Lambie back, new midfield for Sharks

Lambie back, new midfield for Sharks

Sharks coach John Plumtree has made surprise selections in midfield for their Super Rugby final against the Chiefs, pairing rookie Paul Jordaan and JP Pietersen.

Pat Lambie returns from an ankle injury, but the real surprise is the centre pair. Jordaan, 20, has been deployed as an outside centre thus far, but shifts to No 12 in Tim Whitehead’s absence and is pitted against Sonny Bill Williams. There have been reservations about Meyer Bosman’s defence and Jordaan’s inclusion ahead of him was probably made with that in mind.

Pietersen was used at 13 early in the season in what was widely considered a failed experiment. He filled in there again last week against the Stormers, but he was expected to return to wing, where he has excelled in recent weeks.

Sharks – 15 Pat Lambie, 14 Louis Ludik, 13 JP Pietersen, 12 Paul Jordaan, 11 Lwazi Mvovo, 10 Frederic Michalak, 9 Charl McLeod, 8 Ryan Kankowski, 7 Marcell Coetzee, 6 Keegan Daniel (c), 5 Anton Bresler, 4 Willem Alberts, 3 Jannie du Plessis, 2 Bismarck du Plessis, 1 Tendai Mtawarira.
Subs: 16 Craig Burden, 17 Wiehahn Herbst, 18 Steven Sykes, 19 Jean Deysel, 20 Jacques Botes, 21 Meyer Bosman, 22 Riaan Viljoen.

Risky Dragon but it might pay off

Pity about Viljoen missing out. His big boot would have been useful with drop goals and long range penalties.

good luck paul, you’re going to need it!

defending your channel against school boys @ grey is different to taking on a behemoth like sbw…sterkte laaitie!

The line up will probably change with Lambie going to 12, Ludik to 15, and Jordaan to 13 and JPP to 14…. everyone shifting one place in essence…
    Chiefs by 20..

It needs only one injury for these doubtful players either almbie or Paul and then they will have to use the “great I can taclke myself” Meyer Bosman..

jordaan has gas man sheesh, he made digby look like a statue.

i just hope the sharks dont take the journos advice and try to build an eerly lead by playing a bit looser.

the chiefs are a team that can punish mistakes through that type of play.

the sharks must look to build an innings and hope that replacements like botes and deysel can sustain the momentum with fresh legs but plums subs vs the stormers were near perfect imo and show he is well aware of all that i am saying.

    go sharks (quiet one)

interesting how quiet it is here.

it seems like a lot of people who were furiously painting the sharks as favourites and the stormers as some poor downtrodden victims of disrespect etc etc have had trouble swallowing the pill they made for themselves.

i do appreciate the stormers fans support for the sharks this weekend though (not you ruckles and provvas, but thanks for the congrats anyways).

@Provvas-4: You province okes are obsessed with ‘tackling’. Enjoy the Currie cup – let real SA fans (including the gracious Stormers fans that are backing the Sharks) support the Sharks cause and, if nothing else, hope for a win.

It’s taken a Kiwi coach to make a bold move for an SA team.
I reckon the Chiefs might be surprised by the Sharks shifting away from the usual SA conservative and predictable decision, which may unsettle them ever so slightly.
    Any pychological advantage will help.
Let’s hope it pays off for the Sharks.
Michalak, Jordaan, Lambie – not the biggest guys, but all super talented.
Will be up to the Sharks forwards to contain the Chiefs strike runners.

Can’t say I agree with Plum’s selection. It’s a helluva challenge for Jordaan. Expect the Chiefs to be very methodical and deliberate in their approach. Goes without saying the 12 channel will be very popular. If Jordaan doesn’t manage to make effective, ball-killing tackles, the chiefs will look to play the offloading game. Good luck the sharks. Row like crazy

@Transformation-19: I think we all need to reference the rowing fete in all of our comments, so make one up and use it.

The Sharks have really invested well. Michalak, Ludik, Whitehead and Alberts have really stepped up and have come to the party! Am hoping for a great final. Whatever happens, the Sharks have given us another reason to gloat!

My question for the general rugby public…who said JP’s stint@ 13 was a Failure?
    That’s such a strong word!
He wasn’t as potent as@wing but he showed again against the Stormers how versatile he can be and even managed to score.
Outside of FS whose played better than JP@13?

I think Plum is a Brave man, and hope and pray it works out for him. Don’t think moving JPP is bad move as chief were going to mark him as a threat – let’s hope by shifting him they forget about him. As for defending the channel against SBW – Jordaan will have to be stong and brave. To be honest the sharks have no answer for SBW – Wish F Steyn was playing that would have been some contest… Come on the sharks… But what ever happens Glad that the Cruisader or boring one dimension Bulls are nowhere to be seen….

Good team! Go and do it Sharkies, make SA proud.

@rabooby-28: Plumtree IS a brave man. And Fortune favours the Brave :-)

Watching the Chiefs / Crusaders game on the weekend, I noticed how many of SBW’s best runs was not from inside centre, but from broken play situations. He is brought in as first or second receiver off rucks and if he gets a line-break it is pretty much it.

Do not think Jordaan will face too many situations where he will be the only one to have to tackle SBW.

By the way, the guy I would watch most of all is Cruden. His runs on Saturday were magic.

    @ Bokfan – I really hope so.
