Meyer defiant on Morné
12 Sep 2012
Morne Steyn will start at flyhalf against the All Blacks in Dunedin.
Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer has selected Steyn and made just two changes to the side beaten by Australia in Perth.
Francois Louw starts in the specialist openside role, with Marcell Coetzee among the substitutes.
‘The New Zealanders are good on the ground which is why we decided to go for a specialist openside flank in Francois,’ said Meyer. ‘Marcell has been very good this season and has played a lot of rugby, but in this match we feel he will be more useful as an impact option.’
Meanwhile, Flip van der Merwe starts at lock, Andries Bekker is recalled to the match 22 and tighthead prop Jannie du Plessis has been declared fit. Toulon-based lock Bakkies Botha won’t be involved and the issue with Botha is believed to be medical insurance – a similar situation which hampered Fourie du Preez’s return to Test rugby this season.
Johan Goosen is again among the substitutes and there’s a match squad call-up for Juan de Jongh and Dean Greyling.
Steyn kicked all 18 points in the Boks’ 18-5 win against the All Blacks in Port Elizabeth a year ago and holds the record of most points against the All Blacks when he scored all 31 points in the Boks’ win in Bloemfontein in 2009.
However, the Boks, with Steyn at flyhalf, have not enjoyed the kind of success that warrants continued selection. Steyn has played flyhalf in the Boks’ last 30 Tests and have won just 16.
South Africa’s rivalry with New Zealand is considered the fiercest in the game, but the All Blacks have been dominant in the professional era. Pre-isolation the Boks held a 21-16 winning advantage, but since international readmission in 1992 the All Blacks have won 30 and the Boks just 13. One Test has been drawn, 18-18 in Auckland in 1994.
Springboks – 15 Zane Kirchner, 14 Bryan Habana, 13 Jean de Villiers (c), 12 Frans Steyn, 11 Francois Hougaard, 10 Morné Steyn, 9 Ruan Pienaar, 8 Duane Vermeulen, 7 Willem Alberts, 6 Francois Louw, 5 Juandre Kruger, 4 Flip van der Merwe, 3 Jannie du Plessis, 2 Adriaan Strauss, 1 Beast Mtawarira.
Subs: 16 Tiaan Liebenberg, 17 Dean Greyling, 18 Andries Bekker, 19 Marcell Coetzee, 20 Johan Goosen, 21 Juan de Jongh, 22 Pat Lambie.

Mate your swearing does not make you sound tough, it achieves directly the opposite.
You come across as paranoid, vulnerable and emotionally unstable.
Why don’t you go to the archives and check for yourself that Dawn announced the name here on the blog? Come on son, you know the DOB
But don’t blame her for announcing it. Blame me for remembering it.
Come on, you want to take me on, direct your anger at me. Leave her out of this.
Again, what is real cause for your irrational fit?

Indeed Sharif himself was an Idols contestant.
However his rendition of Al Jarreau’s we are the world resulted in the early retirement for Mara Louw.

@Marty-432: It’s not only because of a fetcher. Inefficient clearing out is definitely not because of any lack of a fetcher. It comes down to technique and conditioning in my opinion. Little things that go back to rugby 101 basics like acknowledging that if you go into a ruck lower than your opposite man you will almost always push him backwards. Conditioning to ensure your guys get there as quickly as possible every time and most importantly PLAYING AS A UNIT. That is non-negotiable for any pack who set out to be the best in the world. Guys arriving in drips and drabs trying to clear a ruck out on their own will never work.
Little things too – the NZ’ers a few years back were taught to count to 3 before releasing the ball when they went to ground. The idea obviously being that it allowed slightly more time for their own men to get there and was just less than the average time leading to a penalty for holding on.
Even things like ball placement play a roll. If you see you’re getting rucked over then do the smart thing and instead of placing the ball right in front of your stomach , reach out and put it as far back as possible so when you’re forwards are backtracking you still have some leeway.

I wanted to know whether she is serious about pursuing a career in music,since we were talking about music/JB’s concert.
Did I ask for a name? No I did not, so your argument falls flat.
Any reasonable reader would follow that line of reasoning.

@Sheriff-453: Listen, I’m not here to talk to you. I’ve made that clear. You are avoidable internet rubbish.
But for the sake of the unfortunate audience here, I’m not the first person you tried to “out” here on keo. You did the same to Dawn, and to Harry Beachwalker, and god knows who else when I wasn’t watching.
So spare me your indignant bravado. You’re a dirty little rat. And I don’t like rats.
Now I’d prefer if you didn’t address me again.

@Yetirat-455:
Yip, SA players just don’t seem to do the basic things right.
Look at Habana still running with the ball in his right hand on the left wing.
Forwards still going into contact with the ball carrying arm.

@Dawn-457:
I cannot get the post if I don’t have the DOB – what is so hard to understand about that? Let him get it, he has the DOB!!!
Your failure to produce the post confirms that I am correct.
You need not be scared of your ‘friend’ who is throwing these weird fits. He is just unhappy with the general content of my posts in general. I think I know why.
However, the coward won’t come out and say that. Instead he attempts to discredit me and in his attempts does not consider the facts.
I remember all kinds of useless information.

The DOB is irrelevant.
You seem convinced that I did this, so go get the evidence.

If only we could win just to keep those papbekke quiet.

@nama1-465: i see marcell coetzee has adopted schalk burger’s manouvre of turning his back to the opposition when going into contact meaning he won’t make any metres over the advantage line as he can’t drive with his legs

What a bizarre conclusion.
That is what happens when you read and interpret things that’s not actually meant for you.
He was comfortable to say that she is a ‘budding’ musician; SA Idols is one avenue to take it further – although as I stated I don’t like that route.
Why would I need to track her? I could simply pick up the phone and ask Transformation for her name if I needed it, for e.g. if we are planning to go to Katzy’s again.
So no, you have no leg to stand on.
12 Sep 2012, 15:38 pm

@Dawn-474:
I think he meant the Maginot Line.
12 Sep 2012, 15:38 pm
@nama1-465: It is often just basics. Those are guys who are so strong in some areas that they get away with those little inefficiencies at the lower levels because they are so vastly superior in other facets of play.
Seeing Spies, with all his strength running towards someone in a one-on-one situation and not even attempting a hand-off is just criminal. JDV too, just holds on and goes straight to ground. If he used one hand to hand-off and slow the tackle and one hand to offload in the few extra seconds he’s bought we’d be onto something! Those skills are areas that the All Blacks are light years ahead of the Boks on.

Interesting article in the NZ herald.
Heyneke Meyer calls them “soft moments”, lapses of discipline which can change games and turn coaches against their walkie-talkies.
Having attempted to throttle his two-way radio during the Springboks’ loss against Australian in Perth during one particularly daft act from one of his players – a shoulder charge by prop Tendai Mtawarira – he hopes his side will keep them to a minimum against the All Blacks in Dunedin on Saturday.
And that explains his conservative selections today. Meyer has made only two changes and one of them was forced – lock Flip van der Merwe in for the suspended Eben Etzebeth and Francois Louw replacing Marcell Coetzee as openside flanker.
Morne Steyn retains his place at first-five despite his largely negative approach to the game and the challenge of 20-year-old Johan Goosen, with Zane Kirchner again named at fullback ahead of 21-year-old Pat Lambie.
Steyn had an ordinary Super Rugby season with the Bulls and there is a feeling that he and the Springboks are struggling to keep pace with the modern game. Kicking the ball away doesn’t reap the benefits of two or three years ago and the All Blacks have counter-attacking threats in their back three which could send Meyer’s blood pressure even higher than it was in Perth last Saturday.
However, he refused to accept that Steyn needed to change his game. Prepare, then, for more of the same from the Boks.
“I’m a big believer that a guy should stick to his strengths,” he said. “I think Morne is a great player in his own right and he is a guy who doesn’t make a lot of mistakes. I don’t think he should change the way he plays, I think it’s more the outside backs who must use their opportunities. It’s great to have two slightly different types of 10s because then you can play different types of games. Morne has done well for the Boks and I can’t see why he must change.
“I believe you shouldn’t push a guy like Goosen too early. Coming off the bench against Australia [on debut] I think he did well. But against New Zealand… he hasn’t even played a test match in South Africa. We have four Under-20 players in our team now. I’ve always believed in bringing in youngsters but you need to bring them in slowly. I think we’re on the right track with Johan and Morne there.”
Louw’s selection was an attempt to negate the influence of a loose forward trio which includes skipper Richie McCaw, one of the best players ever, according to Meyer.
“I’ve got the biggest respect for a guy like Richie McCaw. I think he’s probably the best player to have ever played rugby. And he’s a leader from the front.
“Every game has its own personality and I always feel that there are one or two big moments that can change a game. I must firstly say that there’s a huge difference in playing the All Blacks in South Africa than playing them here. We don’t have a good record against them in New Zealand. If you want to win then you have to be tactically astute, your defence has to be impeccable and there needs to be no soft moments in your discipline.”
Jannie du Plessis has been named at tighthead prop, despite his hamstring strain.
Juan de Jongh, a specialist centre, has been named on the reserves bench as cover for captain Jean de Villiers, who has played every test this year and is beginning to feel the pinch.
South Africa team to play the All Blacks in Dunedin on Saturday, kick-off 7.35pm: Zane Kirchner, Bryan Habana, Jean de Villiers (c), Frans Steyn, Francois Hougaard, Morne Steyn, Ruan Pienaar, Duane Vermeulen, Willem Alberts, Francois Louw, Juandre Kruger, Flip van der Merwe, Jannie du Plessis, Adriaan Strauss, Tendai Mtawarira. Reserves: Tiaan Liebenberg, Dean Greyling, Andries Bekker, Marcell Coetzee, Johan Goosen, Juan de Jongh, Patrick Lambie

They can support the AB’s because of the brand of rugby they play but why sing another countries national anthem.
Makes no sense.
12 Sep 2012, 15:44 pm
@Dudeson77-483:
To be fair I threw my remote at the wall during that gemors.
Meyer is well within his rights to abuse a couple of walkie talkies.

@katman-464:
Your preferences are meaningless to me.
Your refusal to go to the archives on the date that should be known to you, proves my point.
But that’s not really what this is about hey?
Btw – you just another ordinary bloke, there is no reason for you to think someone will ‘try you out’ ; you’re losing it mate …
12 Sep 2012, 15:46 pm
@Jeraldjay-485:
I draw the line when they abuse and spit on our players.
12 Sep 2012, 15:46 pm
Bomfok Hoerskool – unusual name.
Must be in potchefstroom.
12 Sep 2012, 15:46 pm
@gunther-486: I flipped my couch!!
I too will strangle my walkie if my kak game plan isnt working
12 Sep 2012, 15:48 pm
@Dudeson77-483: I just don’t understand it, if Morne was storng defensivley and had a great boot then at least I could understand the logic to a degree but he is probably the worst defensive no10 in world rugby, it’s like having Braam v Straaten as your 10 and then taking away his ability to tackle.
12 Sep 2012, 15:49 pm
@Dawn-469:
You won’t make for a good lawyer Dawn.
The DOB is key as it directs the search for the post. Really, it’s that simple.
The appetite is low to do that as you know very well that I am right.
12 Sep 2012, 15:50 pm
@Jeraldjay-485: they can sing whatever national anthem they want as long as they don’t vloek out team and make trouble with other supporters…there were no incidents, both at the Sevens and Tri-nations game.
12 Sep 2012, 15:51 pm
@Skeppie-491: agreed! he is utterly ****!!!
He cannot tackle to save is mother’s life! HM has totally lost the plot with this one! Maybe his in love.
12 Sep 2012, 15:53 pm
197.poppa69
“ABs will win this game because of their counter rucking skills and the quick offloads to supporting forwards on the edge of the fringes.. ”
I think Poppa is spot on here. This is exactly where we will lose it and the AB will win it.
I wonder if we will see a situation again where the ball is available for the SH only for Pienaar to kick it back into the ruck and then for the AB to counter ruck us off the ball and turn the ball over.
12 Sep 2012, 15:54 pm
@Transformation-473: Noticed that with Schalk after his neck injury
Gunshy.Please say it isn,t so with MC.Maybe it is because he
makes so many tackles and is hurting.
12 Sep 2012, 15:54 pm
@Sheriff-487: Then why do you carry on doing it to people? The problem lies with you, pal. The internet has given crazies like you an opportunity to flex your creepy little cyber-stalker muscles. And here’s the fcked up bit: you think it grows you in people’s estimation. You think it makes you powerful. But you’re messed up in the head.
If it’s no big deal, then just refrain from ever mentioning people’s names, or their family’s names, or their places of work here like it’s some kind of blackmail bargaining chip. Only seriously fcked up individuals do that.
12 Sep 2012, 15:54 pm
@gunther-488:
If it’s the older generation I can live with it but the younger ones are the worst of the lot.
12 Sep 2012, 15:57 pm
The All Blacks must have been delighted to hear Morne Steyn is gonna start. I thought HM said he will give a guy 2 chances and then he is out. Andries Bekker had a bad game, HM dropped him. But Morne, he has had 6 chances now. Nothing! I love it how HM said “I don’t think he should change the way he plays, I think it’s more the outside backs who must use their opportunities.”
The problem we having is because of the way he plays!
12 Sep 2012, 15:57 pm
@Dawn-469:
Dawn on a serious note: I think you suffer from bloggers’ fatigue.
You seem to be having difficulty what happens or happened on a platform of this nature.
Can I suggest a break from the blog? Mingle again a bit with the colleagues and with friends over the weekend.
