Sharks sink WP

Sharks sink WP

GARETH DUNCAN watched the Sharks sneak in for a 25-23 win over WP at a wet Newlands on Saturday.

A Riaan Viljoen drop goal was enough give the Durban a winning start to their Currie Cup campaign. It was an impressive comeback as they broke down a 13-3 half-time deficit to claim the victory. WP, who were composed in the first half, delivered a poor defensive showing in the second stanza, which cost them the game.

With heavy rain creating wet conditions at Newlands, Province’s accurate tactical kicking game saw them hold the ascendancy in the opening 40. They forced play into the Sharks’ territory and Joe Pietersen punished the visitors from the kicking tee. He slotted two three-pointers before WP scored the first try of the match.

With another penalty awarded to the home side in a kickable area, captain Deon Fourie decided to opt for touch. The gamble paid off as a strong rolling maul saw Tiaan Liebenberg dive over. Pietersen added the extras.

The Sharks only managed three points before the break as Meyer Bosman slotted a penalty shortly before half-time.

But then came the comeback.

Within four minutes in the second half, the Sharks found themselves 15-13 ahead thanks to WP’s poor composure under the high ball and poor tackling.

First, Paul Jordaan showed great pace to finish off a smart attack. Viljoen’s chip was gathered by Bosman, who offloaded to the Baby Bok centre to score. Then from the resulting kick-off, Burden gathered the ball and sped to the whitewash.

Pietersen managed to regain the lead for WP with his third penalty, but it wasn’t long before Burden completed his brace. Again from the kick-off, WP failed to control possession and the fiery hooker enjoyed an easy run to the tryline. Bosman added the extras to make it 22-16.

However, the Sharks were dealt a blow when Jacques Botes was yellow-carded for a trip on Gary van Aswegen in the 67th minute.

Province capitalised on their one-man advantage, scoring a try via another strong driving maul. This time, Fourie emerged from the pile of bodies with the ball. Pietersen converted the extras for a slender advantage.

With 10 minutes to go, WP looked like they had enough to close out the game, before Viljoen slotted a drop goal to put the visitors ahead yet again. It proved to be a telling blow as WP failed to score any more points at the death, with Pietersen missing his first kick of the match in the 77th minute when he pulled his fourth penalty attempt.

The rot of the refs and the tinkering law “makers” or interpreters are dragging rugby into the depths of nothing more than exhibition as opposed to fair contest…

This has been made stark by the Olympic Games.

@cane-293: No. I have read a few saying that, but doubt very much that was the case. Her tactics were all wrong. She lay for far too long at the back and then pushed from there in the 2nd lap. By that time the Russian girl was way too far for her to catch. She caught the rest of the field from there expect the Russian girl. Now imagine if she was running closer the the front group? With her devastating kick she would have blown that field away. Doubt any would have stayed with her.

Read during the week that she likes to run straight into the lead and run from there, but her coach thought otherwise and wanted her to lay back and wait for the time to kick. Think she layed just too far back. Doubt her coach wanted her to lay right at the back though. Should have stayed with the middle bunch. From there she she would have been closer to the front runners to kick on to win from the 2nd lap. She lost the gold by allowing herself to sit too long at the back. Left her too much to do from there. She will learn from this though.

First look at this site since the game last nite so I havent seen all the other posts but …….
I think I saw the 2012 Currie Cup champs play last nite…and it wasn’t WP !! To think that the Sharks were without 12 first choices last nite on international or other duty (that # includes Michalak and Kankowski) plus they still have stars like Ludik, Bresler, Whitehead and McLeod to call on…..well, that certainly tells a story. Conversely, WP have, what, 5 or 6 players who will come back after international duty……
Sorry to say that Pieterson and Aplon were shown up for what they are…..good provincial players, no more. For the Sharks, absolute stars for the future are Jordaan and Reinach – in fact Jordaan and Whitehead should be in the SA squad now instead of some of the cart horses we continue to pick !! And whilst WP obviously missed Grant, I was very impressed by Francis (almost a journeyman by now ), Brache and Armand.
Somebody is doing a great job at the Sharks (Plumtree, Straueli, Bashford and Reece-Edwards) whilst all we hear about in the Press is Coetzee. Well, maybe it’s time somebody told him that you have to score tries to win at rugby….Maybe when the crowds get tired of backing a trophy-less team, the sponsors will have something to say. :-)
I admit – I’m a Sharks fan and I LOVE tweeking the WP tail ……

@wait for it, wait for it…-310: track and field athletes, gymnasts, swimmers, even the rowers and weight lifters, put far more effort and dedication into winning an Olympics gold than any rugby player ever has to win any competition.. and doubtfully ever will. So you are wrong, running in a straight line or round the track at absolute utmost effort and exertion to ones utmost degree of breaking point is not ‘easy’ its WAY more difficult than cruising through 80 minutes on a rugby field.. WAY more strenuous and demanding, in every aspect of its effort and endeavor.

@cane-321: She has the speed she could have kept up. Just look how fast she picks up in the next 400m. I read this was her coaches tactic. Well not for her to sit last in the first 400m. But to sit around the middle then make her kick from there. She will learn from this. Also probably the next Olympics she should also look at running the 1500m. That could be her best distance to run. Well I think it could be.

  • 327.sharks_lover: Reply to this comment

@cane-321: The thing is she planned with or without her coach to race a certain way, problem is you cant just stick to that as you have to counteract what the rest of the field is doing,

She admitted this, I mean after about 550 meters she was still on her planned tactic, and had to give it one heck of a charge at the end, which of cause by then was too late for gold,

Good luck the the Russian gal who followed the field and what was happening in front of her

  • 329.Puma: Reply to this comment

@cane-321: To be honest Cane. She looked like she had so much gas left after that race and looked like she could have run another 400m. She needs to start a bit faster. Then like I said think she should now look to run the 1500m as that could be her best distance to run in the future.

  • 330.Puma: Reply to this comment

@sharks_lover-327: Exactly. She should have run what was in-front of her so to speak. Should have kept up with the others in the first lap. I have no doubt if she had done that she would have won gold. She finished stronger than any of the others. But left it too late to catch the Russian girl. Had she been sitting around the middle mark at the bell she would have gone with the leaders and beat them all. She will learn though not to just let the field get so far ahead at the start. Just too tough then to bring them all back.

look, i dont agree with you regarding rugby skop but to tell you the truth i dont know much about the sports involved in the olympics and what it takes to excell.

its stupid of me to say this, but i go on instinct and by looking at it on the screen. i honestly had no idea half the number of sports i’ve seen were even olympic sports, perhaps even more.
i dont think i’ll ever be a fan and have certainly not been converted.

all i take away with me is a fondness for syncronised swimming (the womens event of course, i would not enjoy watching mens syncronised swimming).

17 odd K’s into the run.

    Kenyan in front.
A pack of 10 or so, 22 seconds back.

Over weight or muscular?? not sure, even with that though she could have won gold

  • 335.Robzim: Reply to this comment

Caster’s tactics were bizarre to put it mildly- she gave herself no chance whatsoever to win by hanging back so far and for so long- i doubt whether her coach who was one of the greatest 800 m runners ever (Maria Mutola) would have told her to run like that.

Imo she basically give the gold medal to the russian – something was not right there- even a primary school runner should not make such a basic mistake.

@Robzim-335: It was a terrible mistake by her Rob. As I watched her in the first 400m thought she had totally blown it even to pick up a medal. Just shows the class of runner she is by picking it up and going pas the rest to get the Silver.

I read that Maria wanted Caster to PACE herself and not run from the front like she does. I doubt she wanted her to sit right at the back of the field for the first 400m though. That was a terrible mistake. Left her way, way too much to do to catch the leader.

The drug tests at the Olympic games conducted by the IOC, not by an Independent Anti Doping Agency, big difference!
    To press the point:
In June this year a chines swimmer was tested positive to EPO at an international meeting by WADA and disqualified, didn’t feature in the Olympic.
Do you believe a littlegirl age of 16 in a totalitarian state can go and use EPO all by herself? she was a part of the Olympic swimming squad btw ;)
