Klofies edge Monnas
11 Aug 2012
GARETH DUNCAN watched Waterkloof record a 21-19 victory over Monument in Pretoria.
Monnas have enjoyed more success in this annual interschool derby in recent years, but Klofies managed to hold on for a close win over their Krugersdorp-based rivals.
Waterkloof flyhalf Kobus Marias’ three penalties in the second half were the match-winning scores as it saw the hosts break down a 19-12 deficit and surge to victory. It was an impressive comeback from the hosts, especially after Monument dominated from the outset.
Monnas boasted the bigger pack, and this saw them dominate the collisions in the first quarter. They capitalised on this ascendancy as wing Cisko du Toit and inside centre Rigard Viljoen crossed the chalk. Both tries came from Waterkloof errors in their own red zone.
However, Klofies managed to draw level before the break as wing Francois de Kock finished off an 80m counter-attack, while tighthead prop Johan van Wyk powered over from the close range. The score read 12-12 at half-time.
In the second half, Monnas scored early with flank Dylan Vlok sniping the fringes. But Waterkloof gained control of the game with a clever tactical kicking game thereafter, giving Marias the platform to punish the visitors’ ill-discipline and to seal the triumph.
