personally would have liked a neutral ref for this game.

I give of my time and skill, NOT my money.

In terms of financial assistance, the only charities I support are those focused on the protection of animals. Far more deserving than 99.9% of the human ones registered. (And government sadly gives them absolutely zero assistance)

If one wants to ‘uplift’ anything ‘human’ give of your time, and share your skills. Throwing money at the problem doesn’t help anyone.
My money, as said above is reserved for those who ARE neglected and ignored by most – the long suffering animals in this country.

but there is a certain arrogance among the refs circles in sanzar where they do things just to be otherwise… how many times doesn’t one team get the same ref for three of four matches in close succession… and other not at all…

surely appointing refs for the comp is not that complicated… get the game roster for the season… put all the refs names in a hat… pull them out for the initial order and then assign them games repeating the sequence throughout the season…

but as the article puma posted too… we really need to get neutral refs IMO… even if they are all from six countries…

So by all means give a man R30 000 and a piece of land – but make sure you give him the skill, back end support and self belief to actually make the money and the land work for him. Without those things, the cash and land is just what I hate – a handout.

it would be easier to simply NOT put refs in a position where they can be accused of bias or cheating… appointing saffa refs for games of this magnitude is very shortsighted to me… if there are any mistakes… (and refs are human and make mistakes too… some more than others) instead of just being accepted as a mistake it will be labelled cheating and and blown out of all proportion…

i keep saying if only the games will be controversy free… but the referees management have already ensured they will be controversial…

    very shortsighted…

    @stormersboy(stormersboy)-53:

He wants your age so that he can discredit your argument by attacking your “credibility”. It doesn’t matter whether you are young or old.

Fact of the matter is that throughout history, in all countries and continents a particular group has always had power over another. Often there was no racial difference, sometimes language, sometimes religion, sometimes none of those things and it was purely the group who had been the historical nobility that held the advantage. People identify with groups and use that to their advantage when they can. It being race in SA is not more or less wrong than any other factor. It certainly does not imbued Sheriff with some righteous moral high ground. Only handwringing white liberals fall for that rubbish.

Those historical disparities are not corrected by poppy-**** moral appeals like Sheriff makes. Is he seriously asking you to give up resources to the detriment of your children? In a country where you have no power and where the very laws handicap their future? He is as delusional as my 101 year old grandmother.

The only solution is for the state to properly execute its mandate which is the delivery of municipal services, law & order and the creation of an environment to encourage top-drawer school and tertiary education. Because in practice whites are already “returning” resources. We pay more tax than we receive from the government in services. Blacks receive more and pay in less.

However, the government is not executing its primary responsibilities. So instead of Sheriff bemoaning the government’s failure he clearly shows his racial bias by wanting the whites to “return resources” in addition to the tax disparity. Moving a few assets around won’t help anything if the basic conditions of a successful country are absent. Clearly he doesn’t care. It is about getting his revenge or whatever. And preaching of course. But he can fly a kite. No one is returning resources en masse and if it is done by force he will reap terrible hardship for his group. It has been proven time and time again throughout Africa.

I mean, why is this idiot even bringing this up here on a rugby blog?

yes. bring back neutral refs – for every game. no argument.

the question – who would be this good guy for bloggers here?.Kiwis/Aussies here by default are labelled plonkers at best, if not cheats outright, so skip them. Europeans? I would gladly know the one who has been involved in reffing Saffa side and not being lambasted. Clancy? Rolland? White? Poite? Owens? Lewis? Barnes? They all have got their share. Especially when Boks lose which happens quite often.

    Who then?

@the artist formerly known as gunther(gunther)-201: Gary does seem to be reluctant to go in without a spinner – if his time in India has taught him anything, it is the value of having a wicket taking spinner around. Part timers can do a decent enough holding job when required – but attacking spinners win tests. It is helluva refreshing from a Saffa perspective – Thank you India, thank you consequence (someone sang that – Alannis possibly..)

I call her by her 1st name, and she calls me by mine.
I am paying for her children’s tertiary education and I have given her the gift of study as well (Dressmaking courses and a Catering course – BOTH of which she uses to earn additional income in the home industry she has set up. She also employs four ladies full time, and they do their thing for HER, when she is working for me. Indirectly, these 4 ladies have also benefited from S’s studies)

So to sum it up once more:
My housekeeper ‘S’ get’s to study and do what she wants with the knowledge she gains….she chose to make extra money.
Butch at the SPCA is still getting all my cash handouts – because unlike ‘S’, Butch can’t go and study or learn a new skill to improve his lot in life – he is stuck in a cage, totally dependent on people like me.

I am not saying that Tahir is not a good spinner but at the moment he is trying way too hard to impress. He doesn’t possess the one great thing a spinner should possess … and that is ‘patience’ .The great spinners like Warney would ,over for over, bowl the same ball ,and suddenly, with a slight adjustment ,bowl the unexpected delivery that gets their man.He needs to vary his pace of deliveries and just stop to try and bowl different balls in one over.

Darryl KNEW what was coming back in the day, he KNEW it – in fact he could have counted down the deliveries to his dismissal delivery to a ’5th ball of the 45th over’ but he would still be ‘flippered’ like a toddler.

    @Sheriff(Sheriff)-211:

Imo, its cultural differences – neither being right nor wrong, just different

“White” culture is very much focussed around the “3M’s” – Me, My & Material. Can be seen in simply everyday life:
    * Narrower family units and approaches to the family unit e.g. smaller family units itself, elderly sent to old aged homes so children can continue with “their” lives, etc
    * Greater focus on individual rights and priveleges
    * Cultural celebrations e.g. weddings are smaller affairs with the hosts carrying all the costs and invitees strictly controlled
    * Lesser spiritual focus with greater material focus

In contrast some other communities within South Africa take a more communal and dare i say even spiritual approach to life:
    * Larger family units with strong focus on responsibilty towards looking after parents (eldery homes are taboo)
    * Greater focus on group / community achievements – broad network amongst the community
    * Larger communal celebrations – e.g weddings are large, the community all contributes, invites are pretty much open
    * Greater spiritual focus

So when approaching the less priveledged, the former (“white”), based on their culturual views would see the notion of sharing with the lesser priviledged as being a handout, entitlement, etc. Some understandings are difficult to comprehend:
    * Vast difference between working hard from a solid home and relatively educated parents vs working hard from a rusty shack and uneducated parents
    * Having to share a portion of one’s material wealth as to serve a broader purpose or ideal

Conversely, the latter cultural groups, see’s greater importance in sharing of one’s material wealth in the name of broad upliftment. Its core part of their and their communities ethic. So would not view your views as being handout, entitlement, etc

Neither is wrong me friend, just different

I have respect for people like Pedigree that do their bit in the empowerment of the poor through their generosity.I call that social responsibility. They probably also go on holidays or weekends to places like Arniston etc etc,but unlike certain people on keo they don’t boast about it.We need more people who wants to correct social injustices and less of the ones that believe in their own self-worth,status and belonging to exclusive clubs like the over 180thousand club.

    Ex Boks complete IRB course

Cape Town – Eight former Springboks, all of them part of the South African Rugby Legends Association (SARLA) successfully completed the BokSmart Rugby Safety course and attended an IRB Level 2 Coaching workshop in Cape Town this week.

New SARLA CEO Stefan Terblanche, Dale Santon, Pieter Muller, Adrian Jacobs, Quinton Davids, McNeil Hendricks, Wayne Julies and Norman Jordaan were among a large group of former professional rugby players that completed the South African Rugby Union’s (SARU) rugby safety programme on Tuesday.

According to Dr Wayne Viljoen, BokSmart Manager at SARU, these former players have a significant role to play in their communities to ensure the game becomes safer.

“People look up to Springbok rugby players and they are the ones that set examples in their communities, which is why we’re very happy that they have taken time out from their busy schedules to complete the BokSmart course,” said Viljoen.

“Through their involvement with SARLA, they also play a very important development role in South African rugby, which is where we would like to see them implement what they’ve learned at the course.

“Rugby safety is something that affects all of us from the young kids playing barefoot up to Springbok level and it’s very important that the right techniques and actions are learnt from a young age.”

A total of 22 former Springboks and provincial players attended the IRB Level 2 RPL (Recognition for Prior Learning) workshop at DHL Newlands on Wednesday.

The workshop is a joint venture between SARU’s Coaching Development Department and SARLA to start a process to accredit former national and provincial players who want to pursue a career in coaching. This will be the first in a series of RPL workshops to accredit former players and experienced coaches.

According to Terblanche, who recently retired from the game after playing in 37 Tests for South Africa and more than 400 First Class matches for Boland, the Sharks, Ulster and Ulster, ploughing back into rugby is vitally important to grow the game.

“BokSmart is something anyone involved in rugby – be it as a top level player, coach, referee or a serious supporter – should get behind,” said Terblanche.

“As former Springboks, we take rugby safety very seriously, and therefore have all taken the time to get ourselves BokSmart certified accordingly. There should be no excuses for anyone involved in rugby or coaching at any level not to complete the BokSmart course. Rugby has given most of us so much over many years and it’s time we gave back to the game we all love so much.”

Former provincial players that joined the eight ex-Boks on both courses include Andries Human, Clarke Roberts, David Hendricks, Faiek Hendricks, Fareed Theunissen, Trevor Arendse and Eugene Maqwelana.

    Well done to these guys…!

update on the St Francis Bay U.F.O.s (unidentified found objects = previously thought to be whales)

NSRI: 4 of 5 containers found washed ashore.

Wednesday, 18th July, MRCC (Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre) confirmed that in total five containers, one of which was found washed ashore near to the Gamtoos River Mouth yesterday, were washed off the deck of the Chinese Ship Anguan Gjing, sailing from Durban to Nigeria, over the past weekend in heavy sea storms, between Port Elizabeth and St Francis Bay.

The containers were reportedly lost overboard the ship over a period of a few days over this past weekends heavy sea swells.

Maritime navigational safety warnings were broadcast by Maritime Radio Services warning of the navigational hazard to shipping in that vicinity.

Today, Wednesday, 18th July, Police located a further three containers, two washed up in the same vicinity as the one from yesterday and one has washed up near to St Francis Bay.

The outstanding one container is either still adrift at sea or it may have washed ashore on a remote location and may not have been discovered yet.

MRCC has confirmed that all 5 containers are empty and present no environmental or health risk (it may be suspected that normal sea water could have now leaked into the containers).

No decisions have been taken yet by Maritime authorities on the salvage of the containers which are in remote areas on barely accessible stretches of coastline.

It’s actually a pity because I think he would have been a good 10 or 12

I had to catch up fast – the wake up call was when my then 4 yr old pointed out that Steven Gerard (sp?) was a soccer player and I was unaware of that at the time :-)

The Reds are considering launching an 11th-hour appeal against Quade Cooper’s one-match suspension in a desperate bid to have the playmaker available for Saturday’s Super Rugby qualifier against the Sharks.

Cooper was rubbed out for a week on Monday after judicial officer Paul Tully found him guilty of a high tackle on Waratahs star Berrick Barnes following a marathon hearing.

The Reds have been talking up their ability to win without their enigmatic playmaker ever since the decision was handed down, indicating they would not appeal the decision.

However, a statement released on Wednesday confirmed the Queensland Rugby Union are ‘seriously considering’ fighting the ruling.

“We are obviously particularly sensitive to not disrupting the Reds team dynamics and preparation in launching an appeal at this late stage, however by not receiving the formal judgement until 8pm Tuesday after the decision was handed down on Monday evening, time is getting away from us in what was already a short preparation,” QRU Chairman Rod McCall said.

“Under the current SANZAR protocols if we were to launch an appeal we would lose at least a further day of preparation with (coach) Ewen (McKenzie) and Quade who would both be required to fly to Sydney for another hearing.

“However we are cognisant of the need to support our player if we feel he has been treated harshly and in our opinion we still strongly believe the tackle did not warrant suspension.

“After taking the advice of legal representatives, the QRU first intends to discuss the matter further with SANZAR before making a decision whether to launch an appeal within the allowed 48-hour period.”

Cooper is risking a three-week ban if he appeals and loses.

    @Heavens Game(Heavens Game)-596: HG

    SARS figures are factual.

It doesn’t say that there are only 500 000 taxpayers you fool,

What they said was that 500 000 people earned a taxable income of more than R180 000 p.a.

    Got it??

So let me dumb this down for you:

    Number of taxpayers = beeeeg,

Number of taxpayers earning more than R180 000 p.a. (these figures are at least 8 years old) = smaaaaall.

As for what % of the total tax collection this 500 000 encompasses, I do not know.

You can be sure though that those numbers are not 500 000 each earning R180 000 p.a. like you were working with.

You know that, but where you look the biggest fool is by thinking that everyone on this site buys your argument and doesn’t see the obvious failing in logic.

Sometimes I think that arguing with you is like trying to reason with ET.

vat more than income tax contribute more to the SA budget.Tax experts argue that people who pay vat,and basically include all of us,make a large contribution to the government’s budget. This probably gonna shatter Stormersboy’s theory that he and his magnificent 180thousand club are funding the South African welfare budget.

The fate of whole strata of the population and sometimes of whole countries can be decided by the “solipsistic” speculative dance of Capital, which pursues its goal of profitability in a blessed indifference to how its movement will affect social reality.

Therein resides the fundamental systemic violence of capitalism, much more uncanny than the direct pre-capitalist socio-ideological violence:

This violence is no longer attributable to concrete individuals and their “evil” intentions, but is purely “objective”, systemic, anonymous.

    Just some food for thought.

The Public Investment Corp (PIC) is the pension fund for government workers.

I’m told that they are the largest holders of JSE listed stock in SA. I was given a number of between 10 and 15% of the total JSE capitalization is held by the PIC.

So civil service workers collectively hold over 10% of the JSE?

And no wealth is being transferred?

This is not done cos the pink chit or pink champs tastes good but for about 2 hrs of fun and unwinding, friends toodle of home, bath, bed, dinner and tv…………good times…….life is good.
