Shipperley to debut for Wallabies
4 Sep 2012
Wing Dominic Shipperley gets a run-on start against the Springboks in Perth, while Mike Harris and Tatafu Polota Nau return via the bench.
Shipperley, 21, has been impressive for the Reds and comes in with the hope that he will bolster Australia’s attacking potency. Harris and Polota-Nau have both recovered from injuries and provide quality cover on the wood.
No 8 Radike Samo returns to the starting line-up, with Scott Higginbotham dropping to the bench. In the backline Adam Ashley-Cooper shifts to centre with Kurtley Beale taking over at fullback.
Meanwhile Stephen Moore will become the most capped hooker in Australian Test history, playing his 73rd match in the position.
Australia – 15 Kurtley Beale, 14 Dominic Shipperley, 13 Adam Ashley-Cooper, 12 Berrick Barnes, 11 Digby Ioane, 10 Quade Cooper, 9 Will Genia, 8 Radike Samo, 7 Michael Hooper, 6 Dave Dennis, 5 Nathan Sharpe, 4 Sitaleki Timani, 3 Ben Alexander, 2 Stephen Moore, 1 Benn Robinson
Subs: 16 Tatafu Polota-Nau, 17 James Slipper, 18 Scott Higginbotham, 19 Liam Gill, 20 Nick Phipps, 21 Mike Harris

Hehehe Beale gets selected on the probability he can’t possibly have another shocker like the one against the ABs, hope it works out for him because law of averages can be a ***** sometimes…

This will be SA’s best change in a while to beat Australia- with especially the two world class players in O’Conner and Pocock and captain James Horwill missing they are about 30-40% weaker imo.
@grant10-2:
Hi Grant….. Personally I think this whole issue of the fetchers is overrated as everybody should be able to fetch and if the so-called specialist fetcher flank don’t offer much more than only fetching (like Pocock, McCaw, etc do) then it is not worth to pick one. The best “fetchers” in SA rugby that I have seen this year were Bismark and Deon Fourie who are hookers.
Steggies and probably Brussow’s days are numbered – they have not kept up with modern times and are these days not much more than spoiling short-arsed penalty machines
I think Heinecke is dead right to have left them both out (even when Brussow was fit) .
Brussow is not bad at acting though- remember his spectacular dive when Williams gave him a friendly shove in the face- he made Suarez or Cristiano Ronaldo looked like amateurs. I am not saying he will make Hollywood but maybe the Free State Amateur Drama Society can utilise him in future as he will most likely have lots of spare time during the future international rugby seasons
4 Sep 2012, 09:16 am
@Robzim-9: Howxit Rob…trust you well mate…
We will have to agree to disagree on this 1 ….
Brussow murdered Stormers and Sharks in Super rugby….the days of the 3 large bll carrying loose forwards have been extinct since the Mc Caws, Waughs and G Smiths smashed us literally week after week….game after game….
We have class fetchers in Brussow and F Louw….
Although we may beat the Aussies this week without 1 [ I also think we will be up for it ]….I dont see any balance or long term success by insisting the Aussies and Kiwis are wrong and we are right….
results prove us horribly wrong…
Bismarck and Brussow would be the 1 st 2 names on my Bok sheet when fit….
the next name would be F Louw as reserve….
But I know you differ on the subject….and that is cool….but lets see what happens over next few weeks
4 Sep 2012, 09:21 am
Don’t let the Aussies recent wobblies fool you.
This is a very good side.
Samo, Genia, Cooper, Ioane and Barnes (pre Waratahs days) know each other very well.
Ashley-Cooper’s best position IMO is 13 which is where he’s lining up on Saturday.
It’s Sharpe’s last party in Perth so he will give it his all.
Not sure why Higgenbotham isn’t starting ahead of Dennis, but Deans obviously has a plan for second half.
Is Simmons injured?
4 Sep 2012, 09:24 am
and Rob….yes…everybody should fetch???
But they dont…..
that is the issue….body shape, speed and more important the timing at the breakdown is crucial….as well as having the balls and strength to get over and either slow down or turn over the ball takes specialist skill and downright bravery….
Both F Louw and Brussuw have got the pitbull strength and determination to , and skill and timing , to make a huge difference.
With respect to players like Schalk, Alberts, Marcelle, they are just not in the same league.
Players like D Fourie and Bissy also have the attitude and body shapes to do the job well…..
the taller loosies are very few and far between that are able to rule the deck effectively.
even Deans and Henry admitted that Brussow had added a new dimension to Boks….
but we flippantly and arrogantly rely on domkrag to do a specialist role…
like a lady going to a GP when she has fanny problems…..its plain stupid imo…
4 Sep 2012, 09:33 am
Ra!n!ng !n Perth. If ra!ns on Saturday !t w!ll def!n!tely su!te the Boks.
Th!nk Flo needs to start.
4 Sep 2012, 09:36 am
@grant10-12: You know all about fanny problems hey Gwantie
4 Sep 2012, 09:42 am
Grant … Good posts, you have nearly convinced me. Flo is ok for me, he offers more then just fetching, I am just not convinced about Brussow and Stegmann.
4 Sep 2012, 09:49 am
@Jeraldjay-13: Just checked the weather for Perth. Showing sun from tomorrow and full sun on Saturday.
4 Sep 2012, 09:51 am
@Robzim-15: @grant10-12: Howzit both of you.
See AC says ‘WP adopting Chiefs blueprint” for next years Super Rugby. What you make of that?
4 Sep 2012, 09:53 am
@Robzim-15: Flo is probably H Meyers version of a fetcher in that he gives the lineout option and is ‘ big ‘ for a fetcher …bloody shame that Stormers lost him.
For me though Brussow is probably the prototype osf what we need….he is an underrated carrier and even passes…which some loosies very seldom do….
For me that loose trio is all about balance and mix….
We have Vermeulen and Kanko for 8….both are great lineout exponebts , and Vermeulen offers the power and physicality whereas Kanko adds the pace and flair….in a horses for courses I would start Kanko at 8 for Aussies [ who will go wide at every opportunity ] and Vermeulen against Kiwius where the war will be more attritional….
Alberts , Marcelle, Kolisi, Elstaht all great 7 options….
And Flo and Brussow are the pitbulls….
Steggies really struggled at Bok level, and will need to show the 2010 form to make me sit up and take notice again….
You mention there negative role in your post [ spoilers ] ….but that is exactly why we need the short asses…they are a pain in the opposition butts….that is there job….
anyway…gotta run…keep well boet…must crack a beer soon
4 Sep 2012, 09:55 am
@Robzim-15: There is a perception and / or misinterpretation that Brussow is not a good ball carrier or support player, and that he only really excels at “fetching”.
I will argue against that. Not many players would have scored that try along the touchline against the Bulls earlier this year.
Also, he generally makes 15-20 tackles a game in addition to the ball he slows down.
An invaluable player in many ways.

@Puma-16:
Loads of Saffa support !n Perth. Was the?r for the 13-13 draw ?n 2001.
Freemantle has a great n!ghtl!fe.
4 Sep 2012, 09:59 am
@Jeraldjay-20: Freemantle is awesome. Excellent night life. Plenty restaurants about too. Really enjoyed it the time I was there.
Yip there are plenty of saffas living in Perth. Not a day went by when I was there did I not hear a saffa accent….lol.
I think the Boks stay in Freemantle when they play there. Well I know they used too. With Meyer not sure where they are staying.
4 Sep 2012, 10:01 am
I think the Wallabies will win this one, but both the Boks and the Pumas will beat them at home, allowing the Boks to sneak second place in the comp. Just hope the Boks play better this weekend.
4 Sep 2012, 10:01 am
Here we go again.Delusional Saffas thinking Ozzies will be a push over.Think again
Bok pack has been anything but dominant this entire year and will know Boks backline play is non existant
Ozzies will get enough ball to create opportunities and that’s when they will strike.Kurtley Beale while he’s been below avg vs AB’s he usually has a field days vs Boks.Add the fact boks will continue kicking ball aimlessy in hope.Beale,Shipperly,Ioane on counter will tear Boks a new one.Barnes excellent tactical kicking will relieve pressure.
Ozzies also realing from heavy defeat with Deans back against the wall.they are playing at home.Add fact that if Ozzies get more than a 8-12 point SA doesn’t have good enough pattern to score tries to overcome deficit.
Wallabies by 12-15 points
4 Sep 2012, 10:06 am
@mshiniwami-23: If we lose to Wallabies by 12 or 15 points I would be very disappointed. That would be a massive failure.
4 Sep 2012, 10:11 am
@grant10-12: Don’t think body shape really comes into it. Flo, Warbuton, McCaw are all relatively tall players, and still perform the role with distinction.
Imho it all comes down to showing good judgement, and knowing when to commit to the breakdown.
4 Sep 2012, 10:12 am
@mshiniwami-23: par for the course Mish, it happens before every game as you know..
this is a much more balanced wallaby side, who have had the number over SA quite dramatically recently.. add the “travel disadvantage” to South Africa and your scoreline looks right to me..
4 Sep 2012, 10:14 am
@mshiniwami-23: Yeah, and Breaking News: Bryce to be handed the whistle for Saturday…
4 Sep 2012, 10:15 am
Puma-24
I get you.but how do u suppose are Boks going to score points? Bok defence isn’t all that good, upfront the ruck cleaning/efficiency has been shocking since the England series-no corrections made.Hooper going to have a field day.
I have no faith whatsoever, especially with Boks kicking away 60-70% of their ball.
4 Sep 2012, 10:44 am
@Puma-17:
Hi Puma,
Re the chiefs blueprint; It sounds exciting but in order to play like them a team needs the right type of players… The Stormers have quite a few but certainly need a new halfback pair before they can even think to play like that- hopefully Nic Groom and van Aswegen/ Tim Swiel/Jantjes (if he moves to CT) can step up into that role. Lets see.
btw.. the WP centre Michael Brache is the closest we have to a SBW (in terms of the offloads) , not sure whether he will be able to play like that at superrugby though.
Re Fremantle; I agree, it is a fantastic place- great restaurants, market and lovely scuba diving or snorkeling at nearby Rottness Island- nice harbour and jail to visit as well , lol. …. Apparently the boks always stay in the Esplenade which is a very nice hotel. And nobody will bother them there, it is not really rugby country and most people wont have a clue who they are and pester them for autographs etc.

@Robzim-15: ALL THREE of Australia’s opensiders STILL top the list on pilfers meaning the still get them…if Nigel Owens allows a Northern Hemisphere free-for-all at the breakdown, Hooper to smoke us
4 Sep 2012, 13:02 pm
@grant10-10: Can’t agree more. I also can’t understand the obsession with “ball carrying” loose forwards. I recently watched some of our games from 2009 and Brussouw was the difference, not only is his timing, technique & success at the ruck really good but he also carried the ball well and tackled players backwards.
I know he’s injured but still feel we need a specialist ‘fetcher’ even if they’re not as effective as he was. I’m glad to see F. Louw is in the squad, just hope he gets an oppertunity.
4 Sep 2012, 13:11 pm
@Juggernaught-33: Yes…in 2009 Brussow was instrumental in us beating the kiwis and B Lions as well…
He has won all 4 matches he started against All Blacks….
a mystery why Meyer has snubbed him….for me he is the best fetcher on the planet…
@Transformation-32: Hooper will prove a handfull Saturday….best we start with Flo….but it seems Meyer will gamble on the 3 carriers again…
4 Sep 2012, 13:47 pm
@Rhys7-30:
agree with that side.
why bench their best forward??? Higginbotham??
crazy ideal. Good see samo back though but he needs to run straight ahead!
5 Sep 2012, 02:11 am
@Juggernaught-33: It is based on the inaccurate assumption that a flanker has to be over 190cm and 120kg to be a ball carrier.
George Smith was a better ball carrier than most of the Wallaby forwards in his time, making up for size with use of footwork and angles.
Michael Hooper as well, despite being only 95kg, makes good metres in attack with footwork, balance and pure speed.
I think a lot of Saffas underrate Brussow in this regard. While he is not a Willem Alberts, he makes the advantage line well in tight with pick and drives, and is among the best in directing and controlling possession at the back of driving mauls.
Have your say
