Frans fails late fitness test

Frans fails late fitness test

Frans Steyn has been ruled out of Saturday’s Test at Loftus having failed to recover sufficiently from an ankle injury.

This means Jean de Villiers will shift to 12, Jaco Taute will make his Test debut at 13, and Juan de Jongh will warm the bench.

Coenie Oosthuizen also failed a late fitness test and has been replaced by Pat Cilliers.

‘Frans went for a number of scans and X-rays this week and after specialist consultation it was decided that he should rather not play against Australia,’ said Springbok team doctor Craig Roberts. ‘Coenie, who played 35 minutes of rugby for the Free State Cheetahs last weekend, had stiffness in the neck and shoulder area after the game.

‘After sitting out training on Monday, he felt much better and took part in the field sessions on Tuesday and Wednesday, but based on the nature of his injury and the initial symptoms early in the week, we felt that it would be better to withdraw him from the Test. Coenie is a young player who has a lot of rugby ahead of him and with injuries like these it’s always better to gradually build him back to full match fitness.’

Springboks (revised) – 15 Zane Kirchner, 14 Bryan Habana, 13 Jean de Villiers, 12 Jaco Taute, 11 Francois Hougaard, 10 Johan Goosen, 9 Ruan Pienaar, 8 Duane Vermuelen, 7 Willem Alberts, 6 Francois Louw, 5 Andries Bekker, 4 Eben Etzebeth, 3 Jannie du Plessis, 2 Adriaan Strauss, 1 Beast Mtawarira.
Subs: 16 Tiaan Liebenberg, 17 Pat Cilliers, 18 Flip van der Merwe, 19 Marcel Coetzee, 20 Elton Jantjies, 21 Juan de Jongh, 22 Pat Lambie.

Considering the Bok gameplan i cant believe guys are giving Frans Steyn and Jean De Villiers a hard time about their performances thus far. If 9 doesnt kick the ball away 10 is sure to so 12 and 13 have f all chance of getting their hands on the ball.

    Dogfood,
I wonder what these words “… 3 Spinners for India…” infer?
Firstly, it does not acknowledge Yuvraj and Raina as spinners. But are Peterson and Duminy ‘spinners’, let alone better ones?

Since when is one not allowed to extrapolate on childish pink ,silly inferences?

The rainbow has 7 colours(vibgyor or Roy G Biv) which blend one into the other as their wavelengths change to give untold numbers of other colours including pink. What is not to like about COLOURS then? It makes life very colourful.

But ” d.arkies, whiteys” are not colours let alone of the rainbow. They are nowhere to be seen in “vibgyor”. They are just your ugly derogatory words and misleadingly and mischieviouslly used here ‘gatkruiper”. If you do not stop that activity you may well come out at the oral end like a bad case of horrid worm infestation.

No big loss. Frans Steyn has been k@k so far. Why people on this blog hero worship the fellow is beyond me. JDV international days are over too. Needs to be laid to pasture!

  • 179.katman: Reply to this comment

I reckon, with a faster, flatter-standing flyhalf we’re going to see a rejuvenated Jean de Villiers. That rubbish of him having to stand that deep because Morne plays that kind of game is over. Watch Goosen, De Villiers and Taute find (or make) plenty of holes in the Oz midfield. And Taute could just be our new Jaque Fourie. Bring it on.

@John Galt-108: Hypocrite or a liar, maybe both, because when you faux pas you made regarding Robbie P was about T20 not Test. Why is it so difficult to say I didn’t know and made an arsse of myself and will all move on, just man up and change, this country longs for it.

@katman-144: I’m consistent, I tell white okes exactly what I tell ignorant black guys, I don’t change my tune depending on company I’m with, you should try it, its liberating.

@katman-179: Don’t you believe that Taute is better suited at no. 15?
I believe that we need a young successor at Fullback and I believe Taute is that man. Lambie might be a short term option at fullback but he is too slow to be an out-an-out international fullback.
Lambie will also probably always play 2nd fiddle at fullback with Goosen and Jantjies being groomed to take over there.
So why not introduce Lambie at no. 12? I reckon he has a future for the boks there. Paul Jordaan will be the future at 13.

    So, you could have a potential future 10 – 15 as follows: 10 Goosen, 11 Hougaard, 12 Lambie, 13 Jordaan, 14 Rhule 15 Taute

Now that looks like backline that could cause some damage when settled

Sorry – ‘Lambie will also probably always play 2nd fiddle at fullback with Goosen and Jantjies being groomed to take over there.’ should be FLYHALF

@XhosaKid-181: Nah, I reckon you’re just a disgruntled poepol. We Must Have It is not working out quick enough for you, so you resort to the all whites are nazis stereotype. You won’t find a sympathetic audience round here for that sht though.

  • 185.katman: Reply to this comment

@Marty-182: Jordaan’s time will come soon. As will Serfontein’s. They could be the Bok midfield in a few year’s time.

And I like Taute at 15 or 13. I just feel that he adds more at centre. He’s a Jaque Fourie type of player (who was also a good fullback before he became a centre).

With regards to fullback. I think a guy like Willie le Roux is an option, but the real deal is Andries Coetzee. He reminds me a lot of a young Christian Cullen.

  • 186.Marty: Reply to this comment

@katman-185: I need to keep an eye out for Andries Coetzee. We are looking good for the future though.

Let’s see how Goosen and Taute go this weekend – Boks to kick some arse Saturday

@katman-184: You don’t know me, if you knew me you would know all I want is a better South Africa and that is not going to happen when we have black and white corners, where we have people not prepared to treat each other fairly. If you see me as a racist or anti white then you don’t have a clue, you no different to the white people who called Mandela a terrorist, not that I’m anyway comparing myself to Rholihlahla.

As I said, I tell you white folks exactly what I tell black people with similar ignorant racist thinking, South Africa will be a better place, when people start putting South Africans ahead of their own skin colour.

This cricket loss was a blessing in disguise.

How many times have we seen the Proteas cruise through the round robin stages then lose in the knock outs.

Don’t think Smith has ever admitted captaincy errors in his post match interviews so kudos to AB.

    Tough luck on Frans.

But as I’ve stated repeatedly, one man’s injury is another man’s opportunity. With a spanking new starting 10 and 13, things can happen tomorrow. Am looking forward to the match.

@Marty-186: I think they will. Even without my Bok shades on, I still reckon we shade the Aussies in our pack and our backline.

And we still need Bismarck and JPP to get back. So all’s good.

  • 198.katman: Reply to this comment

@David-187: You joke, but I think a centre combination of Schalk Britz and Keegan Daniel could be destructive. In fact, I’m sure we could put together an entire backline of hard and fast running forwards. Spies and Kankowski on the wings, for starters.

And Brok at prophalf, of course.

  • 199.Kaizan: Reply to this comment

A good balanced backline will include some big guys to play direct and create the holes and some smaller, nimbler guys to run through the holes.

The most important thing for a scrumhalf is quick distribution so the team can run at an unset defence.

Your flyhalf is the most crucial position on the field and he needs to be a brilliant decision-maker and have solid all-round skills plus a strong mental game.

Inside centre needs to have good distribution skills and also needs to be sizeable enough to make an impact at the gainline… This is the guy who can create the space for the 13 and for the wings. He needs to be a playmaker who can draw the defenders in, but also skillful enough to get the offload away.

Outside centre can be big or small, but just needs to be quick, steppy and be a good decision maker.. Offloading skills are also important as he will be the link man to the wings.

Wings can be big or small, but they need to be very quick and steppy…. Wings have the luxury of the touchline on defence but this touchline is also a burden on attack. Your wingers therefore need to be strong attacking players. They need to play on instinct more than gameplan…. Wings have a shorter lifespan to any other position on the field and should be rotated more often than any other position, so as to keep them fresh and unpredictable… Younger wings are usually more dangerous than experienced wings.

Full back – needs to be good under the high ball and have an educated boot. Defence is crucial in this position, both one on one and positional. Good counter-attacking skills are also necessary and for this reason your fullback needs to be quick as well.

With the above in mind, here is a decent Bok backline:

9 – Hougaard (quicker distribution than Pienaar)
10 – Goosen (great all-round player. Potentially world class)
12 – Frans Steyn (great rugby player, plus has the size to make him physically imposing too)
13 – JP Pietersen/ Paul Jordaan – (both quick and steppy. Would be brilliant in space)
11 – Gio Aplon (The best winger in South Africa)
    14 – Mvovo / Rhule – (Both promising wingers)
15 – Jaco Taute (Brilliant allround player)

Big guys and small guys in that team…. Experience and youth…. Balance.
