Wallabies lose Genia for season
9 Sep 2012
Wallabies scrumhalf Will Genia has been ruled out of rugby for six months due to a ruptured ACL in his knee.
Genia was on crutches following Saturday’s Test against the Springboks, and a subsequent trip to the hospital for scans and tests confirmed that he won’t play again in 2012.
Nick Phipps is expected to start in Genia’s place against Argentina next week, while Brett Sheehan will join the squad as scrumhalf cover.
Genia is the third senior Wallabies player to be sidelined in recent months. James Horwill (hamstring) and David Pocock (knee) are unavailable for the Rugby Championship because of serious injuries.
Lock Sitaleki Timani also picked up a hamstring injury on Saturday and is unlikely to play Argentina next week.
The good news is that versatile back James O’Connor will make his return to the squad in the next week. O’Connor is expected to play in the Test against the Boks in Pretoria.

Unlucky dragon, though he’s been injury free for a long time. Nick Phipps has a sharper pass arguably

This increases the Wallabies already pretty good chances of losing to the Pumas.

Backline is going to struggle even worse without Genia.
Phipps is a plodder, and while Sheehan has a lot of mongrel, the guy is 34 and was just about ready to retire to France at the end of the season.
Deans must feel like a twat now for telling Nic White he wasn’t required for the Rugby Championship. He was the form Aus scrumhalf this year and should have been at least the bench backup to Genia from the start, but took the hint as a chance to get an off-season operation to be fresh for next season.
Mind you, as long as Barnes continues to kick all possession straight back to the opposition fullbacks, it doesn’t really matter what the rest of the backline looks like.

doctors know best, so why argue with them.

@kaksioek-8: Palu could take his position at 8 as he is also injured.

Another casualty to the 2012 season, so many top players absent from the top SH competitions, so sad, this season has been lesser for it.
Have your say
