Province push past Griquas
18 Aug 2012
RORY KEOHANE saw Western Province snatch a 25-20 victory from a spirited Griquas outfit despite trailing at the break.
Tries to lock Ligtoring Landman and winger Wilmaure Louw propelled Griquas to a 12-point lead in the first 15 minutes of the match, but wing Ederies Arendse revitalised Province’s challenge in a first 40 that resembled the last 40 of last weekend’s home defeat against the Sharks.
WP coach Alistair Coetzee earlier in the week emphasised a return to the basics but the visitors were poor and the hosts frankly were not much better, even though they dominated field position.
Marcel Brache, among the success stories of the Varsity Cup in the last two seasons, inspired Western Province’s second half comeback and he was equally impressive in the first half.
Province settled midway through the second half and tries by JP du Plessis and Steven Kitshoff gave them the lead for the first time.
No team was dominant in the final quarter, although it was the hosts who were the more desperate as they chased the game. They were denied a try by the TMO but scored in the closing stages to get a losing bonus point.
Griquas traditionally are a difficult side to beat in Kimberley and while Coetzee won’t be pleased with the quality of the performance he will be delighted with the win.
Province earlier this year beat Griquas in Kimberley in the final of the Vodacom Cup.

Deon Fourie is the worst thrower of the ball into a lineout in the history of the currie cup rugby (probably in the history of the game)
18 Aug 2012, 15:08 pm
of course he farked that one up too..

@sharks_lover-7: So sad , bye bye Jean Luc !! Happy that at least he is going to the sharks cos he will be in great company there and it will benefit his play tremendously. Thats 2 potential great flyhalfs in a year !! WTF is wrong at WP !!!!!????

@sparticus-12: it’s crazy boet, we joke about it ,and of course as a Sharks supporter i am happy, but whats it say for WP rugby and their Management???

@sparticus-12:
From what I have seen Jean – Luc is a very good player.
Perhaps he is going as a result of Eksteen (bulls and sa shools) and Jordaan (Cheetahs) coming to Cape Town?
Not good for WP though.
18 Aug 2012, 15:22 pm
Duanne Vermeulen having a very poor game. To be expected I suppose after the long lay off. WP starting to wake up though and will probably still win this game. Griquas still just a ‘spirit’ team unfortunately.
It will bring them some successes along the way but not the trophy.
Lets see if the Sharks go down to Griquas in Kimberly for the third year in a row……

@Robzim-15: Boet Sharks have Lambie, Zeilinga, Robert Dup Jnr(capt Sharks u19), Now Carel Jnr, my point here is you cant only have 1 or 2 good prospects?
Carel is a WP through and through and through, he obviously would have been the one deciding? not so?? so that tell me something
18 Aug 2012, 15:35 pm
@sharks_lover-17:
I take your point, maybe Carel has something to do with it, not sure.
Wp do however also have a lot of young talent in that position (Van Aswegen, Swiel, Coleman, Eksteen, Jordaan) and here is a persistant rumour that Elton Jantjes is coming too.

@sharks_lover-17: Also Jean-Luc is a excellent cricketer. He has chosen to for go cricket in favour of a rugby career. The way I read it is he decided that after the Sharks had spoken to him.
He has signed a two year contract with the Sharks with a extension clause in place.
Well we have some top quality fhs. Next year it is Pat’s turn to just play fh though, but one franchise can’t have only one top fh they need two, actually they need two class players in every position because of the very long Super Rugby. This youngster will be in our Academy. Very pleased to have him and I have never seen him play. Just heard about him here and of course always rated his father he was brilliant.
18 Aug 2012, 15:44 pm
@Robzim-18: Jordaan is Paul Jordaan’s brother. If he is anything like Paul then he will be class. Province bought him from the Cheetahs.
From what I have read in the papers though, is that WP after letting Pollard go they said: “We’ve lost Pollard but the best one is staying home.” Meaning Jean-Luc. How wrong they were. It seems Sharks made him a offer he could not refuse.
So now Province have lost two great school boy fhs.

Takes far too long to post on this site. Will come back when it is fixed.
18 Aug 2012, 15:47 pm
Scarra should be first choice hooker for the CC
18 Aug 2012, 15:48 pm
I dont understand why peeps say Brache is useless , he is playing very well !! Kwaai try by the red head !!
18 Aug 2012, 15:49 pm
@Puma-21:
It is sad for us, but good luck to him- at least he has not gone to the Bulls, lol.
Carel was just about my favourite SA back ever – together with Gerber and Gysie Pienaar perhaps.
You must keep an eye on the WP under 21 flyhalf Tim Swiel. He made SA schools last year ahead of Pollard and played a brilliant match last night against the Cheetahs under 21′s. I just hope we do not lose him too.
18 Aug 2012, 15:51 pm
@sparticus-24:
Brache has improved considerably since last year- he did very well against the sharks last week too.
18 Aug 2012, 16:05 pm
Well done lads. Just caught the last 10min
18 Aug 2012, 16:08 pm
Marius Jonker blows for a try when the player didn’t even ground the ball over the line. What a plonker. No try clear as daylight. Lol
18 Aug 2012, 16:11 pm
@W.P-28: Ja – that was a mercy gift….if Griquas pip someone to the playoffs by 1 point – its thanks to Marius Jonker.
18 Aug 2012, 16:11 pm
congrats WP a good win, The big hole is never an easy game
18 Aug 2012, 16:15 pm
Good win.
18 Aug 2012, 17:04 pm
Best players for WP were Brache, du Plessis, Aplon and Kitschoff while the reserve hooker Siyabonga Ntubeni had an absolute gem of a second half.
Have your say
