Schalk’s season is over
6 Aug 2012
Allister Coetzee says Schalk Burger is unlikely to play again this year as his injured knee has not responded well to treatment.
Burger has not played since the Stormers’ opening Super Rugby match against the Hurricanes.
‘Schalk is still out completely,’ Western Province coach Allister Coetzee told rugby365. ‘He had to stop the rehab completely because he wasn’t going any further so he saw a specialist last week and we are just waiting for the report on that.’
Coetzee added that while further surgery could solve the problem, he didn’t expect to be able to select the Bok flanker again this year.

Sad, hope this is not the end of his career. I think he will go down as one of the greats of South Africa rugby.

His career is Probably shot.

Good news is Duane Vermeulen started training again today, says he’s got no trouble from the knee, just his fitness needs work.

Who will the Boks now select to fulfill the role of 3rd-gouger ?

Big blow this. I hope he recovers fully and comes back with a big bang. This might of added another year or 2 to his playing career.

great pity…
but the best long-term solution for schalk and the stormers…
complete rest and gradual recovery to full fitness and contact in time for the start of the next super 15 campaign…

I don’t think Schalk’s coming back.

Have to agree Gunther…..Schalk Burger is a Rugby Great.

@WP Till I Die-15: He will. They will. Both him and Juan have been told to consider retirement, but neither wants to.
Saw Juan a while ago. He looks good. He actually looks very fit. But he refuses to throw in the towel.
Unfortunately the same goes for Coenie. Most doctors think he shouldn’t play again, but I doubt he’ll take that seriously.

The decision the mind makes and the decision the body makes are usually very different. The body usually wins the battle though. Schalk and Juan are cut from the same cloth. (I wish we had a few hundred meters more of this cloth left in SA, but it seems we only have tons of the fuschia crimpofuckingline rubbish Spies was cut from)
Their minds will be willing, but their bodies…..(Age is a bummer)
Spies on the other hand, will probably play injury free until he is 40 and will still be the Bok 8.

he certainly lived his rugby life to the fullest
and for that
i respect him

@the artist formerly known as gunther-23:
TheTackler is just shitting bricks every time he sees Eben Etzebeth play, it reminds him of the hidings he used to get in Ruyterwacht from Cliffie and Skattie.
Mental scarring of note.

@WP Till I Die-26:
maybe it would be good to organise a truth and reconciliation moment between them?
have cliffie sit down with tackler and together talk through the ‘sins of the past’.
7 Aug 2012, 09:47 am
@wait for it, wait for it…-27:
Cliffie will definitely help TheTackler with his insomnia problem.
7 Aug 2012, 11:30 am
Schalk should go see Bill Knowles in the US, he’s a world renowned knee reconstruction specialist who helped Jonny Wilkinson, Tiger Woods and Mario Balotelli amongst others to recover from serious knee injuries.

Sad to hear about Schalk, absolute Springbok legend. I know he will be back, the okes got a massive heart. For me will go down as one of the greatest ever.
Get well soon Schalkie!
