Lions roar loudest at Loftus
8 Sep 2012
JON CARDINELLI writes the Golden Lions scored four tries in their 32-23 win against the Blue Bulls on Saturday.
It was a match where the Lions’ adventurous attitude was rewarded, and where the Bulls’ poor defence and abysmal goal-kicking was punished.
The Bulls led 8-3 for much of the first half, but some wayward goal-kicking by Louis Fouche prevented the hosts from building on that lead. Fouche missed two kicks at goal and also sent a drop attempt wide. If one is to consider the final scoreline, you would have to say that these misses were incredibly costly.
So too were the lapses in concentration during periods before and after half-time. Lions wing Deon Helberg rounded off some enterprising play in the dying minutes of the first half, and centre Alwyn Hollenbach crossed the line early in the second. They were scores that changed the complexion of the game, as the Lions went to a 15-8 lead.
While Fouche had struggled with his goal-kicking, Lions flyhalf Elton Jantjies also battled at times with his accuracy. The Lions were clearly on top in the second half, but Jantjies failed to convert kickable penalties into points. Replacement Jaco Taute also had a long-range shot that fell short of the crossbar.
A mistake by Lionel Mapoe allowed the Bulls a turnover, and this culminated in a try for Bulls centre Francois Venter. The ensuing conversion brought the scores level at 15-15.
But some brilliance by Mapoe and Jantjies would see the Lions hitting back immediately. Mapoe made the initial break, and from the subsequent phase, Jantjies produced a deft chip over the defence. The Lions flyhalf regathered before delivering a great inside ball to Taute, who then ran 30m to score.
On the 60-minute mark, Jantjies added another penalty that took the Lions out to a 10-point lead. The Bulls stayed in touch with a penalty and try of their own, but a missed conversion by Fouche meant the Lions held a slender two-point advantage as the match approached its climax.
The Bulls’ desperation began to tell, as they made some elementary errors that effectively killed off any chance of a fightback. The Lions continued to come at the hosts, and after having one try disallowed, it was Mapoe who finished in the right-hand corner to bank the bonus point.
The result sees the Lions moving up the Currie Cup table, while the Bulls remain in last place.

@grant10-52: Not ‘we’ dude….Heyneke Meyer chooses Morne Steyn and in the end, as with all Bok coaches he will live or die as a Springbok coach by his decisions.
Heyneke wont see the next world cup. He will be long gone by then, if not already by the end of next year. He has a head made of brick, and quite obviously refuses to admit his selections are fallible or that certain players are past their best.
What he doesn’t realise is that the tactic of sticking his head in the ground and ignoring the problem hasn’t helped any Bok coach survive so far. I think he might turn out to be one of the worst ever along with Rudolph Straueli and Harry Viljoen.

@papaown-61: Yes. I must admit being one of those who has called for HM to be coach in the past, and was very pleased at his appointment.
What I did not credit him with was the ability to make a complete hash of things from the get go, dish out new Springbok colors to 11 players in his first 5 games and shout into his radio handset like a raving lunatic on a mixture of steroids and speedball.
I am afraid he has begun to show himself up very early on. Unfortunately the names Victor Matfield, Bakkies Botha, Fourie Du Preez, Danie Rossouw and Gary Botha are not around to win games for him despite his poor coaching acumen.

This Andries Coetsee is absolute class got pure rugby ingenuity oozing out of every pore in his rugby Intelligent body and these DUMB f’ng MORONIC Thick idiotic Springbok coaches select outright imbeciles to represent the national team.
This Lionel Mapoe would also offer at lest 50% more go forward in a Bok jersey than we saw from the morons on display today.
As for a Jantjies / Morne Steyn comparison, there simply isn’t one, they not even REMOTELY in the same league
Morne Steyn belongs in Kindergarten rugby league compared to Jantjies who is at least 20 rungs up on the ladder of rugby pivot ability.

Great try by the Bulls but came from Lions kicking away possesion! Why revert back to what u were NOT doing to give you the lead in the last minutes of the game??
Continue with the posession based game and leave the kicking!
Bulls can’t score if they don’t have the ball
