JdV: ‘Boks have a point to prove’

Jean de Villiers believes the Springboks have plenty to work on if they want to achieve victory over the Wallabies in Perth this Saturday.

The Boks have endured an inconsistent start to the Rugby Championship, beating Argentina 27-6 in Cape Town before being held to a 16-16 draw in Mendoza. Their next opponents, the Wallabies, were dominated in their opening Tests against the All Blacks as they were beaten 27-19 in Sydney before going down 22-0 in Auckland.

Both teams have been criticised for these performances, creating plenty of pressure ahead of this weekend’s Rugby Championship Test Down Under.

Bok skipper De Villiers said his team enjoyed a good week of preparation, but stressed that they will need to improve if they are to beat the Wallabies – a side they have only beaten once over the last seven encounters.

‘Preparations in Perth have been good,’ De Villiers said on Friday. ‘We weren’t happy with our last performance against Argentina. We have a lot to work on. While the preparations have gone well, the trick will be implementing those plans for the full 80 minutes on Saturday.

‘I don’t think we can read too much into the Wallabies’ defeats to the All Blacks. They were up against a quality side, who are ranked No 1 in the world and are the World Cup winners. The Wallabies still showed a lot of positives over those two Tests.

‘Over the last seven games, we have only beaten them once. And that says a bit. Both teams will have a point to prove on Saturday, and we will go out to do that.’

However, De Villiers noted that victory in Perth won’t be easy. Despite the loss of hooker Stephen Moore (hamstring), he believed there were several other players who will be expected to play a big role for the hosts.

‘The Wallabies won’t be weakened by the loss of Stephen Moore. They have three world-class hookers, and Tatafu Polota-Nau and Saia Faingaa provide quality back-up. [Lock] Nathan Sharpe also brings a lot to that team up front, and the guys around him will make an impact … like [openside flank] Michael Hooper, who has the abilities to change the game.

‘The Wallabies are a skilled team. As as a backline, they are difficult to play against. On attack, they are very good and they are defensively solid. We need to up our game if we want to win.’

This weekend’s Bok match 22 will have a different look compared to the last one that faced the Wallabies – an 11-9 World Cup quarter-final defeat in October 2011. There’s a huge loss of experience, especially among the forwards, but De Villiers believes the young players will use this opportunity to prove they deserve a starting place.

‘In the pack of forwards, we have about 112 Test caps,’ said De Villiers. ‘Last year, we had John Smit, who had played in 111 Tests, and Victor Matfield, who had played 110 Tests. So there is a big difference in terms of experience.

‘But the guys who have come in have done really well. This is a new Springbok team, and this is an opportunity for players to put up hand and stake a claim for position in the side. The guys have realised that.’

@bokfan1-50: I agree with you. I also want to add that I do not want the boks to copy the All Blacks, but the coaching team should be intelegent enough to adjust our gameplan and style of play to the current rules and regulations, including the modern game defensive systems.

It’s demorolizing to see our poor guys running head first into 3 defenders waiting with baited breath while we all know that they can do much better than that!

I maintain, it’s no surprise that the 2 south african super rugby teams playing great running rugga are coached by Kiwi’s. (sharks and lions) At least the Cheetahs gave it a go, until they lost their flyhalf.

JdV is not sounding confident, lets hope Oz have a shocker and make it easy for Boks to punt their way to victory .. maybe with some more confidence we will inovate our play.

What the hell is Loubscher doing as backline coach ? who the hell is coaching the fwds ? I thought D*ck Muir was awful but this seems worse.

We need to beg back JFourie and get some input from FdP (like VM)

Condom Factory burns down in New Zealand.

Prime Minister of New Zealand, is awoken at 4am by the telephone.

Premier, its the health Minister here. Sorry to bother you at this hour but
there is an emergency!!! I’ve just received word that the Durex factory in New
Zealand has burned to the ground. It is estimated that the entire New Zealand
supply of condoms will be gone by the end of the week!

PM: ‘SH*T!!! – the economy will never be able to cope with all those unwanted
    babies – we’ll be ruined!!’

Health Minister: ‘We’re going to have to ship some in from….Britain?’

PM: ‘No chance!! The Poms will have a field day on this one!!’

Health Minister: ‘What about South Africa ?’

PM: ‘I’ll call SA – tell them we need ten million condoms; ten inches long and
eight inches thick!! That way they’ll continue to RESPECT the All Blacks!’

Three days later a delighted Health Minister rushes out to open the boxes.
He finds ten million condoms, 10 inches long, 8 inches thick, all coloured
green and gold with small writing on each one…

    MADE IN South Africa
    Size: SMALL

Don’t follow in footsteps of Zuma or state, pupils urged
    07 September 2012

    Mkhululi Ndamase

UNIVERSITY of the Free State vice-chancellor Professor Jonathan Jansen has urged Nelson Mandela Bay pupils not to be like President Jacob Zuma and incompetent government officials.

“Guys, I know it is difficult being you because you live in a country where the most important people in the country do not know how to keep their zips up,” he told a group of high school pupils yesterday.

“The only way out of poverty is through education, not through the ANC and not through connections. “Girls, respect your bodies. First get a degree, then get pregnant. The boys will run away when they find out that you are pregnant. Protect yourselves at all times.”

Jansen was invited by former Uitenhage High School pupil Ghauderen Coetzee-De Vos, who wrote a chapter in his book, Great South African Teachers, to motivate pupils ahead of their final exams.

Hundreds of pupils from David Livingstone Senior Secondary School in Schauderville, Port Elizabeth and Uitenhage’s McCarthy Comprehensive and John Walton schools also attended the motivational talk held at the Uitenhage High School.

Before moving on to the serious stuff, Jansen showed pupils another side of his personality – that of comedian.
“I am happy to be in Uitenhage where there are more cars than people.
“Before coming here I had never heard of Uitenhage High, so I googled it. It said Uitenhage High was the best school in South Africa after David Livingstone,” he said to loud applause from the pupils.
“This was the coldest winter. It is believed it was so cold that the president was sleeping with his own wives to keep warm.”

After the ice was broken, he got down to business.
“I grew up on the Cape Flats where I was raised by very religious parents, Abraham and Sarah.
“They saved me from being like my peers who were drinking alcohol and ended up in jail – they taught me the value of education,” Jansen said.

He said he was the worst performing student in primary school.

“When I got to Std 8 [Grade 10], my teacher told me I was pretending to be stupid and that I had potential. “From that day onwards, I never came second in my class in South Africa and in America. That day changed my life. “My daughter is deaf in one ear and we never told her about the deaf ear. We always told her what she can do, not what she cannot do. “You are smarter than you think. Do not let anyone tell you what you cannot do. “Do not be like the incompetent people who run this province – do not be like the government,” Jansen said.

He said when Oprah Winfrey was at his university last year, they had spent 30 minutes alone chatting.
“I asked her how she had managed to be one of the richest women in the world after she was molested as a child by her stepfather and was a teenage prostitute.

“Her answer was simple. She said in her Chicago accent, ‘Jonathan, when they gave me a chance for education I said Oprah do not mess it up’. “If you think you have problems, think about what Oprah went through growing up in a racist Mississippi where men were lynched and still accomplished what she accomplished.”

Grade 12 pupil Darrel George, 17, said Jansen motivated him. “The fact that he brought up some personal experience is good. Sometimes we do need to be motivated because we cannot always motivate ourselves. He was very motivating and I enjoyed it,” he said. Anita Nokhetshe, 19, also a Grade 12 pupil, said: “It was very inspirational, especially the way he did it with laughter. “It is good to hear something nice instead of being told what you cannot do.”

School principal Timothy Heynes said the school was honoured to have Jansen motivating pupils in a fun way.

Coetzee-De Vos said Jansen was the most relevant person in the higher education system to motivate pupils.

@logie_Jumpbuck-62: Thanks Logie, and I agree with you too – I dont want us to be “copying” anyone – least of all the smelly ABs!
Jeez – the Boks WERE the trend-setters for 100 years – they followed US, and so it should be! SA perfected the 8 man scrum for example!

It kills me to see the terrible running too – in the last game the Bok backline did virtually the EXACT same thing every time – its madness! There is no inciciveness or imagination – and no one can tell me we dont have the players to play like that – WE DO!

Example – I think the first offload was Frans to JdV in the 82nd minute – which led to Jean losing it and a turnover :-(

But – as we all know – the pack must “set the platform” for the backs. The pack is currently very inexperienced and not dominant. On top of which a senior player like Bekker had a shocker (by his own high standards).

Thats is what White did so well – fix the forwards.
That is what Mallet did – amazing pack – Venter, Labuschagne, Teichmann, Andrews, Rassie, Os, Chris Russow, Pagel, Kempson, Tommy Laubsher, Skinstad (at the end).

And how good did those Bok backlines look?

Point to prove – but not tomorrow – HM needs to adapt his Rugby thinking”! and expand the game plan.
How can he be so one sited, if the rest of the world can see it.. and the worse thing is when they don’t succeed in the game plan there is no fallback. Look at the Bull’s when the sharks started bullying them they crumbled… When Argies bullied SA we had no Idea what to do. But to beat Aus you need to destroy them at the scrums, when they are on the backfoot they make countless error, and explode.. That’s exactly how Ireland beat them in the WC dominated them from the front…. Think the same for the Kiwis – I just wish we could have played them in the WC – think that would have written a different storey all together.

  • 96.RAI8: Reply to this comment

@bokfan,would you care to mention a few good things that Pdivvy did for the Boks? He was gifted a masterclass team from Jake White, and got no real results out. However, I must agree with you on HM, I too believe he will do great things with the Boks, he just needs to hit his head a few times to realise he needs to make some changes.

Some easy wins for the Springboks include the following moves:

    1) offloads in the tackle – If we practise this week in and week out in training and in games, we will learn when to offload and when not to. Healthy offloading is the cornerstone of any good attacking team.

    2) Inside ball – if our backline is moving the ball through the hands, it can often catch an opposition off guard for someone to run against the grain and take the inside ball.

    3) Variety from our flyhalf – this will make our flyhalf more difficult to predict and will mean that oppositions will have a harder time preparing for us. As it currently stands, we are one of the easiest teams in the world to prepare for, because we are so one-dimensional and predictable.

    4) Variety in our game plan – same reasons as above. There is nothing wrong with the kick chase game plan, except for the fact that it’s the only game plan we have. A one size fits all approach is not the approach of a world class team. To be the best, we should have a few more tricks up our sleeve. There is a time to use kick chase and a time to use other tactics.

    5) A fetcher – self-explanatory as to why we need this.

    6) Pressure defense – We are a young-ish team at the moment and there are a lot of guys in a green jersey who, although talented, have been a teensy bit outmuscled and schooled by more experienced opponents. The Argies as an example schooled our forwards at the breakdown in Mendoza. Let’s turn things around and put the pressure on the opposition. When we don’t have the ball, this is a perfect opportunity to make life difficult for the opposition. Let’s throw our forwards all over them and force them into mistakes. Rush defense combined with drift defense. Aggressive D is one of the quickest wins we can get.

    7) Competing at the lineout – why not?

    8) With all this talk about playing a kicking game, we have on too many occassions put pressure on ourselves by kicking down the oppositions throat and letting them counter attack… How about we try finding touch?

    9) Guys like Quade Cooper and Sonny Bill Williams are going to throw offloads. Guaranteed. Let’s be aware of that in advance and have JDV or Habana (or anyone for that matter) hanging nearby when the tackle is made. When the offload eventually comes, go for the intercept… If they don’t throw an offload, then at least we have found a way to stop them offloading.

There are many many more tactics than kick and chase. Above are only a few that I would expect from my Springboks.
