Deysel leads new-look Sharks

The Sharks have made 14 changes to the side that started in the Super Rugby final for their Currie Cup opener against WP in Cape Town.

With most of the Sharks’ first-choice players training with the Springboks or being rested following their trip from Hamilton, a youthful side has been selected for the team’s clash at Newlands.

Deysel will captain the Durban union, who will bank on the likes of wing Odwa Ndungane, centre Meyer Bosman, flank Jacques Botes and hooker Craig Burden for experience. Paul Jordaan, who is the only survivour from the run-on side that played in the Super Rugby final, will start at outside centre.

Sharks – 15 Gouws Prinsloo, 14 Odwa Ndungane, 13 Paul Jordaan, 12 Meyer Bosman, 11 Sbura Sithole, 10 Riaan Viljoen, 9 Cobus Reinach, 8 Tera Mtembu, 7 Jean Deysel (c), 6 Jacques Botes, 5 Jandre Marais, 4 Steven Sykes, 3 Wiehahn Herbst, 2 Craig Burden, 1 Dale Chadwick.
Subs: 16 Monde Hadebe, 17 Julian Redelinghuys, 18 Peet Marais, 19 Francois Kleinhans, 20 Conrad Hoffmann, 21 Marius Joubert, 22 Rosko Specman.

Not a bad side at all. Interesting to see how the new boys/youngsters combine with those old heads. I’d love to see this 2nd string give the WeePees second string another hiding !!

    @yank-1:

Yes, some exciting players coming through the Sharks ranks.
Should be a very competitive squad come S15 2013.

    1. Mtawarira, [need a good signing for depth here - perhaps Carstens or Cilliers can be lured back?]
    2. Du Plessis, Burden
    3. Du Plessis, Herbst
    4. Sykes, Marais
    5. Bresler, Steph Du Toit
    6. Daniel, Botes
    7. Alberts, Deysel
    8. Kankowski, Mthembu
    9. McLeod, Reinach
    10. Lambie, Viljoen
    11. Mvovo, Sithole
    12. Steyn, Bosman
    13. Whitehead, Jordaan
    14. Pieterson, Ndungane
    15. Ludik, Prinsloo

    Additional depth:

    1. Chadwick
    2. Redelinghuys
    3. Cooper
    4. Hadebe
    5. Marais
    6. Kleynhans
    7. Hoffman
    8. Zelinga
    9. Williams
    10. Mjekevu

Sharks would do well to bring back the likes of Carstens, Cilliers and Pienaar into their ranks.

Yeesh – left out Marcell Coetzee.
But his inclusion only strengthens my point.
    Imagine:

    1. Mtawarira 2. Du Plessis 3. Du Plessis 4. Alberts 5. Bresler 6. Daniel 7. Coetzee 8. Kankowski 9. Pienaar 10. Lambie 11. Mvovo 12. Steyn 13. Whitehead 14. Pieterson 15. Ludik

    16. Burden 17. Cilliers 18. Sykes or Steph Du Toit 19. Deysel or Botes 20. McLeod 21. Viljoen 22. Jordaan

    That’s one helluva side.

@puff-3: Sure is, i would have Jordaan starting over Tim though, the reason is his speed and running off the ball, i reckon he and Steyn could make one heck of a combo,

Isn’t Coetzee with the Boks ?

Good to see Deysel getting the captaincy for the CC.

    Good luck Sharks.

Would have played Jordaan 12 Mjekevu 13

    Bosman at 10

@mshiniwami-8: Who drops out? Prinsloo / Viljoen / Ndungane?

I agree Mjekevu should be in the mix, but he can take Joubert’s place on the bench as he is a spent force – a total waste of money by the Sharks. If he performs, then another overated performer, Bosman, can be sidelined.

Prinsloo is young and has promise. Ndungane is experienced and despite a lack of pace, he’s still a bl00dy good wing.
