Late penalty sinks WP

Late penalty sinks WP

RYAN VREDE saw the Golden Lions win a tight encounter against Western Province 26-23 thanks to a penalty after the siren had sounded.

WP’s discipline was awful throughout the match and it was fitting that a penalty, which stemmed from a blatantly offside Deon Fourie steal, would be their demise. Elton Jantjies’ sixth successful goal grabbed a much-needed victory for the union that has endured a torrid time off the field in recent weeks.

WP got off to a good start, spraying the ball across the park in a manner some of their supporters have been pleading for. They earned the right to do so through powerful phase play, which created holes in the Lions’ defensive that WP’s hot steppers exploited.

Gerhard van den Heever rounded off a 15-phase move which featured an excellent break from Juan de Jongh. Demetri Catrakilis converted and added a penalty shortly thereafter for a comfortable lead 12 minutes into the contest.

But the Lions regrouped and settled into their game plan, dominating the remainder of the half. Jantjies got them off with a penalty and Josh Strauss crossed the whitewash soon thereafter, finishing a slick attacking move.

Jantjies missed the conversion but banked a penalty just before the break to take his side ahead. WP must have felt comfortable in the opening exchanges, however, having being starved of possession and territory and in the face of an improved defensive effort, they looked decidedly rudderless.

The visitors started more strongly upon resumption of the match, but they butchered a clutch of very good opportunities. Again the Lions survived without too much damage inflicted and rebounded superbly, Jantjies capitalising on WP’s ill-discipline to establish a 20-13 lead going into the last 15 minutes.

Catrakilis set up a tense finish with a penalty nine minutes from full-time, but yet more brainless breakdown play saw Jantjies kick his fifth three pointer of the evening to regain breathing room.

But WP refused to relent and having camped in the Lions’ red zone for much of the closing stages, finally broke through, Brok Harris driving over. Catrakilis levelled to spark hope of a WP win, but the Lions drove into their half and Jantjies cooly slotted the decisive kick.

Boring Blue and White Dragons who have my undying support!

Hmmm, a tough match for us. But hopefully Lions will have a bad day and we pump them. That should make signing some of Elton, Cilliers, Taute, Coetzee, Callie and Strauss easier (Elton is essential though) as Bulls must surely be on to most of them… Poese…

The tight phases will be key in this match. Last time they played the Lions drilled the Stormers in the scrums and it will be interesting to see if Malherbe will cope better this time. The Lions should have the upper hand in the lineouts especially as Deon Fourie is playing as hooker. His mere presence as line-out feeder is guaranteed to bring a smile to the faces of the Lions jumpers.

    @Robzim-2:

Things don’t look the same when you compare Liebenberg, Bekker, Etzebeth with Fourie, Sttenkamp and Armand.

And I think we have better weather here than in the Cape right now. Perfect day for rugby and the breeze is dying down.

It is looking terible here at the moment- wet and windy.

I also hope the hooker Siyabonga Ntubeni gets a fair bit of gametime today- last week he was the best forward on the field during the 40 minutes he played and it will be intereting to see how he goes against better opposition.

As long as Province just do the basics correctly, that should see them through. and it’s a great opportunity for the youngsters.

And I hope Kolisi and Vermeulen both have stormers and combine as a unit.

They have at least an even chance.
I also have a sneaky suspicion they might take it but i hope I am wrong.

As far as the backs are concerned it will be interesting to see if Marcel Brache can play as well as he did last week when he impressed with some deft offloads (poor man’s SBW, lol) . It is a pity that his combination with the very impressive du Plessis has been broken for this match in order to make place for Juan de Jongh who has not impressed as an outside centre this year.

@Robzim-10: JDJ is a 12, see our season in 2010 when we didn’t have the donkey.

He’s not the best distributor but not nearly as bad as he’s made out to be and is easily the best centre in SA on flat ball.

And when does F Steyn pass for matter? Never.

Dunno about anyone else…..but Duane Vermeulen and Siya Kolisi’s contribtions have been significant. 2 Fellows anyone with an IQ above 3bull3 would want wearing green and gold.
JDJ, another ‘discard’ not half as shabby as some ‘expert’ bloggers would have us believe either.
    Pffffffft.
