Argentina 16 Springboks 16
25 Aug 2012
GARETH DUNCAN brought you live commentary from the Rugby Championship Test in Mendoza.
80 mins: Springbok attack well and run into the Pumas’ 22m area. However, as they break into a promising position, Argentina force the turnover and Landajo clears the ball into touch to end the game. This will be a massive blow to the Boks’ title aspirations. THE MATCH ENDS IN A 16-16 DRAW!
78 mins: Argentina bossing possession during the dying stages, but reserve hooker Tiaan Liebenberg forces the turnover during a maul. Last chance for the Boks.
72 mins: Boks manage to steal possession and look dangerous on attack with strong ball carries and impressive play. Pumas concede the penalty and Morne Steyn wants a shot at goal from a difficult angle. But the flyhalf misses. That was a crucial kick.
70 mins: Pumas slowing down play and trying to frustrate the Boks. It’s working so far.
65 mins: SPRINGBOK TRY! Against the run of play, the visitors score. Frans Steyn charges down an Argentinean kick and gets an easy run in to the chalk. Morne Steyn adds the extras to level the scores. THE SCORES ARE LEVEL AT 16-16!
63 mins: Pumas forcing play into the Bok half, and piling on the pressure. Try-scorer Fernández attempts a drop goal, but his shot goes wide.
62 mins: Pumas break into the Bok red zone following reserve scrumhalf Martín Landajo’s break. But the nippy player, who brushed off Ruan Pienaar, couldn’t find any support. South Africa steal possession, but Frans Steyn’s clearance comes off the side of the boot.
56 mins: MISSED OPPORTUNITY! Boks are on the front foot as they enjoy their most convincing play of the match. But 5m out from the tryline, Pumas force the turnover and clear danger.
54 mins: SPRINGBOK PENALTY! It doesn’t take long before Morne Steyn gets his fourth shot at goal. The Boks broke into the Pumas half on attack, and the hosts are pinned for not rolling away quick enough. PUMAS LEAD 16-9!
51 mins: PUMAS PENALTY! Van der Merwe’s cynical play costs the Boks as Rodriguez converts his third penalty. PUMAS LEAD 16-6!
50 mins: Lock Andries Bekker is hauled off early, and Flip van der Merwe gets an early run. Van der Merwe then concedes a penalty at the lineout for dangerous play.
48 mins: SPRINGBOK PENALTY! Morne Steyn converts his third shot at the posts. Springboks cut the deficit to seven points. PUMAS LEAD 13-6!
47 mins: Pumas concede another penalty minutes later, this time at the tackle point and near to the posts. Morne Steyn steps up.
45 mins: Pumas concede the first penalty of the second stanza for offside, 54m from the posts. Francois Steyn wants another shot at goal. But the inside centre pulls it wide again.
43 mins: Boks don’t buckle under pressure and manage to boot play out of danger from the lineout.
42 mins: Boks take in restart, but no real distance on the clearance. Argentina punish this mistake as they boot play into the corner of South Africa’s 22m area.
HALF TIME: Argentina 13 Springboks 3
40 mins: Boks put up a high ball and wing Lwazi Mvovo chases. But he loses the ball forward, and Walsh blows for half-time.
39 mins: The Boks get some good ground into Pumas’ territory, but as they enter the hosts’ red zone, Coetzee spills the ball in contact and Argentina clear. Frustrating play by the Boks.
36 mins: PUMAS PENALTY! Rodriguez makes no mistake as he converts his fifth attempt at goal. Right through the middle. PUMAS LEAD 13-3!
35 mins: Looks like the Boks have undone all their hard work, which helped them opening their score tally. They concede a penalty in a kickable position.
33 mins: SPRINGBOK PENALTY! Morne Steyn gets it over this time, converts his second attempt at goal. But Boks need to work much harder to get back into this match. ARGENTINA LEAD 10-3!
32 mins: Morne Steyn gets a chance to redeem himself moments later. Argentina are penalised for obstruction.
30 mins: Morne Steyn misses an easy kick. Should’ve been an easy penalty goal for the flyhalf.
28 mins: Much better attacking rugby by the Boks, as they clear more effectively at the tackle points. Scrumhalf Francois Hougaard gets better service and the backline run much better with this platform. Argentina are then penalised for offside.
23 mins: Pumas continue their dominance in the breakdown battle and win a penalty in a kickable position. Rodriguez takes aim for his third pot at goal, but pushes the attempt wide.
20 mins: WHAT IS GOING ON? Boks are struggling as Pumas are delivering a strong and physical performance in the first stanza.
16 mins: PUMAS TRY! Argentina excelling on attack and carry the ball well into Springbok red zone. The Bok defence is in shambles as the Pumas get quick ball after each phase and inside centre Santiago Fernández breaks away to dot down under the posts. Rodríguez adds the extras. PUMAS LEAD 10-0!
14 mins: Springboks have good attacking position in the Pumas’ red zone. However, the hosts compete very well at the breakdown to spoil the visitors’ rhythm. Argentina force the turnover.
10 mins: PUMAS PENALTY! The Springboks’ ill-discipline costing them early on. Rodríguez slots his second attempt at goal, and the hosts are ahead. ARGENTINA LEAD 3-0!
7 mins: Bok flank Marcell Coetzee is penalised for a high tackle, and Sanchez boots play into the Springbok 22m area. Great touch finder. However, the Boks lineout competes well and steals the feed. South Africa clear play.
5 mins: Boks are pinned for offside again, this time inside their own territory. Pumas fullback Marin Rodríguez lines up his first kick, but doesn’t have the distance as the kick falls under the crossbar.
2 mins: Pumas concede their first penalty near the halfway line, referee Steve Walsh blows for a breakdown transgression. Inside centre Frans Steyn steps up to take an early shot at goal. It’s a good strike, but the kick is pushed wide.
KICK-OFF: Springbok flyhalf Morne Steyn starts the match with a deep kick-off. Pumas captain Juan Martín Fernández Lobbe takes in and carries strongly. Boks are over eager in the Argentine red zone and are pinned for offside.

Tough game, unexpected result. Same thing as AB’s in second Ireland test, the top teams don’t look so good when they are challenged at the collision.
No reason for bok fans to panick yet, this was just one game – look what the AB’s did in the third test.
26 Aug 2012, 00:27 am
that game has just blown the messiah status thru its arse
bugger the stats, pick some gdam winners and players that stand out, otherwise you are going to go down as the worst Bok coach in history.
As for Keo – how obvious is that a draw (that shoulda been a loss) to the argies. they shoulda sealed that bugger in mendoza ..their forwards had us..
26 Aug 2012, 00:28 am
what you drinking at the moment CAB? best have another mate.
26 Aug 2012, 00:30 am
shitarse result – no im sorry there is no ways the boks deserved to draw that – they were all over us and then realised this is now how its meant to be and started to defend.
PdV never in his wildest had this result – that is def a first.

fkn useless- dont even know why i watch this **** – i mean its like sticking needles in your **** – you know its just gonna be torture.
26 Aug 2012, 00:34 am
@fitz1ella-636: the loss in Arg will come, all of the 6N teams have lost there, Australia too and NZ escaped by the skin of their teeth in ’05.
26 Aug 2012, 00:37 am
bekker no fkn ****, potgieter, jannie, teddie, coetzee – useless not one 1fkn meter between the 6 of them – thats the gdam pack – actuallly i lie bekker did pick up a meter, in the 79th minute when playing his favoured position … right wing…
can we not get a gdam dinosaur coach from the past who actually recognises dinosaurs? where is pote fkn fourie when u need him?
26 Aug 2012, 00:40 am
what you talking about Bigtit?
the ABs drew in Argentina in 1985, and never even played Arg in 05.
but I guess it embellishes your point a bit.
26 Aug 2012, 00:41 am
no im sorry these are not springboks – u can call them what you want – there are currently only 2 springboks in that pack – Alberts and Beast and maybe the young Etsebeth.
26 Aug 2012, 00:49 am
@poppa69-659: ’06 then pedant
but if you want to go there NZ already had a draw with Argentina on their record.

@cab-658: Was Bekker back on the field? Didn’t catch that. It seems he was disappointed in his own sh1tty tackling. Surely a half decent coach sit him down and explain that he needs to lower his body position when tackling. Also, why does he, or anyone else for that matter, not try and steal the oppositions ball in the lineout? Is it a strategy to not be competitive or just arrogance? Bekker should not have been rushed back into the starting lineup either. He is definitely not playing to his potential and should maybe be benched until he improves.
26 Aug 2012, 01:16 am
@garth-662:
bekker was absolutely kak as were the other 6 forwards – the only decent player was alberts in the pack – the thing with Bekker is he could actually be immensely taltented and great but he;s gotta put his body on the line and he;s not prepared to do that. he’s got immense height, matfields anticipation and alot of strength that has been developed, but they just are not playing asBok forwards- get some buggers in there, they need fourie and an elstadt to fire that lacklustre shitarse pack up – and then albert ploughing in like rolling thunder as he always does – ah **** man – this could be such a good team if they just upped their pack dynamic and psychology, instead its no penalties staid disciplines who goint to get bent – this is just the start of it, i called it and im going to say i called and its going to get worse, not better, unless they start picking some players with fire –
kolisi, vermeulen, fourie, elstadt, brussow – pick those bugger and we beat the ~ABs whats the bet?
26 Aug 2012, 02:02 am
@ Bigtwit
2006? Wasn’t that the Kiwi B team that beat Ireland by 40 points the previous November? The A team was playing elsewhere at the time
26 Aug 2012, 02:12 am
@AiDoc-664:
Yep, we picked 2 teams at that time. One to go to Argentina while the other one stayed at home for the Ireland tests. A couple did venture over from the Ireland game though.
26 Aug 2012, 02:25 am
@cab-663: Agreed, Eldstadt and Etsebeth would be a better lock combo if Bekker is not going come to the party. He does not have the luxury of Schalk, Bakkies and Juan like Matfield had. He needs to get stuck in and use his size. If you see Etsebeth and Bekker they are massive, but need to start dominating. They are all playing in S15 mode and need to step up.
26 Aug 2012, 02:54 am
Why would you even compare to the Abs results with Arg. Whats the point.
If you want to be the Numro Uno team in the world, the only comparision is to winning.
26 Aug 2012, 04:02 am
If P divvy drew to Arg he’d be the worst coach of bok history…
26 Aug 2012, 07:25 am
Naas seemed out of his depth discussing Rugby with Mallet – Mallet is the best Supersport analyst ever, the rest are frigging jokes
26 Aug 2012, 09:20 am
Pick some real tough men , like Esltadt, and bring it on. Potgieter is a moegoe ffs.
26 Aug 2012, 12:30 pm
Apart from our forwards performing like a swarm of bumble bees, we did not have a Heinrich Brussouw there to feth the ball. The biggest culpret was Morne Steyn who kicked away the ball (the little we got without getting a penalty against us) into the hands of the Pumas.Get rid of Morne and rather play Hougaard on the wing from the bench and play Ruan Pienaar at s/half. Then bring back Bakkies and Joe van Niekerk to come and teach these youngsters how to play test rugby. If meyer take this team to New Zealand the All Blacks will make mincemeat out of them. That will be a BIG embarresment for sa rugby.
26 Aug 2012, 13:19 pm
@AiDoc-664: does Carter play in the Kiwi B team? how about Collins, Ali Williams etc..but as I say, NZ already had a draw on their record to Arg, so perhaps you lot should stop your infantile crowing.
27 Aug 2012, 07:36 am
@Big Hit-672: what, you mean like the crowing from 99% of Saffa and English fans after 2007?
hehe, get used to it littletit, if your real team SA perform as valiantly as they did against the Argies then they should be quite prepared for the “crowing” of kiwi fans..
same with your second team England…but the most pleasing thing is this, the ABs are actually living up to the WC champions tag, unlike both SA and ENgland before them who capitulated very quickly after winning a knock out tournament..
is this what really bugs you the most? that most kiwis would STILL prefer to maintain an 80% win percentage in games played, rather then a 6 week tourny once every four years?
I do think 2003 will be England rugbys version of their soccer counterparts 1966..
