Super Rugby draw altered for Aussies
30 Aug 2012
Super Rugby will start a week earlier in 2013 so that two Australian derbies can be played.
This will allow the Australians to break early ahead of the June Test window and have an extra week’s preparation for their three-Test series against the British & Irish Lions.
The disruption for the New Zealand and South African teams should be minimal.
‘We are looking to start that Australian conference a week earlier which, in actual fact, means two games between their sides,’ said Sanzar boss Greg Peters. ‘It’s not an ideal situation but it’s a compromise that all three Sanzar countries and Sanzar have come to because it’s such an important tour.’
A preliminary draw has been issued to franchises and broadcasters but has yet to be officially confirmed.

@sharks_lover-2: It’s called planning ahead mate, something those clowns at Boundary Road, Newlands don’t believe in.

Let’s move away from knee jerk reactions, folks.
This seems like a very reasonable request from the Aussies.
And it’s not going to disrupt our schedules significantly.

Reasonable yes, but Greg Peters is bad news. ‘Too much rugby’ is his fault.

Aussie Super Rugby derbies are just awful. No wonder the NRL is so popular in Aus.

@Spiesisworthless1-6:
Oh well, i guess that is a question to ask the Aussies, maybe they find our derbies also boring. Personally I have also seen enough of Stormers/Cheetahs for example and find a match between two top school sides more appealing.

Robbo is a quisling.
He would bend over and pass the soap if the convicts asked him nicely.
Not that that they would ask nicely of course.

@Jeez-5: “Too much rugby” is most definitely to blame and it’s going to be even worse by the time the BIL next tour NZ & SA.

@Robzim-7: Our derbies weren’t great either TBH. The NZ derbies were on another level altogether.
All in all, Super Rugby should be more focused on exo-conference clashes: also getting tired of seeing the same teams from the same countries playing each other over and over.

I said it before and I will say it again, the queens should have been allowed to play in conference against SA teams. SA should have asked for the draw to be changed that all Derby matches be played at the beginning. Especially since the wobblies are asking for an extra week, this would have allowed for a fair qualification into the super 15 by the SA teams and none of this rubbish of having to chop a team for another. It would have guaranteed exposure for the queens and the best of the SA teams would have qualified.
We can even go further and say that only 3 teams from each regions qualify with the remaining teams going into a round robin to qualify for the remaining 3 spots. Making it super 12 with the best teams competing for the coveted title.

Too many derbies. S15 has the most ridiculous format. Who wants to see all these local games? Super Rugby is about playing against the foreign franchises.

@Jeez-11: Agreed.
Oh, how I yearn for the days of Super 12!
But this time with four teams only per country.
Young William must be turning in his grave and if he was here again he’d probably put the ball down and start kicking it again…

@STBUR-13: Whilst I personally agree with you, I believe that the ratings say otherwise somehow.

@gunther-8:
A quisling? Naw, just not xenophobic.
A good example of a local quisling is a bloke who lives off the fat of Cape Town but whose head is buried so deep up the arse s of the blue bull fans that only his blue suede shoes are visible from the outside.

@Robzim-16:
Lives off the fat of the land?
Don’t make larf .
I’m a net contributor.
Unlike you in your imitation crocs.
Now get back to finding that soap.

Come 2017, NZ’s teams will begin playing one week earlier, all other things being equal (assuming there’s SR in 2017; they are about to lose my following shortly. Can’t stand the apathy, empty stands, illegal tactics & poor officiating )

“The disruption for the New Zealand and South African teams should be minimal.”
Please explain me, how an AUSSIE derby can disrupt teams in other countries?

Copping the Americans is never a good idea. S R is based on their format right?
Have your say
