Bulls coaching role for Matfield?
7 Aug 2012
Reports indicate that Victor Matfield could soon join the Bulls’ coaching staff full-time.
Matfield has been consulting with the Bulls throughout Super Rugby and Beeld writes the permanent appointment of the former Springbok lock will be high on the agenda when the board of directors of the Blue Bulls Company meet on Tuesday.
The Bulls lost director of rugby Heyneke Meyer to the Springboks, as well as defence coach John McFarland, backs coach Ricardo Loubscher, conditioning coach Basil Carzis and forwards coach Johann van Graan, whom Matfield is set to replace.
Matfield, who currently works as a commentator for SuperSport, has always expressed his desire to get into coaching post-retirement. He is also expected to be roped in by the Springboks at some stage as a consultant, with Meyer a great admirer of his lineout work in particular.

@wait for it, wait for it…-3: Juandre and the new kid must be rubbing their hands in anticipation. Good move by the Loftus boytjies

Wow – I’m not sure anyone saw this move coming fro Big Vic.
And to coach the Bulls? That’s left field!

“It is going to be a tough game, especially as Griquas have been together now for seven months and get players like Justin Downey and Willie le Roux back from the Cheetahs. They’ve also acquired two former Bulls in Stefan Watermeyer and JP Nel in the midfield, and they have the confidence, having beaten us at Loftus before. It is going to be difficult, but we know what is waiting for us.”
I thought the Cheetahs signed Willie Le Roux. Griquas will be tough to beat this year. They might even make the play-offs.

Good.
Let’s get him away from the telly as soon as possible.
You can get hammered during a game when you take a sip everytime he says “ja”, or two sips when he starts a sentence with “ja”.
He will offer far more value in a coaching role.

Matfield could even give some valuable input on the Bulls backline play – whatever just get him off the TV…

I really don’t understand why some people see you as an objective contributor to this site.
I struggle to recall anything positive you ever have to say about anything Bulls related. Be it their players, gameplan or coaches.
7 Aug 2012, 14:40 pm
@Tacitus-16: In short, I really don’t care what you think of me.
Re the Bulls – I have a lot of positives to say about them, and they are in fact one fo my favourite teams. Maybe that is why I am so critical about them.
However, I have a lot of reservations about their archaic gameplan that has siphoned to the Bok systems over time, and the fact that our coaches continue to have an unequivocal belief in its efficacy, despite the facts that are there for everyone else to see.
I also have views on their stockpiling initiatives, which you are aware of and which I am sure you don’t give a damn about.

@willievz-17:
I thought you said “In short?”
Stop over promising and under delivering.
7 Aug 2012, 14:46 pm
hehehe
oh snap!
ladies! please!

@Tacitus-18: “Stop over promising and under delivering.”
Sounds exactly like the Bulls’ gameplan.
7 Aug 2012, 14:53 pm
@willievz-20: One that won them three S14 titles. Kom nou Willie jy is mos nou nie so blerrie stupid nie.
7 Aug 2012, 14:56 pm
@KWAGGA ROBERTSE-21: Onder ander reels en interpretasies, Kwagga.
When faced with, say, a 2-man overlap, they don’t see it as a passing opportunity, but seeing 2 additional chasers.
We don’t have any confidence with ball in hand, and this is crucial for long-term success.
3 titles pale in comparison with the 7 the Crusaders won.

@willievz-14: My friends and I call him Captain Obvious.
@Tacitus-16: You’re as sensitive as most football fans.
The guy makes a comment on Vic which almost everyone agrees with and you snap at him.
I’ve never heard you say a single good things about the Stormers or the Cape for that matter, only consistent insults.
7 Aug 2012, 17:16 pm
My friends and I call him Captain Obvious.
Those long winter evenings must just fly by.
8 Aug 2012, 04:26 am
Vic went through a phase where he turned up a lot at second receiver in the backline. He can haul out those tapes in the video sessions. In fact the Bulls still use a VHS machine
8 Aug 2012, 09:46 am
#22 Willievz Who cares how many titles the crusadsers have won(unless you are a crusaders fan) the bulls have won 3 titles which is a lot more than the rest of the sa teams have won.
8 Aug 2012, 09:49 am
This is a good move for matfield and the bulls as he was the 2nd best lock ever to play for the boks as Frik du Preez was voted the No1 lock ever to play for the boks and naturally he was a bull.
8 Aug 2012, 10:15 am
matfield is a kak commentator, no amount of blou bulle history recalling will change that…
willie, i’ll try that drinking game this weekend
8 Aug 2012, 11:12 am
Ludicrous (for now), Matfield, Spencer and Nienaber – that would be a very good, young coaching team
8 Aug 2012, 11:47 am
@blueboy-26:
The point here is that New Zealand is a more successful rugby nation than South Africa.
The Bulls’ gameplan might have delivered results in the past, for both them and the Boks, but we need to adapt when required.
Tell me, when did the Boks look most impressive during the England series? What type of rugby did they play during that half?
8 Aug 2012, 11:53 am
Is Matfield worst than Breyton / Toks / Werner Swanepoel / Naas / Stransky / John v Rensburg? In my opinion Gavin Cowley / Skinstadt (English) and Kobus Wiese / Koortsen (Afrikaans) are the best. Ashwin Willemse talks a lot of sense.
Have your say
