Late penalty sinks WP
25 Aug 2012
RYAN VREDE saw the Golden Lions win a tight encounter against Western Province 26-23 thanks to a penalty after the siren had sounded.
WP’s discipline was awful throughout the match and it was fitting that a penalty, which stemmed from a blatantly offside Deon Fourie steal, would be their demise. Elton Jantjies’ sixth successful goal grabbed a much-needed victory for the union that has endured a torrid time off the field in recent weeks.
WP got off to a good start, spraying the ball across the park in a manner some of their supporters have been pleading for. They earned the right to do so through powerful phase play, which created holes in the Lions’ defensive that WP’s hot steppers exploited.
Gerhard van den Heever rounded off a 15-phase move which featured an excellent break from Juan de Jongh. Demetri Catrakilis converted and added a penalty shortly thereafter for a comfortable lead 12 minutes into the contest.
But the Lions regrouped and settled into their game plan, dominating the remainder of the half. Jantjies got them off with a penalty and Josh Strauss crossed the whitewash soon thereafter, finishing a slick attacking move.
Jantjies missed the conversion but banked a penalty just before the break to take his side ahead. WP must have felt comfortable in the opening exchanges, however, having being starved of possession and territory and in the face of an improved defensive effort, they looked decidedly rudderless.
The visitors started more strongly upon resumption of the match, but they butchered a clutch of very good opportunities. Again the Lions survived without too much damage inflicted and rebounded superbly, Jantjies capitalising on WP’s ill-discipline to establish a 20-13 lead going into the last 15 minutes.
Catrakilis set up a tense finish with a penalty nine minutes from full-time, but yet more brainless breakdown play saw Jantjies kick his fifth three pointer of the evening to regain breathing room.
But WP refused to relent and having camped in the Lions’ red zone for much of the closing stages, finally broke through, Brok Harris driving over. Catrakilis levelled to spark hope of a WP win, but the Lions drove into their half and Jantjies cooly slotted the decisive kick.

25 Aug 2012, 18:43 pm
@Dusky-228:
Are you talking about Jantjies or Kolisi because my post 219 was about Jantjies.
He did put up a Bok performance today imo.
Better than anything that Morne put up this whole year.

great game
great finish
wp a bit unlucky with that last penalty though
and how wierd is the outcome after the lions declined the earlier penalty opting for a 7 man scrum instead .
25 Aug 2012, 18:44 pm
Did not see the game
How did Vermeulen play
25 Aug 2012, 18:44 pm
Congratulations Lions and their supporters.
Well played.
25 Aug 2012, 18:44 pm
@grant100-253: Typical comment from the sourest losers on the planet. Disgraceful. Just congratulate the opponent and move on. WP had plenty of Super rugby players.
25 Aug 2012, 18:45 pm
Lions showed a lot of heart
25 Aug 2012, 18:45 pm

@nama1-258: Jantjies did deserve his MOM i still stick to what i said, but overall very good from him
25 Aug 2012, 18:46 pm
@nama1-255: Oh no. Jantjes was good today. Uselisi sucked but then he is expected to play way outside his abilities because of the loud mouth WP chest beaters.
25 Aug 2012, 18:46 pm
Dusky… They had 4? Vs lions 15?
25 Aug 2012, 18:46 pm
Kings should have to earn the right to play in Super 15
Lions should be staying in super 15 IMO
They should play Lions for the 5th Slot
Kings will lose most games by 30 plus
25 Aug 2012, 18:47 pm
@Dusky-238:
He pomped them both, so it was all good for him, I guess.
25 Aug 2012, 18:47 pm
@CoachPete-257:
Was good for about 20 minutes.
25 Aug 2012, 18:48 pm
@CoachPete-267: Pete Vermeulen was actualy quite good the first 20 min
25 Aug 2012, 18:48 pm

25 Aug 2012, 18:49 pm
@sharks_lover-270:
Hey howzit yeah Nama 1 says same
25 Aug 2012, 18:51 pm
@grant100-272:
Problem is if you are just there for maybe 1 season which star or decent players will sign with them
You can have all the fan support and the best coaches if you dont have the talent or a core of good players you will not win much
25 Aug 2012, 18:51 pm
@sharks_lover-264:
The boy defended well in this match. His defense is not as weak as you are trying to make it.
I’d rather have him defending that channel than Morne.
Btw, if you have the Lions vs Bulls match in the S15 recorded, have a look at it again and take a good look at his defense in that game.
25 Aug 2012, 18:52 pm
@Dawn-263:
No Dawn, he and Grant 100 is the same person.
25 Aug 2012, 18:53 pm
@CoachPete-273: yeah boet, Vermeulen is still a long way to being match fit for Bok rugby, but he showed some good signs
25 Aug 2012, 18:53 pm
ok
bulls turn
25 Aug 2012, 18:54 pm
@nama1-275: boet i saw him miss 2, and i was saying it like he is this very weak defender, I think ur taking it a bit out of contect
25 Aug 2012, 18:54 pm
@nama1-275:
Sounds like Jantjies played well too?
25 Aug 2012, 18:55 pm
@CoachPete-271:
It looks like it.
He put on a monster hit on Roodt which forced Roodt to leave the field.
25 Aug 2012, 18:55 pm
@nama1-275: morne did not miss a tackle last week Nama, if you wanna give credit?? do it both ways.
both didnt misses kicks either,
I am saying this and i aint Morne’s biggest fan,
25 Aug 2012, 18:56 pm
@sharks_lover-277:

Hugh bladen getting 2 old… Making to many misakes…. All the whiskey caught up with him… Time to quit rugby
25 Aug 2012, 18:57 pm
@CoachPete-280:
i like him, but boy oh boy i would realy like that kid to cut his hair.
25 Aug 2012, 18:57 pm
@nama1-281:
Just wish he was more consistent, maybe paying with the big boys a bit in bok team maybe raise his game?
25 Aug 2012, 18:58 pm
@CoachPete-280:
He had a great game Coach. The difference between the two teams but credit must also go to the Lion’s forwards who murdered WP at the breakdown.
He showed some nice touches keeping in mind that it was his first game in a while.
Also kicked 100% of his kicks at poles.
Deserved MoM.
25 Aug 2012, 18:58 pm
@CoachPete-283: Vermeulen nowhere near ready mate
BUt when fit, i would agree
Kanko also would have been far better thaqn POttie, but hey coach selected him not he himself
25 Aug 2012, 18:59 pm
@CoachPete-283: Watch young hooker from the Sharks in the next match, Monde HADEBE, good young player, ex glenwood
25 Aug 2012, 18:59 pm
What a shocker by the vlagman
25 Aug 2012, 18:59 pm
still no bulls thread?
25 Aug 2012, 19:00 pm
@sharks_lover-288:
I agree about Kanko he was playing good rugby
Potgieter is another Spies except a bit more bokfok
25 Aug 2012, 19:01 pm
@Petri-290: there were quite a few bad calls against the lions too mate, one which led to a WP try, these things happen
25 Aug 2012, 19:01 pm
@sharks_lover-282:
How do you rate Morne overall on defense?
Don’t take one game and use it as yardstick.
25 Aug 2012, 19:01 pm
Sorry “Befok”
25 Aug 2012, 19:01 pm
@CoachPete-292:
25 Aug 2012, 19:01 pm
Why 1 minute silence for the lonmin hooligans? In this farking country we will have a hour silence before every game then! What about farm murders? I say f lonmin….

And the much prophesised coming of the
Messiah came to pass.And he came to Coke Park,the kingdom
of Kevin.
And our breaths were taken away from us,such was our awe of this deity.
And indeed he was mighty.
And indeed he was great.
And the 200 spectators trembled,for they had heard of his mighty works in the the land of the mountain. Hex.
He bestrode the field like a Colossus
He was Gigantic
He was immense
He was huge.His skin glowed as does that of the cow fattened for the feast.
And when he fell to the ground the earth shook.From the East to the West.
Erm.In fact,Duanne was fat and slow.
And the disciples with jerseys of blue and white hoops began to mutter.Was this a false God.?
And there was great weeping,renting of clothes and gnashing of teeth
such which had not been seen since the Lamentations of Jeremiah Woe ,Woe Woe
25 Aug 2012, 19:02 pm
@sharks_lover-289:
And you went to Glenwood ?
25 Aug 2012, 19:03 pm
