KeoTV: Steyn as a sub?

Steyn can add more value for the Bulls in the Currie Cup and less damage to the Boks as a sub.

@Finfan – Great post.. the worst thing is it’s so true….
same goes with Flip and Nik Naks…

He was a good Sub during the BL series due to the need at that time… i.e. a good kicker…

Time of the change, we need our talented youngsters to start on home turf. For that to happen all of them need to get 30min game time tomorrow. Goosen, Lambie and JdJ should all come on in the 2nd half for 30min.

Time for a new era of Boks to come through.

Is it just me, or does Ryan look like he moonlights for the Village People in that jacket. Definitely not something a self-respecting rugby reporter should wear, but then again, we do live in the era of Pink Bulls’ jerseys …

Oh Lordy be! Let’s have a look at kicking percentages before we jump out of the boerewors section of the braai into the teak one. I don’t really want to endure another Lions type series (before the last one I think) when Prime Ugly Jenkins booted themselves to a win against the marginally better Boks who didn’t have a recognised kicker.

That I think led us to Louis Koen and Braam van Straaten.

    C’mon Gwanty10; where’s your namesake?

  • 16.Puma: Reply to this comment

Then at home we also have:

Jordaan, Whitehead, Taute, Le Roux and many more coming through. Also like Provnice’s scrummie Groom and their inside centre, just forgot his name. We have plenty talent for sure.

Sub, the guy should not be in the team…… would not even trust him to work in SUB way….
Really clutching at straws to write articles.. wast of time.

    @Puma-16:

It’s about balancing out the squad with enough experience but also encouraging the right youngsters to get onto the field and express themselves.
Right now there are too many youngsters and too little savvy veterans with no established combinations.

  • 20.puff: Reply to this comment

Cheetahs hooker playing with Sharks props.
Stormers newbie playing with Bulls lock.
Vermeulen playing with Sharks loosies – all test greenhorns.
Louw only coming into the squad recently – but has some experience and a definite improvement over Potgieter.
Pienaar playing with Morne – have known each other forever so no real excuses can be made there.
Hougaard not in his preferred position.
Frans and JDV only playing together for first time this season.
JDV out of position and looks tired and in need of a rest.
Habana out of position but the best performing Bok in last test.

  • 21.puff: Reply to this comment

Once you get the Sharks front row
    the Stormers locks
Burger and Vermeulen operating with Brussow – all who have played together before.
Du Preez in to guide Goosen.
Habana and JP back in their preferred positions guiding Lambie at 15.
Frans back with Jacques Fourie – the best match-winning centre combo with Fourie exceptional at defensive organising.
It will be a different story.

Then the likes of Etzebeth, Vermeulen, Goosen and Lambie – all new test players who deserve to be backed – will be backed by experience and established combos.
Plus the likes of Bismark, Bekker and Frans Steyn will have the opportunity to grow in positions they were kept out of for the last 4 years.

    It really isn’t rocket science.
Meyer has had his work cut out for him with so much departing experience and so many injuries.
Yes, he can be criticised for
his lack of adventure and risk in not starting Goosen and Lambie
or for not giving Jantjies game time from off the bench
or for not having Brussow in his earlier squads
But a bit more perspective is needed, me thinks.
Thus year Boks are on a hiding to nothing.
The positive is some youngsters are being introduced into the set-up.
And, hopefully, with some vets returning sooner rather than later, things will take an upward curve.

What for? In the off chance that we are in the lead and need to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory?

  • 24.Soda: Reply to this comment

@grant10-5: I watched the film, Brave, on the plane last night and Meyer wasn’t in it. There was however a toilet and for a second I thought he’d made a cameo appearance.

  • 25.Philou: Reply to this comment

Steyn’s problem at the moment is more decision-making. He is more than able to play as a “running flyhalf” – that’s how he started his career – but years of playing in the pocket has stifled his creativity. A possible solution would be to release him to the Bulls for the rest of the Currie Cup, but with a strong directive to Meyer’s buds there to give him a “licence to run”. But that would require lateral thinking …

  • 26.wpallday: Reply to this comment

In two minds about Meyer and his selection policies…
On the one hand he is backing his players ,something that I admire, however on the other-hand he is only backing Bulls players!!

Morne Steyn should be subjected to the same policies Ruan Pienaar was.

@Soda-24: sjoe, that’s quite harsh hey?

  • 28.Jake_White: Reply to this comment

Does HM touch himself to photos of Steyn ? HE is destroying mornes career. Let Morne have a break, go back to the Bulls and re-address his game. Refind his form. Give some game time to Lambie and Goosen and then once Goosen has more experience, Goosen at 10 with Lambie at 15.

How many times do you have to fail, before you are dropped ?

If i had to make a mistake once at work – i am gone.

Catch a wakeup HM. Start with Goosen, keep Morne on bench in case Johan doesnt cope. tell the players to run everything in Soweto, and pick Aplon at 14, with lambie 15, Goosen at 10, de jongh at 13 with Frans 12. Hougaard back to 9, Bryan 11. – We persist with a gameplan thats not working…. make it work, or drop it. If the Boks dish up more of the same nonesense this weekend, and still cant revert to plan B – that will be the last game i watch this year.

    @puff-22: @Jake_White-28:

Agree with all your comments, ironically I think the backline will be sorted with Goosen, Taute, JFourie, FdP (mentoring role) all coming back or through the ranks. Keep FHougaard, FSteyn, Habs and JPP

Game plan can be more easily adapted to suit these players. Big problem is forwards, we are looking shy of a decent tight 5 let alone a back up tight5 due to attrition and game time. Looking especially worrying at prop. If you cannot compete or lay a platform it doesnt matter if you have game plan a,b,c etc ..

Can anyone tell me is Peter dVilliers the french prop still involved ??

    @Doughnut-29:
The first change of personnel we should consider is that of the coaching team.
Although I agree that some glaring omissions is being made w.r.t.. selections, I think that a proper coaching team could be successful even with the current players.

  • 32.Doughnut: Reply to this comment

@TooMuchRugby-31: I reckon HM has been screwed by SARU, passed over when he should have been appointed then very delayed announcement this time. Should have been staright after RWC so he could recruit quality assistants.

    F’n Loubscher and Graan … ?????

  • 33.Jeez: Reply to this comment

HM shouldnt waste time and pick MS on the bench. Whats the point anyway if Lambie is in the match 22 when Goosen is first choice? HM should start looking for the number 2 flyhalf and keep him on the bench. Be it Jantjies or Lambie. If Jantjies is in the match 22 you dont need MS. Jantjies is a great kicker.

  • 34.Spiesisworthless1: Reply to this comment

Yes, the coaching team is a complete disaster. If Meyer himself had some quality assistants in his corner he wouldn’t always be on the verge of a stroke in the coaching box. Van Graan and Loubscher OUT. And LOL at the title of this post, Mourne Steyn as an impact player or sub? He’s got nothing.

Morne needs to add more to his game – take the ball up with acceleration; take a gap; put others into space; kick 80% + again; tackle effectively. Very few sportsmen overall shown the aptitude to re-invent themselves in order to stay relevant. @ age 29 there’s time on his side. The easy way out is to sulk off to Japan after the Goose takes over. The power of self-belief eludes us all @ some point but it is the stuff of champions

  • 39.outrightrugby: Reply to this comment

There is no role for Morne Steyn in professional rugby. He was a great, but he’s a nothing now. With the 10′s we have on offer, Heyneke has thrown away 1 year of his 4 year tenure.
