Boks released for domestic duty

The Springboks have released Craig Burden, Frans Malherbe, Jacques Potgieter, Jano Vermaak and Lwazi Mvovo to their respective Currie Cup unions.

There will be no Rugby Championship action this weekend, so Bok head coach Heyneke Meyer has decided to let five of his fringe players get a run in the Currie Cup.

The struggling Blue Bulls will be boosted by the returns of scrumhalf Vermaak and flank Potgieter, while the Sharks have hooker Burden and wing Mvovo available. WP get back tighthead prop Malherbe.

Of those five players, only Mvovo got game time during the Boks’ away fixtures against the Wallabies and All Blacks. He came off the bench in the 53rd minute against Australia in Perth.

Front-rower Pat Cilliers would’ve also been released to the Golden Lions, but he’s been ruled out because of injury.

Meyer will announce a squad of 30 players for the Boks’ final two Rugby Championship Tests on Saturday evening, after the Lions-Sharks clash in Johannesburg. The group will meet in Johannesburg on Sunday to start preparations for the fixtures against the Wallabies and All Blacks, which will be played in Pretoria (29 September) and Soweto (6 October) respectively.

    I mean I know he’s banned for two weeks from all forms of the game.

    So Lambie with 15 minutes out of a possible 320 minutes’ of test rugby, may not play on Saturday. HM said on the Afrikaans news last night that Kirchener received some unfair criticism and that he played well. Therefore Lambie will not start IMO (although I ‘d like him to start)

    @i_love_u_bakkiesbotha-5: where is that useless piece of lard greyling? dom doos!

  • 8.shark4life: Reply to this comment

    Kirchener is farking useless except for catching and kicking the ball down the field! FFS, is this Meyer so farking clueless that he doesn’t see this! What a ch0p!

    @Transformation-7: He is not allowed to play until 30 September and will surely go back to the Bulls after that. Meyer will announce his next group of 30 players on Saturday and therefore Greyling will not be included (thank heavens for that) !!

    @Transformation-7:
    its obviously bigger front row issues meyer is considering.
    his hands are tied.

    @CharlesM-9: Thank fark for that! Maybe we should get Sideshow Bob and Morne to attempt some ruck clean outs and get rid of them that way too?

    @CharlesM-9: thank heavens indeed!

    Is Coenie fit yet? Has he played any CC?

  • 14.i_love_u_bakkiesbotha: Reply to this comment

    @CharlesM-9:
    doesn’t mean he couldnt make the nz game, considering the front row issues meyers weighing up.
    so dont count your chickens yet.
    not that i’m calling for him to make the game.

    @blik-13: No he isn’t and I have not heard when he’ll start again. It will be a risk to pick him in the remaining 2 tests. He has not played tighthead for a long time – I’m concerned that he’ll get injured again (if rushed back too soon). The Boks have really missed Coenie a lot !!

    @i_love_u_bakkiesbotha-14: I trust that Cilliers will be fit to play. Greyling will definitely not be a popular choice !! I still maintain that Greyling doesn’t scrum properly. With his huge body he should be a great prop but we know he is not !!

    Lambie could do with some game time – cos he aint going to get it with HM’s pig-headedness at the moment!

    HM mentioned a mental break for MSteyn. Yet he isnt released… Does this mean he will still be part of the 30 man squad? Why not just drop him now!

    Jantjies deserves a call up.

  • 19.katman: Reply to this comment

    @Jeez-18: I think Heyneke is torn between wanting to give Steyn game time at the Bulls, and wanting to save the Bulls from relegation by keeping Morne away from them.

    @katman-19:

    Haha or maybe this is the start of his long ‘mental break’ and for the bulls sake I hope it lasts until next year…

    i can predict that Tyrone Holmes will get a one week ban, and Jebb Sinclair no weeks…

    @CharlesM-9: You must pick 4 players of colour , thats Chikko’s life line.

    @NicG-17: Lambie is suffering from quota system

    HM will play Morne, Goosen, Jantjies, Chikko , Lambie for 10 and 15

    @capebull-23: Chikko??

    Coonie very badly missed, frankly he may as well wait on next year as EoY tours are tough places for match fit props as it is .. I like the look of Pat, he has a brain and if he can get his technique should not suffer for his size.

    JPotgeiter is a disgrace, with SA wealth of loosies he should never have been a Bok.

    As for Morne I am sorry but it looks like HM will continue with him, just like we had with Earl (Tiger Woods of rugby), JSmit and Januarie with PdV .. ffs !!

  • 26.Doughnut: Reply to this comment

    Oh and please no more Mvovo who couldnt figure out to leave a kick off to bounce across dead ball line .. f*cken idiot. And that was the Oz`game ..

    I’d love to see Goosen and Lambie operating in the same backline.

    Goosen will bring our centres into the game, and with Lambie’s acumen and rugby brain, he would create space for our wings when joining the line.

    Just what you want to give a devastating runner like Hougaard or Pietersen. Space.
