Kolisi, Cilliers bolters for Boks

Stormers flank Siya Kolisi and Lions tighthead Pat Cilliers have been included in the Springboks’ 30-man squad for the two Tests against Argentina.

The Boks will start their Rugby Championship campaign with two matches against the Pumas, the first in Cape Town on 18 August and the second in Mendoza on 25 August.

Bok coach Heyneke Meyer named a 30-man squad on Saturday, but confirmed that this group will be trimmed to 26 ahead of the Test in Mendoza. Meyer added that the squad could change ahead of the more demanding Tests against Australia and New Zealand, and that players who are currently injured may come into contention for those matches.

Kolisi formed part of the larger training group when the Boks played England in June, although he wasn’t considered for selection. Meyer does, however, believe that the powerful loose forward has what it takes to be a Bok, and it could be that Kolisi gets his first Test cap against Argentina.

The Boks are short on loose forwards at present. Schalk Burger and Duane Vermeulen are expected to make their returns to the rugby field in the Currie Cup this month, and depending on how they fare in terms of match fitness, they may be included in the Bok squad that travels to Australasia.

Meyer will also hope that versatile prop Coenie Oosthuizen gets some game time in the domestic competition. The Cheetahs tighthead injured his neck in the first Test against England, but should be back on the field in the next few weeks.

In the meantime, Cilliers will play understudy to Jannie du Plessis. Werner Kruger played in the series against England but hasn’t been recalled for the Tests against Argentina.

No 8 Ryan Kankowski and centre Wynand Olivier are the other notable omissions. Both players will be taking up club contracts in Japan and so won’t be available for the Rugby Championship.

Bjorn Basson was injured in the Super Rugby play-off match between the Bulls and Crusaders three weeks ago. Basson was forced to undergo emergency surgery on a damaged intestine. He only returned to Pretoria recently, and isn’t expected to be back for at least another three weeks.

Other injured Springboks not considered for selection were Juan Smith, Heinrich Brüssow, and Bandise Maku, while uncapped players such as Jaco Taute, Johan Goosen and Vermeulen would have been in the mix if not for their respective ailments.

‘All of these injured players, as well as other players we have identified, could be considered for selection at a later stage in the competition depending on their recovery and the needs of the squad,’ said Meyer.

One player who will be making a long-awaited return from injury is Andries Bekker. The tall No 5 has played regularly for the Stormers in the past two seasons, but has missed every Test in 2011 and 2012 because of injury.

He is likely to replace Juandre Kruger at No 5 in that first Test against Argentina, and it would mark his first international appearance since 17 July 2010.

‘It is important for us to build continuity in our squad, which is why we did not make too many changes,’ said Meyer.

‘Andries was always in the selection frame, but got injured shortly before England arrived and was not available. It’s good to have him back.

‘Pat and Siya were also part of our thinking earlier in the season and have forced their way into the squad with consistently good performances in Super Rugby.’

The Bok squad will get together on Sunday in Cape Town and commence training on Monday.

The Bok players who were involved in Saturday’s Super Rugby final in Hamilton will link up with national squad later in the week.

Valery Borzov USSR and some Greek sprinters ran way under 10 secs Roussows 10.06 must be about a few thousand places behind on all time list

Will they go 1,2? Or better still 1,2,3 or best yet 1,2,3 with a WR time?

Blake got worst start of the 4 but came through for silver

Bolt just smoked them for 9.63 the MAN pulls it OUT on the Big Occasions

    9.63 Bolt
    9.75 Blake
    9.79 Gatlin

And G’ay Martina and Baily all in 9.80′s make that the fastest men’s 100 final of all time

Yip in yesterday heats Baily looked most conditioned but Bolt and Blake flying under the radar fooling us all.

Gatlin went out hard with best start but Bolt took him out and Blake came through from a poor start.

Meyer has some excellent players at his disposal with some more experience to come off the injury list, now he needs to adjust his tactical appreciation of what he deems the correct strategical approach especially with his loose forward trio and halfback/first five combination.
I would be going for more speed in the loosies who offer better handling skills, therefore Daniel at eight,Alberts on the blindside with Coetsee/Kolisi on the open.
As for nine and ten, would persevere with Hougaard and move Lambie to ten who I believe is good enough to get amongst the opposition defensive line and be able to slip passes and has a good tactical awareness when to run or drop the ball in behind from different types of kicks (grubber, chips or bombs).
I still think Potgeiter is no good and the doctor at prop is too prone to errors.

Jamaican Sprinting is the most dramatic sporting fairy tale achievement of all time. Girls getting Gold and Bronze and the guys go one better for Gold and Silver pumping Gatlin And G’ay into next best status. I think Baily hurt himself in heats he was strapped up for final and didn’t run as fast as yesterday.

Bolt got a good start Martina, G’ay and Powell got best reaction times

9.63 I think is second fastest 100 of all time behind his 9.58

    That was some sprinting there

    1. Usain Bolt - react 0.165 - 9.63 – New Olympic record beating Beijing time
    2. Yohan Blake - 0.179 - 9.75
    3. Justin Gatlin – 0.178 - 9.79
    4. Tyson *** - 0.145 - 9.80
    5. Ryan Bailey - 0.176 - 9.88
    6. Churandy Martina - 0.139 - 9.94
    7. Richard Thompson - 0.16 - 9.98
    8. Asafa Powell – 0.155 - 11.99

Powell only runner over 10 secs and he pulled up when out the medals

    Fastest men’s 100 ever. !!

@fitz1ella-285: yeah it was a dodgy first couple of days but they’ve hit their straps and look to be on course for a best ever finish, fingers crossed the russians don’t start nailing golds in wrestling etc, they hit 3rd in Beijing.

Farah’s final kick was superb, perhaps it’s my ignorance of the sport but I was surprised to see a white american finish second.

Been a good games for your SA team too, much better than their Beijing effort. Bert has been a star :)

@fitz1ella-435: did not like to see the drugs cheat Gatlin score 3rd, Tyson *** would have been a more worthy recipient. Would not have cheered for Chambers either.

@Te Rangatira-427: Hougaard is one of SA’s problems, I’m not exaggerating when I say they would be better with Heini Adams in there. Ruan Pienaar should start. Not sure about flyhalf as there do not appear to be many options but Steyn is too one-dimensional. Lambie worth a go maybe as you say. If Goosen is back an in-form he would be perfect although the opener will probably come too early for him.
