Jantjies back with Boks

Jantjies back with Boks

Four players have been called up to the Springbok squad of 30 for their final two Tests of the Rugby Championship.

They are the uncapped Golden Lions duo of utility back Jaco Taute and flyhalf Elton Jantjies, their experienced provincial team-mate, prop CJ van der Linde, and Cheetahs prop Coenie Oosthuizen.

‘I’d always wanted to include Jaco in the squad but an untimely injury meant we could not select him earlier. Jaco is big, strong, fast and versatile and it will be good to get him involved,’ said Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer.

‘Elton was part of the squad before this season, against England in June and in the first part of the Rugby Championship. He only missed out when we had to cut the numbers of the squad and it’s good to have him back.

‘CJ, who took part in our training camps earlier in the season, brings a lot of experience to our pack and he is no longer injured. Apart from being the second most experienced prop in Springbok history, after Os du Randt, he is versatile and can play loosehead and tighthead.

‘And it’s great to have Coenie back with us after he picked up an injury on debut in the first test against England in June. He is a world class prop and losing him was a big setback.’

Meyer added only two scrumhalves had been selected for the Tests, which meant Jano Vermaak misses out. The national selectors felt that Vermaak is familiar with the game plan and can easily be brought back in should his services be required.

Springbok squad – Willem Alberts, Andries Bekker, Craig Burden, Pat Cilliers, Marcell Coetzee, Juan de Jongh, Jean de Villiers (c), Jannie du Plessis, Eben Etzebeth, Johan Goosen, Bryan Habana, Francois Hougaard, Elton Jantjies, Zane Kirchner, Juandré Kruger, Pat Lambie, Tiaan Liebenberg, Francois Louw, Tendai Mtawarira, Lwazi Mvovo, Coenie Oosthuizen, Ruan Pienaar, Jacques Potgieter, Frans Steyn, Morné Steyn, Adriaan Strauss, Jaco Taute, CJ van der Linde, Flip van der Merwe, Duane Vermeulen.

Great come back on Friday, signs of a good team. Great fight back and determination. Must prepare for Griquas in promo/rel games. They definitely are not unbeatable. Wishful thinking you will probably say.LOL.

Great to see our #1 fullback finally selected but really means f#ckall in the greater scheme of things as Heyneke has to select 3 POCs in the starting 15 therefore Kirchner is gauranteed his spot ahead of Jaco and Pat. The latter two will be impact players for rest of their Bok careers. Sad reality of SA sport.

  • 258.Jeraldjay: Reply to this comment

    @kwas-257:
Those POC are such a burden on Bok Rugby. Players like Habana and Beast are of no value to the Boks and just their to make up the numbers.

According to you their’s probably no room for either Kolisi or Juan De Jong in future Boks teams.

Please think before posting such completely idiotic comments.

    Skops not bad.
But remember at RWCs you get double points.
Now going on that if you played those same teams…Tonga,Fiji, USA, England in normal circumstances you guys still would not have got too #1 on the rankings.
But from October 2007 – mid August 2008 when the international rugby started again, you guys held the #1 spot. Of course that on time. In game time you guys only held the #1 spot for 3 games.

So what makes Matfield and Smit ambassador to the game of rugby?
Yet McCawsome according to you is not.

  • 266.kwas: Reply to this comment

@Hurricane-264: Best little patch for Boks was 2009 when we beat All Blacks in 3 straight tests. Not sure how many test nations can say they have achieved that. And that was with the players doing the coaching nogal!

  • 267.kwas: Reply to this comment

@Hurricane-265: Dan Carter better role model than any of those 3. McCaw simply the best cheat to have ever played the game. Smit’s image blighted by continuing to play for Boks at least 2 seasons past his prime when he was the 2nd best hooker in SA by a country mile keeping the best hooker in the world out of the starting line up. Matfield a vuilgat but best lineout jumper in history of game.

Dan Carter my choice for role model any day of the week.

  • 268.kwas: Reply to this comment

@Jeraldjay-258: Missed the point. Beast and Habs without doubt best in their positions, but I was referring to the useless plonker at fullback who simply fulfills the 3rd POC requirement. And yes, Morne Steyn is another useless plonker in the team who shouldn’t be anywhere near the Boks based on current form. Juan DeJ better than Frans Steyn/JdV? Please. And where is there room for Kolisi with the likes of Vermeulen, Alberts, Flo, Marcel in top form?

A bad Carter and Richie is still an awsome combo. Richie taking time out to stretch his stay appears to be a Jon Smit scenario. Will be interesting to see though.

Etsebeth doesnt seem fit enough for 80mins,
I wouldnt change much from the last outing. I recon Morne will be benched or subbed early. hopefully benched.
Loosies seemed to be good together so i would stick with them.
I think it is time Lambie filled the flyhalf possie as we play Oz first.

Yes it will be interesting to see how Richie is managed in order for him to reach the next Wc and to be successful. A big gamble at quite long odds imo that usually doesn’t come off for most if not all players, but there have been few players in the history of the game like the Ab Captain so I wouldn’t bet against it, nor with all due respect to the Rugby Gods would I bet on it happening.

Good try. No he always kicks the ball back into the maul when he is not ready to clear, it puts his whole pack offside.
Refs never spot it and he seems to be getting away with it.

Janjies, will just be warming the seat. It’s not fair what HM has done to Lambie and If I was lambie. My next club would be somewhere in France.. go make your money and come back whehn HM is gone…And I will call it now…HM will start with M Steyn on Saturday… just have a feeling, that HM still has not learnt his lessson… Please HM start realising the talent you have at your desposal and stop selecting people on Size and the fact that they are Blue Bulls…

  • 287.bokfan1: Reply to this comment

This Dragon should be Bok #10! He is playing brilliantly, kicks amazingly and has paid his dues and deserves a chance to make the jersey his (or at least until Goosen gets more experience).

  • 288.bokfan1: Reply to this comment

@rabooby-286: Its not “fair” what has been done to Lambie and Jantjies! But that is sport and there is 100 years of “not fairs”.

Lambie has proven his character and dedication by staying in SA and playing to be a Bok. Same with Elton. The boys want that green jersey, more then we can ever imagine, and we should respect them for their dedication

  • 289.rabooby: Reply to this comment

    @Bokfan1
I highly respect Lambie and Janjies,, but HM is not giving them game time.. which sucks.
And playing people like Kirshner and M Steyn before them. which must be sole destroying for the youngsters…

  • 290.bokfan1: Reply to this comment

    @rabooby-289: I agree with you.

To be fair, at the beginning of this year, I wouldve also stuck with Morne.
And we cant be overly-shocked at Kirchner’s inclusion – any coach would stick with players he knows (Jake relied on his U21s too).
If Morne kickis 90/95% penalties and good touch finders, then we cant complain too much.

However, by now HM must skrik wakker.
Elton deserves at LEAST 7 Tests (what Morne had this year) to either prove or disprove his aptitude for Test rugby.

Lambie deserves at least 7 Tests (like Kirchner has had) to prove or disprove his form.
Goosen and Taute must be understudies and get 10/20 mins game time.
by 2014 HM knows who his starters are for RWC (but he should be trying to win every Test match, like he said in the beginning. If the Boks win the Tests, then the selections for RWC are obvious no?)

The forwards seem to be coming right (thank goodness for Flouw and Duane being picked) and our tight 5 will improve with Coenie back and hopefully Bekker recovers 100% to continue to make an impact from the bench (nothing wrong with Juandre starting).
So the pressure is on 9 and 10 to make use of the improving forward effort, and then the rest of the backline to make it count.
The botched try between Kirchner and Habana against ABs was unforgiveable at their level.
The messed up try against the Wallabies (Morne’s skip-pass) equally so.

I recall JdV talking about “we need to get experience and fast” (I think it was after the Wallabies game) but it is often the more experienced Boks (mostly found in the backline) letting the Boks down.

I know we’ve played two blind side flanks on the park together (…yawn, sob)….but has any team you can remember played two open siders/genuine fetchers together? Might be a revolution?

Instead of going in the obvious direction (comfort zone) of lots of looseforward T-rex’s, go the other way instead, with more Raptors…
