Kempies’ triumph proves schoolboy quality

Kempton Park’s 20-10 victory over Momument in the Beeld Trophy final is an indication of the strength of South African schoolboy rugby.
Kempton Park have enjoyed their best season since 1989 – the last time they celebrated Beeld Trophy glory. It was the second fairytale story of the year after Centurion powered to the Nu Power title after downing Waterkloof in the final.
Monnas were touted as favourites as they were at home and beat Klofies in the semi-finals last week. They also had former SA Schools representative flyhalf Jako van der Walt and Golden Lions U18 Craven Week captain Chris Massyn in their line-up.
However, Kempies shocked the hosts as they enjoyed a comfortable win. This was their fourth major victory of the season, having beaten Waterkloof, EG Jansen and Middelburg too.
‘It was a total team performance,’ Kempton Park 1st XV coach Kwagga Loubser told Schoolboy Derby. ‘Wee last won the title 23 years ago, so there was plenty of hunger among the players. I was very proud of our defensive effort – we refused to back off.’
Loubser added that Kempies’ triumph proved that the traditional rugby schools are getting challenged more regularly by the so-called ‘smaller schools’.
‘South African school rugby is becoming more professional every year. Every team has a chance of beating the other on its day.’
