Frans fails late fitness test

Frans fails late fitness test

Frans Steyn has been ruled out of Saturday’s Test at Loftus having failed to recover sufficiently from an ankle injury.

This means Jean de Villiers will shift to 12, Jaco Taute will make his Test debut at 13, and Juan de Jongh will warm the bench.

Coenie Oosthuizen also failed a late fitness test and has been replaced by Pat Cilliers.

‘Frans went for a number of scans and X-rays this week and after specialist consultation it was decided that he should rather not play against Australia,’ said Springbok team doctor Craig Roberts. ‘Coenie, who played 35 minutes of rugby for the Free State Cheetahs last weekend, had stiffness in the neck and shoulder area after the game.

‘After sitting out training on Monday, he felt much better and took part in the field sessions on Tuesday and Wednesday, but based on the nature of his injury and the initial symptoms early in the week, we felt that it would be better to withdraw him from the Test. Coenie is a young player who has a lot of rugby ahead of him and with injuries like these it’s always better to gradually build him back to full match fitness.’

Springboks (revised) – 15 Zane Kirchner, 14 Bryan Habana, 13 Jean de Villiers, 12 Jaco Taute, 11 Francois Hougaard, 10 Johan Goosen, 9 Ruan Pienaar, 8 Duane Vermuelen, 7 Willem Alberts, 6 Francois Louw, 5 Andries Bekker, 4 Eben Etzebeth, 3 Jannie du Plessis, 2 Adriaan Strauss, 1 Beast Mtawarira.
Subs: 16 Tiaan Liebenberg, 17 Pat Cilliers, 18 Flip van der Merwe, 19 Marcel Coetzee, 20 Elton Jantjies, 21 Juan de Jongh, 22 Pat Lambie.

Im chuffed for Taute – we all know he can be awesome, but I feel kuk for De Jongh. He is an awesome 13 and has not had the chance to establish himself yet

  • 7.trupisero: Reply to this comment

@bokfan1-6: Wouldn’t it be better to move JdV to 12 and Taute to 13?

Now have rookies next to each other.

  • 8.JA-JA: Reply to this comment

    Yes!!!!

I would have been more at ease tough if it was JDV that was ruled out and we had a midfield of F. Steyn and Taute.

    Congrats Jaco!

May this be the start of a long and prosperous career in the Bok jersey. Good Luck

@trupisero-7: JDV will move to 12 and Taute will play 13.

Wrong centre is out. Am midfield of Steyn and Taute would have been something to watch. Anyway, it is what it is. And what it is should still be too good for the Ozzies.

And after all the assurances that they weren’t rushing an undercooked Coenie into the team, it seems they were indeed. Pat’s okay though. Our pack (including bench) looks marginally better than theirs.

SimonBorchardt your team sheet is wrong,

14 Bryan Habana, 13 Jean de Villiers, 12 Jaco Taute, 11 Francois Hougaard

    it should be,

14 Bryan Habana, 13 Jaco Taute, 12 Jean de Villiers, 11 Francois Hougaard

  • 13.Chris4Lions: Reply to this comment

I think this time next year Taute will be pairing Frans in the midfield. Juan is only in the team for his experience and there isnt another player at the moment who has the “Captain” material on the field. The moment Bizzie or Scalla returns he’s out.

Good luck to Jaco!! Though I’d far rather he replaced Niknaks at 15, with JDJ at 12

  • 15.Loki: Reply to this comment

Pushing Coenie through way too quick after such an injury. Now he has broken down again. Should have played 60min for Cheetahs this weekend and on bench agains AB’s week later.

  • 16.NagouGrote: Reply to this comment

JDV has underperformed but 12 is his position and he is class. It will be up to him to ignite Taute. This is an international and there is less space so I think the young lad is going to find it difficult. Glad Jean is in between the rookies. He will undoubtly be a calming influence and offers more than Frans whom really has not been special

See Coenie is also out and Pat Cilliers in. Now only if JdJ and Lambie could get a run in the 2nd half for 30min each. Would be exciting really. Though doubt very much that Meyer would take his captain off. Strauss would do a fine job though, if we in the lead who knows he may be brave enough to give both some game time.

JdV will start at inside centre not outside. Taute is starting at outside centre.

  • 18.rossoneri: Reply to this comment

So two players getting a debut start. Nice one. Bet Elton Jantjies never throught that Taute would get to run on and start for the Boks before him and Lambie. Tough one.

  • 19.Puma: Reply to this comment

@NagouGrote-16: Frans has not been special because of Morne being the flyhalf. Would have loved to have seen him play with Goosen at fh.

  • 20.kaksioek: Reply to this comment

    @JA-JA-8: @katman-11: Agreed.

  • 21.kaksioek: Reply to this comment

Sunny Bin Wasabi would look ordinary playing outside Morne Steyn.

  • 22.Rhys7: Reply to this comment

Should be Taute at 15 Aplon at 14 JDJ at 13 JDV at 12 11 Habana 10 Jantjes 9 Goosn

  • 23.Rhys7: Reply to this comment

Well Simon you got the team wrong and

‘Coenie Oosthuzyen is also failed’ grammar !!!!!

  • 24.NagouGrote: Reply to this comment

Im surprised Elton is there although Lambie is an average players he odfers more than Elton who is at best a good CC player. Meyer is playing safe and is heading public opinion. I do not rate Jantjies.

  • 25.Chris4Lions: Reply to this comment

Cant wait to see this backline if everyone is fit:

    15 Lambie
    14 JPP
    13 Taute
    12 Steyn
    11 Habana
    10 The Goose
    9 Hougaart

  • 26.Puma: Reply to this comment

@Rhys7-22: What you talking about. Goosen at 9?

I guess you dont rate your wife either!!

  • 28.NagouGrote: Reply to this comment

Yes Puma agreed Frans has underperformed because of Morne so Do not know why JDV should be the sole culprit. I remember Frans as the no nonsense lad in the 2007 WC he is but a shadow of that player.

  • 29.Puma: Reply to this comment

@Chris4Lions-25: Will be awesome for sure that backline.

  • 30.Rhys7: Reply to this comment

Woops Goosen 10 and Hougi 9

  • 31.Chris4Lions: Reply to this comment

    @Puma-29:

Then you can have Aplon, Jantjies and Mvovu/JDJ on the bench

  • 32.John Galt: Reply to this comment

Watch JdV come alive again at 12.

if he plays like he did against the Ausies at the WC at 12, itll only be good.

    13 not his poisition.

  • 33.Hondo: Reply to this comment

HM is cautious coach, the loss of F. Styen is massive, therefore he doesn’t fully rely on Alain Rolland to win the test for the Boks, Taute is a reasonable size centre with skills and flair
Trouble is Goosen and Pienaar can’t tackle, ditto Lambie, Jantjies the defender is a joke and JdJ is a miss/fake tackles specialist. ;)
And Kirchner the last line of defence, hope it won’t come to that. :-D

  • 34.Chris4Lions: Reply to this comment

    @John Galt-32:

But will he be better than Steyn at 12, i doubt it.

  • 35.Puma: Reply to this comment

@NagouGrote-28: Fransie was our best player during the last world cup 2011. JdV too not looking great at all.

Now I remember when JdV was moved to outside centre against England, everyone here were praising him no end, saying that was where he should be playing from then on. Now in the RC he is not playing that well there and everyone has now changed their minds, saying it is becaue he is playing out of position. So how could he have played well then at outside centre and not now?

  • 36.NagouGrote: Reply to this comment

Yes Chris I can see you are not in the mood for talking rugby go drink you brandy and coke.

  • 37.John Galt: Reply to this comment

    @Chris4Lions-34:
Frans Steyn needs to lose 5 -10 kgs and gain some speed.

he really does need an off season full of conditioning methinks.

i personally dont think he’s been at his best. But thats just me.

  • 38.Chris4Lions: Reply to this comment

So you are actuallt sying that de Villiers is better than Frans Steyn. I think you already had a few too many Brandy and Coke’s

  • 39.Puma: Reply to this comment

@Chris4Lions-31: Yes agree. Great bench that too.

  • 40.garth: Reply to this comment

@Puma-35: No, Jean is just k@k.

  • 41.NagouGrote: Reply to this comment

Puma I disagree with everyone that Jean played well at 13 he has not been playing well for more than a season but he has class and may come back. With Goosen and Taute there he is crucial and I ope he can hit some form.

  • 42.Puma: Reply to this comment

    @Chris4Lions-34: Agree.

@Puma-39: JdV has been really poor in the last few games.

  • 43.Chris4Lions: Reply to this comment

    Nagougrote

Comment 38 is not meant for you, i guess i can do with a brannas and coke now…

  • 44.bokfan1: Reply to this comment

@rossoneri-18: Jaaa that is a bit of bullsh!t.
Lambie and Janjties deserve a few starts too

  • 45.NagouGrote: Reply to this comment

Chris where did I compare Frans and Steyn they are different players and Frans is not a centre he is a fullback as far as I am concerned take a sip of neat brandy.

  • 46.viewer: Reply to this comment

Great. We get daily updates – pooper69 (South African crime) & Hondo (refs & “quotas”)

  • 47.Chris4Lions: Reply to this comment

@NagouGrote-45: Read your comment Frans & Steyn are the same person.

    One sip for you…

  • 48.Malcolm B: Reply to this comment

    @NagouGrote-16
I agree with you. Frans Steyn is nothing special IMO. I just dont get what everyone sees. He doesnt pass, goes to ground, no line breaks and often enough gives the ball back to opposition. I think JDV will come alive again at 12 on saturday with Goosen putting him into space and Taute will shine on his outside. Expect some great tries!!!

  • 49.NagouGrote: Reply to this comment

Chris I see brandy has a strong influence but a clever lad like you knows what I meant.

  • 50.NagouGrote: Reply to this comment

MalcolmB sounds about right to me.
