Vermeulen back for WP

Vermeulen back for WP

After a long injury lay-off, No 8 Duane Vermeulen will be back in action for WP when they tackle Griquas in Kimberley on Saturday.

Vermeulen is one of six changes to the Province run-on side that was fielded in the 25-23 defeat to the Sharks last weekend. The hardman, who has been sidelined since April, replaces Canadian international Jebb Sinclair in the loose trio.

Another change up front sees Steven Kitshoff return to the front row in place of Deon Carstens.

In the backline, WP have a new halfback pair in scrumhalf Louis Schreuder and flyhalf Demetri Catrakilis. Ederies Arendese features on the wing, with Gio Aplon switching to fullback in place of the injured Joe Pietersen.

WP – 15 Gio Aplon, 14 Gerhard van den Heever, 13 JP du Plessis, 12 Marcel Brache, 11 Ederies Arendse, 10 Demetri Catrakilis, 9 Louis Schreuder, 8 Duane Vermeulen, 7 Tyrone Holmes, 6 Deon Fourie (c), 5 De Kock Steenkamp, 4 Don Armand, 3 Frans Malherbe, 2 Tiaan Liebenberg, 1 Steven Kitshoff.
Subs: 16 Siyabonga Ntubeni, 17 Brok Harris, 18 Wilhelm van der Sluys, 19 Jebb Sinclair, 20 Nic Groom, 21 Kurt Coleman, 22 Damian de Allende.

    In the good old days,

Skim would have beaten me by 30 seconds plus on that post.

Thank the heavens. A few Currie Cup appearances and then hopefully a Bok call up.

    Ah…Good ol’ ‘Hand Bags’

    Welcome back.

With season ending knee injuries for the past 2 seasons running, whats the bet Brok Harris is now quicker than this fella.

@John Galt-4: Well he is quicker that Grant…..or so he thinks. On the topic of speed , watch the youngster Edries , exciting player , hope he makes the most of his chance !

Neither Spies nor Vermullet is the answer at 8. Spies has all the speed and athleticism but no mongrel, while Vermullet has heaps of mongrel but no speed or silky skills. A best of both worlds combination of the two would be nice, but since that’s not going to happen, I recommend Alberts at 8.

Alberts 8 and kolisi and marcell the flanks

Or kolisi at 8 with alberts and marcell the flanks

@Gazelle-9: And Kanko on the bench, when he’s back from being Big in Japan.

Josh Strauss will probably be the next 8 nearly soon?
He just needs one season without the beard.
He could be the next Wickus v Heerden.
    Belatedly appreciated.
    Alberts a good bet.
But actually Ashley J should be the no. 1 no. 8.

@shooter-12: Nearly soon? I don’t think the Boks can wait that long to replace Spies  In all honestly, I don’t think he is good enough – and he is too accustomed to losing.

    @>^..^< katman-8:

I take your point that neither of Spies nor Vermeulen is the total package but neither is Alberts who is slower than Vermeulen, injury proned, does not seem to have the conditioning to last a game (some people just never get it even if they train hard) and has very limited passing or allround skills. He is a great ball carrier though more suited to no 7 imo (or pehaps as an impact player).

Bottom line is we have no Zinzan or even a Read in this country. Nobody comes even close. The last decent number 8 we had was Teichman or maybe Skinstadt at his best. I was hoping Koster could become the next real deal one but he probably won’t either.

@Robzim-14: No one can be slower than Vermeulen

Demetri and Kurt???. Both fairly useless, with Demetri maginally better as he can at least kick for the posts.

Where is van Aswegen who was on the bench last week to Francis?
Francis btw is even more useless than Demetri or Kurt. AC seems to be losing it.

    Griquas by 3 .

    @capebull-15:

I reckon he would beat Alberts by half a yard over 10 meters.
Over 20 meters it will be no contest as Alberts is too unfit to run so far at “speed”.

@Robzim-14: I very much disagree with you. Alberts has great hands and passing skills – he used to play flyhalf before he got so goddamned big. And I reckon he’d easily beat Vermeulen over 40m.

@Robzim-16: Gary van Aswegan has been told by Alister to play a few club games for maties. They shouldve just started with him, or atleast given him the last 20 mins or so.

Brache shouldnt be the vice captain, he’s been around for the last 3,4 years and isnt able to make it happen in the super 15. JP is exciting and i hope he does well.
Duvies needs a few weeks off, he just lacks that something special, hopefully Louis can make the step up now, a lil simailar to Ruan.

At the start of the year Tim Swiels name was thrown around, why isnt he having a go in the Currie Cup?? Bash is never gonna win us the super 15 so its time to look at other 10′s. He’l b good to keep around as a mentor and play a few games next season, but in the big ones we need a 10 who can dominate play.

Hooker depth another major issue, Deon cant scrum and can’t throw, Tiaans been good but he’s getting on now. Who’s next?? Scarra is tiny amd I dunno if he’s good enough.

Is Damian de Allende that big kid who played wing, centre for UCT during the varsity cup or am I wrong??
I hear Arendse is blitz but again seems to be tiny, Gio,Joe,JdJ. We need speed and size

I think Schreuder and Dimitri are very good choices as halfbacks. Schreuder has more to offer than Duvenhage and I just love Dimitri’s play with his ability to vary his play. At least he can kick drop goals. Good luck to our team. This team has the potential to bring much joy to the Newlands faithful.

@Fleckie-19: JP du Plessis was one of the worst players on the field. He kept tucking the ball under his arm like a winger. Showing the oppposition clearly he is not going to pass so lets just double tackle him. He also got driven back in the tackle a few times. I would of dropped him. Brache atleast seems to have the physical nature to make it in senior rugby and he atleast looks to create something for those outside him.

    JP was poor.

Got to run again. Need to come up with information for Patricia de Lille to use in a speech to counter the service delivery protests. Wish me luck.
