Sharks smash woeful WP
15 Sep 2012
RYAN VREDE saw the Sharks comprehensively beat Western Province 43-27 in difficult conditions at Kings Park.
Durban was battered with a sustained torrential downpour which completely waterlogged the surface. This made any sort of skill beyond a high punt or forward-based phase play near impossible and consequently adversely affected the quality of the match. The Sharks mastered the conditions while WP sunk. Furthermore, their discipline was atrocious, with Jebb Sinclair and Tyrone Holmes red carded for punching and Wilhelm van der Sluys (harshly) yellow carded.
Bombs were blended with grinding forward play, the Sharks better at taking advantage of the infringements forced through this method, Meyer Bosman kicking five penalties to go with four conversions for a 23 point haul.
Despite dominating large passages of play, WP simply never threatened to regularly break down a physical and accurate Sharks defensive unit. Their rolling maul got some purchase, but beyond that their tactical kicking game lacked the consistent precision to drive them into good field positions and their ball-in-hand play was uninspiring. The Sharks absorbed the pressure well, refusing to undermine their cause by becoming loose and profited as a result.
Bosman and Demetri Catrakilis traded three pointers to get the scoreboard going before Sharks flank Jacques Botes finished a slick move. The match meandered through dour passages thereafter, Bosman and Catrakilis continuing their boot war to leave the Sharks 16-12 ahead at the break.
Bosman banked six more points after the restart and the odds swung in the Sharks’ favour when Sinclair decked Jean Deysel to earn an early shower. Keegan Daniel scored shortly thereafter, sniping through the middle of a ruck to score.
WP’s rebuttal was good, Louis Schreuder driving over from close range after the defensive line had been depleted, Catrakilis adding the extras. But that good work was undone when Holmes jabbed Botes, who rubbed salt into the wounds by scoring shortly thereafter.
Schreuder intercepted and sprinted 80m to score, giving WP faint hope of what would have been a remarkable result in the circumstances. But Joe Pietersen missed the conversion that would have put them in contention for a draw. The game ended with a five-man WP scrum conceding a penalty try.

@CoachPete-201: agree Coach, shows how blerry good Carter is.. Cruden, while great in super rugby, still isnt able to control a game at test level…not sure I remember him even trying to take the line on last night, cant remember any skip passes to the outside centre either.. but must credit the bok forwards also for their tencaity and think this also contributed..
C Smith has been my favourite AB since his test career started… A Smith is still raw and needs to improve his kicking game, but his pass with Carter there I think will see our backline hit their straps…( I blame Foster already, look what W Smith did with the chiefs backline, a lot of that SBWs too, but the difference is remarkable)
fark, Mrs Smith must have been a busy lady
16 Sep 2012, 01:14 am
@Flametop-202: that is a truly tragic story
16 Sep 2012, 01:24 am
Yep, really sad.
I know there will be some SA players mourning.
16 Sep 2012, 01:34 am
@Flametop-205: hey Fame top Howzit
where have you been?
16 Sep 2012, 01:40 am
@poppa69-203:
Come on now Pops. Give Cruden a chance. Can’t expect him at this stage of his career to be at the level where Carter is at the near end of his career.
Of course he’ll make mistakes but he has been doing well in his short international career so far.
How many game has the AB lost with him as pivot?
Conrad Smith, Jerome Kaino, Mills Muliaina, Jerry Collins my favourite AB of the recent past.
Back in the days: Bernie Frasier, Dave Loveridge, Buck Shelford and the MASTER of them all, Graham Mourie, if only for his convictions re the 1981 Bok tour.
16 Sep 2012, 01:50 am
@nama1-207: agree, and am still a fan Nama, I think he did go better with Smith as halfback… I do think also that the combo with Nonu may take some time, but our starting backline was the old hurricanes one that never functioned too well either… think it highlights the lack of space between super rugby and test match rugby. he will learn and continue to improve I am sure… our coaching staff are still not filling me with confidence either
I remember the Frasier, Wilson wing duo for Wellington and the ABs..Buck was and is a legend, always will be… has what we kiwis call Mana in bucketloads..
all those players you mention are quality..

I remember a story about a corner in one of your stadiums called, “Bernie’s corner” because Bernie Frasier(sp) scored 4 tries there.
What stadium was it and does it still go by that name?
@CoachPete-211:
Even at prop he would’ve performed better than our fly half.
16 Sep 2012, 02:10 am
Howit Coach, yeah should drop in more.
Busy busy, Boks rebuilding, and timing it nicely as always for next RWC.

16 Sep 2012, 02:15 am
Nama
athletic park is now a retirement village apparently.
16 Sep 2012, 02:15 am
@nama1-213:
Hi Nama
Bernies corner was left corner at Atheletic park. Stadium is gone and now houses are on the property.
I watched many games at that park. The Millard stand was a horror. Open, high with an ugly angle and it shook with all the wind. Smoking allowed and you could invade the pitch to congratulate the All Blacks after the game.
The old days.

Ebony and Ivory they were known as.

Weepee poeftas got owned by Sharks today. No wonder the poeftas from the Cape either support the Crusaders or the Sharks these days. It Is not a case of shoulder chips or inferiority complexes but simply a matter of being too ashamed to be associated with the WP rugby union.
16 Sep 2012, 02:45 am
@poppa69-216: @Hurricane-217:
Thanks.
Bernie was one of my favorites as I said earlier.
What with hi mo and all.
He is still alive, I hope. Must be around 55-60 now.

16 Sep 2012, 02:54 am
@CoachPete-221: No chip or inferiority complex then I take it.
16 Sep 2012, 02:56 am
@kwas-219:
Really???
We are still 3rd on the log with three home games to play. There is still a very, very good chance that we will top the log at the end of the round robin matches.
Remember that only two teams will fall out before the knock out.
You are a Cheetah supporter, not so or is that another Kwas?
16 Sep 2012, 02:57 am
@kwas-222:
No i am just your basic regular WP supporter in California
16 Sep 2012, 03:03 am
@CoachPete-224: so did you vote Arnie into his 2nd term? That plonker royally fkd up your beautiful state.
@nama1-223: there is only 1 kwas and that is Griekwas!

They’re still behind WP on the log, no?
16 Sep 2012, 03:11 am
@nama1-226: only a matter of time before the Kimberley kwassies overtake the Weepee poeftas. No matter what you say or do – Kwas will always rule this planet.
16 Sep 2012, 03:12 am
@kwas-225:
No governer can win in California

Where are you?
16 Sep 2012, 03:24 am
@CoachPete-228: that’s sad, coach. Who would have thought the mighty CA – once the 5th largest economy in the world – would end up bankrupt.
Our black gold keeps us steady up north from you guys. As long as you’ll allow us to snake our pipelines through your vineyards!

16 Sep 2012, 03:50 am
@CoachPete-240: Us Canadians are too conservative to own any other nation. Conservatism is what keeps us prosperous through the lean times elsewhere.
16 Sep 2012, 03:53 am
@CoachPete-242: I am in Calgary. Not working directly in the oil industry, but indirectly benefiting from the fairytale that is the oil sands of Alberta.
16 Sep 2012, 03:59 am
Oh man, watching Lion King with the kids now and it makes me homesick. Especially when my kiddies are born and bred Canadian and don’t have a clue about the beauty of Africa. You can take the Kwas out of Kimberly, but you can’t take Africa out of the Kwas.

The messiah has finally admitted his royal cockup:
Meyer admits to Steyn mistake
Dunedin – Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer admitted that he may have made a mistake in letting Morne Steyn retain the kicking duties despite succeeding with just one out of five shots at goal in South Africa’s 21-11 defeat in their Rugby Championship clash against New Zealand in Dunedin on Saturday.
According to the supersport.com website, the normally accurate pivot kicked one penalty but missed three other penalties and a conversion. Inside centre Frans Steyn also missed two long-range penalty attempts in the first halt which would have seen the tourists go to the break 18-5 up instead of reaching the break 5-3 down.
“Sitting here afterwards it is easy to make calls but it is a life and death situation for me and maybe I made the wrong call but Morne usually comes back and kicks well,” Meyer told a news conference after the match.
“Frans Steyn is a great goal-kicker and (scrumhalf) Ruan Pienaar can kick as well. You don’t just take a guy off for his goal-kicker. I’ve always said that I am going to bring Johan Goosen through and give him game time.
“But Johan had struggled with his goal-kicking in training during the week and he is still only 20-years-old and he hasn’t played for almost three months. I thought he did superbly for the 25 minutes he was on the field.
“But we could have changed the goal-kicker. We talked about it at half-time. I thought Morne would find his rhythm,” he explained.
Morne Steyn was eventually substituted in the 59th minute for the young tyro Goosen who missed one kick at goal before nailing a 45-metre effort.
Springbok captain Jean de Villiers said that the decision to replace Morne Steyn as the designated kicker had been discussed at half-time but the decision was made to give the flyhalf one more chance.
Morne Steyn then missed his attempted conversion of Bryan Habana’s try in the 49th minute.
“I don’t think that I am the one to give advice about goal kicking. We discussed it at half-time and we felt that we might want to give Ruan an opportunity but we thought to give Morne one more chance. He had one when we scored the try and he went off after that,” said De Villiers.
“You want to show confidence in your players as well and sometimes you have to make those difficult decisions. You make mistakes, I make mistakes. Unfortunately he couldn’t kick all of his goals but that doesn’t make him a bad player,” he explained.
Meyer said that he saw Goosen as South Africa’s potential first-choice flyhalf but that he did not want to rush the youngster while Morne Steyn was still part of his plans.
“I’ve always rated Johan Goosen. I watched him play as a youngster and it is a pity he got injured because he was always part of my plans but I don’t want to throw him to the wolves so last week it was 10 minutes, this week it was 25 minutes. He is a guy with a lot of character and mental toughness.
“But Morne has also shown in the past that he has mental toughness so it is great to have two flyhalves like that. It’s great that Johan is coming through. I will look at the video, take the emotion out of it and maybe make a few hard calls,” he said.

Well Done Sharks!!! You klapped us once again. I think it is four in a row now.
To Jebb and Holmes – you deserve what you get. There is no room for such play in modern rugby.
The game was entertaining especially in those conditions and the Sharks played them much better than we did.
Well done…
