Lions keep winning formula

The Golden Lions have made no changes to their starting line-up for the Currie Cup clash against the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein on Saturday.

Head coach Johan Ackermann has retained the run-on side used in the victory over the Blue Bulls in Pretoria last weekend. This means Jaco Taute will remain on the bench.

There are two changes among the reserves as prop Ruan Dreyer and lock Ettiene Oosthuizen get call-ups in place of CJ van der Linde and flank Jaco Kriel respectively. Michael Rhodes will provide second row and loose forward cover.

Golden Lions – 15 Andries Coetzee, 14 Deon Helberg, 13 Lionel Mapoe, 12 Alwyn Hollenbach, 11 Ruan Combrinck, 10 Elton Jantjies, 9 Michael Bondesio, 8 Warren Whiteley, 7 Willie Britz, 6 Cobus Grobbelaar, 5 Franco van der Merwe, 4 Hendrik Roodt, 3 Jacobie Adriaanse, 2 Callie Visagie, 1 JC Janse van Rensburg (c).
Subs: 16 Bandise Maku, 17 Ruan Dreyer, 18 Etienne Oosthuizen, 19 Michael Rhodes, 20 Ross Cronje, 21 Butch James, 22 Jaco Taute.

I wouldn’t have changed that team either. The balance, particularly in the backline, was great. Debutant Helberg had an excellent game on the wing, and Combrink on the other wing was useful too. Hollenbach and Mapoe have the makings of a fantastic centre combo and Jantjes and Bondesio probably had their best game together on Saturday. Tough to have to choose between Coetzee and Taute at 15, as each offers something different but equally good. Taute is big and strong and commits defenders, while Coetzee is fast and agile and steps like a young Cullen.

Amongst the forwards there is still the need for a big bruising ball carrier, with Strauss missing. Whiteley is great, but he’s a different type of player. And Willie Brits has not really convinced me yet – made some elementary mistakes, and seems a tad slow off the mark. Really impressed by the (relatively) lightweight tight five though, and particularly the front row. JC van Rensburg has developed into a world class prop despite not being the biggest bloke in the pack. And to have a guy like Maku come on in the second half is any coach’s dream.

I’m hoping for another big statement this weekend.

@katman-3: Combrink is the new Earl Rose in that team, keep an eye on him. I would rather have Volmink on the wing.

    wow
when you put it that way it makes me wonder why this team hasn’t won four or five super titles already.
