KeoTV: Call for the king
17 Aug 2012
MARK KEOHANE and RYAN VREDE don’t believe Francois Hougaard is the answer as a starting scrumhalf. That man is in Japan and will still play a crucial role with the Springboks.

Duane Vermeulen is out of the June Tests. Stormers strong man Duane Vermeulen returned home from the Stormers Super Rugby tour because of injury and conservatively won't play again until July. It could be that he is out for the remainder of the Super Rugby season as well because of knee ligament damage. Stormers loose-forward Rynhardt Elstadt is also out for at least six weeks as the Cape-based franchise's season went from bad to worse in Sydney. Vermeulen, Meyer's first choice No 8, will be nursed back to action for the Rugby Championship in August. His injury means a likely Bok start ... Read Article20 May 2013
GREGOR PAUL, in the Herald on Sunday, writes world rugby will get its integrated season after the 2015 World Cup and Super Rugby won't break to accommodate an international window. Super Rugby will shift to a March start and won't break for test matches, the June window will be shifted to July and all players will have a 14 to 16-week off-season. Other innovative plans are being discussed, such as building a world series of tests in years that fall between the World Cup and British Lions tours. The revolution that All Black coach Steve Hansen called for last week is coming. The players ... Read Article25 Apr 2013
Jan Serfontein, the player of last year's under 20 World Championship, will head the baby Boks defence in France. Serfontein and Kings wing Sergeal Petersen are two Super Rugby regulars to make Dawie Theron's squad and brilliant flyhalf Handre Pollard is another to play in a second successive tournament. Theron's squad lost a three-match series 2-1 to Argentina in Argentina. Serfontein, Petersen and Western Province's Cheslin Kolbe did not play in those matches. Bulls loose forward Ruan Steenkamp is captain. Serfontein and Pollard are the only two squad members from last year's ... Read Article14 May 2013
All Blacks coach Steve Hansen has selected several uncapped Blues players in his training group. Hansen confirmed 38 names and this included many from the potent Blues backline. The Highlanders, despite only winning one match in this year's Super Rugby competition, have six players in the group. An obvious area of weakness is at hooker where Hansen has selected veterans Andrew Hore and Keven Mealamu and Canes Dane Coles. Options are limited and it certainly is a concern for New Zealanders. No overseas-based players were considered, as it is NZRFU policy. Among the uncapped players ... Read Article15 May 2013
French coach Philipe Saint-Andre has included three South African-born players for the three-Test series against the All Blacks in New Zealand. Racing Metro flank Bernard le Roux and Clermont prop Daniel Kotze join Antonie Claassen in a squad that includes eight new caps. Fijian-born Clermont winger Noa Nakaitaci is among the newcomers. Saint-Andre has rested flyhalf Francois Trinh-Duc, but included Toulon's Frederic Michalak. France play world champions New Zealand on June 8, 15 and 22 in Auckland, Hamilton and New Plymouth respectively. French super club Toulon's foreign dominance ... Read Article5 Mar 2013
MARK KEOHANE writes the Varsity Cup in its first year rocked. Since then it's just another professional tournament. The Varsity Cup may have the innovation of doing a few things differently, but what was supposed to be a celebration of student rugby somehow just seems like another tournament, in which the traditional power houses remain the traditional strengths in the tournament. Much has been made of the Port Elizabeth-based Nelson Mandela University display this season and equally there has been bewilderment at how poor Shimlas have been. But it seems the old one two of Stellenbosch University ... Read Article12 May 2013
Marcus Watson scored in extra time to beat the Blitzbokke in the London World Series Sevens Cup quarter-finals. The teams were level 14-all at full time. Watson's try came four minutes into extra time. England won 19-14. England had the chance to win the match with the last play of the game in normal time. They were awarded a penalty and opted to take a drop kick for goal. It missed. Watson then rounded off a move after England had retained possession for two minutes. South Africa suffered further embarrassment when they lost for a second time in the tournament to the USA and were eliminated ... Read Article8 Jan 2013
Limpopo will play in the Vodacom Cup as a separate side for the first time this year. The region, which is a sub-union of the Blue Bulls Rugby Union, has been granted a place in the tournament in its own rights to help foster rugby in South Africa’s far north. They join the 14 provincial unions as well as the returning Pampas XV from Argentina in the tournament, which kicks off in the second week of March and concludes in mid-May. The Polokwane-based Limpopo team will play in the North Section of the competition, along with the Blue Bulls, Golden Lions, Griffons, Leopards, Pumas, Valke ... Read Article17 Aug 2012

@Heavens Game-100:
hougie is a wing
finish and klaar
17 Aug 2012, 16:04 pm
@Heavens Game-100: Under Meyer, Steyn will always be safe. Hougaard must be allowed to play his natural game. The Boks need to have the balls to take to ball-in-hand assault rugby, show us how good Morne Steyn, Francois Steyn, and JDV are creating and exploiting space.

@mpundulu-102:
spies loses the ball too much in contact,keegan is a better option in any gameplan but esp in a running gameplan where he links with the backs.
17 Aug 2012, 16:13 pm
@Fern-103: No argument there, Spies has been suspicious for a long time, he knows it too! Rugby reporters are petrified to write any truthful assessment of him, I thought Keo would have the constitution to speak loudly of this issue but he’s playing hide and seek with the rest of his motley crue.
17 Aug 2012, 16:17 pm
@mpundulu-102: Steyn’s play has been affected by Hougaard… I actually dont think they are a good partnership even excluding Hougies struggles with quick service and kicking travails.
Anyway, am over and out for now. Time for some vitamin beer.
17 Aug 2012, 16:19 pm
@mpundulu-104:
I have nothing personal against him,but how can you accept a jersey time after time again knowing you are far from the best player in that position.
Has he no self respect and pride in himself?
17 Aug 2012, 16:19 pm
@Heavens Game-105:
Enjoy the wetties.

@Fern-129: hamilton… that was close with carter & his cross kicks
17 Aug 2012, 17:35 pm
@Transformation-131:
frans steyn just looks so aloof when knocking over those long kicks,like it is just run of the mill.
17 Aug 2012, 19:21 pm
@Transformation-131: would not have been close if Owens didn’t keep walking the ABs to the front of the Bok posts for ridiculous non-penalties
@Robzim-52: I don’t think the IBO are one of the most reputable, they’re pretty much on the periphery in terms of major titles.
Unlike SBW, Botha is an actual boxer who was out-pointing Tyson before the KO, there’s no reason why he shouldn’t win, even at 43.
Tommy Gun Oosthuizen is probably SA’s best boxer at present. He’s trying to make a name for himself in the US, it seems SA don’t get behind their boxers in a big way.
17 Aug 2012, 23:16 pm
my word, this is a classic thread…. hahahaha
Fernly – hahahahaha did your big baas HG make you feel better? I have to laugh, the fact you think I am close to a “breakdown”, when all i did was call you out on your initial “lets meet at the Opera bar when I’m in Sydney next” call from a few years ago… remember, you were the one who initially wanted to meet me, and now youre upset because I said I would gladly do that, as I did originally, and you can mention my mum to my face.? LMFAO it just doesnt get better than watching you fall under the protective wing of HG…
I hope HG tucked you in nice and warm and has made you feel all secure, did he regale you with his tales from France, the place he’s been hiding since his team got a hiding? hahahaha
the very fact you need VALIDATION from HG the moment he logs back in is hysterical, really, havent laughed so much in years… thanks for that
@Big Hit-133: good to see the hate for the ABs is still strong in you BH… another wonderful read, seeing your tears still falling after so many years… it must really hurt that probably the greatest English forward in history learnt how to play in lil ole NZ huh?
17 Aug 2012, 23:41 pm
Hougard has had the misfortune of playing with Morne Steyn outside him. He seems to have copped a lot of flack unfairly in my opinion. Put a decent fly half outside him with some attacking threat and you’ll see what a handful the guy really is.
18 Aug 2012, 00:01 am
@HongKongSlong-135:
He hasn’t developed as a no 9, played his formative years on the wing instead of playing Vodacom Cup and the like at no 9
He wouldn’t be a bad Quade Cooper type No 10 either
18 Aug 2012, 00:09 am
these people bemoaning the loss of FdP.. did they even WATCH the last WC.. FdP was one of the chief culprits for our loss..
Him and Burger and top of the list Smit lost the Boks the WC in 2011…
Hougaard, Bismark and Alberts should have started and Boks would have cleaned up Aussie and likely cleaned up AB’s in the semi next.
18 Aug 2012, 00:50 am
@victoriabok-136: I think he’s being made to look average, because The Bulls only want him to play in one way. If Will Genia had to play for the Bulls in their system with Steyn as his half back partner, he’d be looking average as well. The guy has some serious strengths, but is having to play to his weaknesses unfortunately.
18 Aug 2012, 00:57 am
@HongKongSlong-138:
Any scrumhalf must have the ability so kick behind the pack if needed, not the FdP type of kicking game, but just to relive pressure, Genia and Weepu and all others can do it except Hougie
His passing need work too and a lot of times he’s missing when he needs to pick op the ball behind a ruck
The best thing you could do to him is to “demote” him back to the CC team to play scrummie for the rest of the season, and if he still doesn’t shape, make him a wing and allround backline player
18 Aug 2012, 01:06 am
@victoriabok-139: what is his preferred position? surely you want to play a guy in a position he is most comfortable in?
Ive never understood it from any coach, unless its to cover a glaring weakness in the team, but it is a stop gap solution at best… you need to promote someone who has played the position throughout his career, this way they have that instinctual knowing when the situation demands..
the same with Spies at 8, the guy grew up playing wing, and could’ve been a devestating winger in the mould of Lomu, yet he has been moved just because of his size..
NZ do it too, and it is frustrating to see…

@poppa69-134:
Exactly,a few years ago when you were your old self.
Not the current bitter,depressed and angry Pooper.
Fortuantly you are single,have no family or friends in Oz
so they don’t have to suffer the effects of your current condition.
Ek het werklik niks om vir jou tese oor n bier nie.
18 Aug 2012, 07:44 am
@Fern-141: hahaha and you know this how? what a tool..
havent you got a braai to build, a jetty to embark upon and a dam to fake your own death in?
who says Im bitter, because i dont like the negative way you guys continually deride my country, so giving it back (which incidentally, none of you enjoy the negative connotations about your country either) makes me bitter?
hahahaha you really are a mamparra Fern..

Spies is a total waste of time. 4 times 15 meter runs in a game and he’s had a “blinder” mean while he’s missed tackles, not turned over balls at ruck time and has a lower tackle count than the other loosies. Spies = pressure on the boks on defense
