EPRU president Cheeky Watson says the Kings want a three-year Super Rugby guarantee from Saru.

The Kings will play Super Rugby in 2013 but it may only be for one year as the bottom-placed team in the SA conference will have to play a two-match promotion-relegation tie against the Lions.

‘I think it is a ludicrous decision,’ Watson said after Saru’s general council meeting in Cape Town. ‘It doesn’t make sense in rugby, not in business, not in the church. It doesn’t make sense in any sector of society that you are sitting with a scenario that you are in Super Rugby for one year and expected to achieve.’

Watson later told Ballz Radio that the Kings wanted a guaranteed place in Super Rugby for the next three years and would appeal Saru’s decision.

Meanwhile, GLRU president Kevin de Klerk said he was ‘extremely disappointed’ with the Lions’ relegation from Super Rugby.

‘This is a very unfortunate decision, which will result in a team [the Kings] taking part in a competition without needing to qualify on rugby merits. We will take time to consider this decision and then to plan our response that best protects our players, staff, stakeholders and supporters.’

The Lions will hold a press conference on Tuesday to address the matter.

    Bakkies psychology ;do something naughty then remind people you go to church hahaha

    In the church? What holy spirit are you tripping on, Watson? A year is about 365 days more than you deserve. Tell your buddies at the Griffons, Leopards etc you won’t be gone long.

    Cheeky is quite simply really.
    Don’t come last in the S15 but if you do just win your relegation match against these “kak” Lions.

    Cheeky, you didn’t earn promotion, it’s been handed to you on a platter, so how can you now ***** about the ” present” you have been given ?? Put up and shut up !!

    I agree, the Kings is NOT a good business or rugby decision

    Just because the comrades vultures need a new carcass to feed on doesn’t justify it in the real; world

    the complaint is without merit
    promo/relegation will be a yearly occurence until the format is rejigged.
    they will get a shot every year as will the lions.

    For Cheeky it’s got merit, he wants to plant his snout in the money trough and keep it there

    A year or two simply won’t do

    Cheeky is absolutely right.Getting a new franchise in without protection against relegation is simply just crazy.Saru is totally out of sync with other sporting bodies who guaranteed their new franchises against relegation for at least two years.Case in point the Catalan Dragons in rugby league.Rugby League in England expanded the game to France as a total new territory ,but they realised that they simply could not expose the newcomers to relegation after the first season.A franchise like the Kings needs to sort out contracts for new players and might find it difficult to attract quality players with the prospect of only one year in super rugby.It also takes time to develop a new team/ brand and rugby culture.It certainly can’t be done in one year.

    Is Cheeky tacitly accepting that the Kings are destined to finish last of the SA teams in 2013?

    It really is a simple equation Cheeky. Finish higher than another SA team and your precious team get to stay a bit longer….

  • 20.Humphrey: Reply to this comment

    Do the Kings “deserve” to be there in the first place? NO! So accept the lucky break you have achieved and shut the fark up!

  • 21.kaksioek: Reply to this comment

    The Kings will be able to attract the Lions’ best players with the lure of Super Rugby. If they can’t then beat the severely weakened Lions at the end of one year of Super Rugby, then they deserve to be eliminated.

  • 22.kaksioek: Reply to this comment

    All this has ever been about is giving Cheeky a golden handshake. How many black players do you think will play for the Kings in Super Rugby? How many play for them now? The Kings will just be the Lions under a different name – and two different Kiwi coaches.

  • 23.Humphrey: Reply to this comment

    @kaksioek-21: if the Kings are simply going to be the Lions, then whats the point of the Kings? I thought the Kings idea was all about unlocking the talent in the hotbed of black rugby in SA?

  • 24.victoriabok: Reply to this comment

    @kaksioek-22:

    It’s a shame SARU and Cheeky messed it up

    SARU should have entreched the Kings in the CC since 2005 and gave them a few friendlies before the season against the franchises and a few against the Aussie teams as well they would have been ready for inclusion once the current franchise contracts run out

    The Kings could have developed a lot of local (black) players and a black coach as well, like Treu

    Then the team would have had the support of the whole country

  • 25.kaksioek: Reply to this comment

    @Humphrey-23: Bingo: there is no point to the Kings.

  • 26.Humphrey: Reply to this comment

    @kaksioek-25: well the Kings have just made their 1st couple of signings…

    Catrakilis from WP and Deon Van Rensburg from the Lions.

    How does this assist the “transformation” of SA rugby? Which black players are they going to keep out of the team?

  • 27.victoriabok: Reply to this comment

    @Humphrey-26:

    It was never about transformation

    It was about $$$$$ in Cheeky’s pocket

    You’d think a senseless decision would be right at home in a church. Ironic init

    Bye bye lions. 10years of absolute k@k super rugby and putridness has finally ended.Big Welcome to the Kings, they surely need 10 yrs as well to prove themselves?

  • 31.Joe Maher: Reply to this comment

    @Slappes-30:

    For what? Kak as the Lions were, they can at least say they earned their Super Rugby spot way back when. The Kings earned fokkal, never have, never will.

    And those who don’t earn it almost always end up seeing their arses. Enjoy your lone year in Super Rugby, Slappes.

    And as for Cheeky Watson, the only ludicrous decision is giving his rabble mob a Super Rugby spot on a platter. Idiot.

    Oh dear…problems in the Republic AGAIN….is there any other scenario out of SA….NOPE…you have a circus masquerading as a Government, you have a Rugby Union that is not just dysfunctional but has no vision let alone kahonees (balls), so next years S15 will have a whipping boy of a Team called the Southern Kings…what a joke, what a disgrace that SA brings to the SH competition….and to XV take a jump SA doesnt subsidise anyone but a Team that has a one year contract to perform and guess what…they will be weighed, measured and found wanting…just like your SARFU and Government … go the Australiasians….

  • 33.JohnPierre: Reply to this comment

    Actually I would just wish SA would go North and play with the Northerners…kind fits your style of play…leave the good rugby to NZ and Aus Teams …oh the Argies…but you guys are just moaners and boy how you turn on your own…WOW…it is mind blowing..

  • 34.bryce_in_oz: Reply to this comment

    @JohnPierre-33:

    You’re correct about the mess it’s beyond a joke and SANZAR should be setting them straight… you’re incorrect about taking the world’s 3rd best team from the toughest provincial competition in the world… all of NZAR would be instantly fiscally crippled and they’d kiss their provincial players and leagues good-bye…

    But then again from your comments… no offence mate… you don’t sound like a numerical genius…

  • 35.Joe Maher: Reply to this comment

    The record-books will be rewritten as the Southern Kinks get utterly smoked by 50 point and upward margins, week after cringeworthy week. It’ll make all of SA rugby as much of a global laughing stock as Equatorial Guinean swimming.

    What good does it do to import players from the Lions. Wake up Kings. If they want to go forward, why import the players from the worst SR team ?
    By the way, the Eastern Cape is not only made up of players of other colours !
