Coenie cleared to play

Springbok prop Coenie Oosthuizen has been cleared to play after an examination by a neurosurgeon in Durban on Tuesday.

Oosthuizen injured his neck during his Test debut for South Africa against England in Durban in June. He spent almost three months doing rehabilitation and returned to action for the Cheetahs in a Currie Cup match last weekend.

Following the match, Oosthuizen experienced some muscle stiffness and it was decided to send him for a further consultation with a neurosurgeon in Durban, who was in agreement with the previous assessments of his injury.

‘We wanted to ensure that we don’t put Coenie at undue risk by playing him,’ said Springbok team doctor Craig Roberts. ‘The neurosurgeon is happy with his progress and the scans and has declared him fit to play.’

The Springbok match 22 to play the All Blacks in Soweto will be announced on Wednesday afternoon.

I like the way the team is starting to shape up now.

Once we have Pietersen, Bismark, Burger and perhaps even Juan Smith back from injury, and if Meyer succeeds in brining back guys like Gurthro and Du Preez, and if youngsters like Arno Botha, Kolisi, Taute etc. keep on developing, we could have a very nice squad of 30 for next year’s Four Nations.

    When is JPPieterson back?

Hougard is struggling with his form, needs some box wine and a rest.

  • 12.blik: Reply to this comment

Bismark and Guinie-pig snapped their ACLs, going to take them more than 6 months to get back. I snapped mine 6 months ago, and I have legs like Jean-Claude and a beard like Chuck Norris. It’s a long slow recovery.

  • 13.Puma: Reply to this comment

@blik-11: Just read on Sports24 that JPP is back in training. Brilliant. Good to see one of my favourite Sharks back. He was in sublime for before breaking his thumb. Bissie and JPP were a big loss for Boks this RC.

Bissie will only be back around April I read. So that will be 8 months since he injured that knee.

@Puma-13: If we get JP back, and with Habanas form, we are looking dangerous out wide again. We just need a descent 15.

  • 16.blik: Reply to this comment

@Puma-13: I hope Bismark will only be 8 months. Look how long it is taking Schalk to recover and his was not snapped. He has been running for month too and is still not ready. Nazim Carr snapped his, will be interesting to see when he is ready.

  • 17.Puma: Reply to this comment

@blik-15: Doubt that JPP will be ready for the Boks this weekend. Think he will be for the eoyt though. Huge pity he injured that thumb before the RC. He left a massive gap. Was in the form of his life too, playing some unbelievable rugby for Sharks before that injury. Just pleased he is back.

  • 18.Puma: Reply to this comment

@blik-16: They said that Bissie would be back in April next year. Then have to wait and see. Bissie and JPP were both a huge loss for Boks this RC. Though Strauss has played really well, just does not bring the same as Bissie though. No winger either has been as good as JPP either.

Good news this. In other news I see elton signed for the stormers

  • 20.blik: Reply to this comment

@Puma-18: Agree, Strauss is a good ball carrier and has a good workrate, solid set piece. But Bismark has a much better all-round game. He is so strong over the ruck/maul that he gets a lot of turnovers. I don’t think there are many players around who are stronger than him.

NZ pack is 870kg odd, the Bok pack is 935kg odd. That’s over 8kg per man. If the Boks last the 80min, it’s goig to be another bullying. And if Coenie can come off the bench, he adds a few extra slabs of steak and pork crackling.

  • 21.blik: Reply to this comment

Duane Vermeelen is also good over a ruck/maul at effacting turnovers. Also read somewhere that Andries bekker made 19 tackles on Saturday, the most in the team. We need the lang man back to form and injury free.

A one season loan only (for now)- but it’s better than nothing.
Stormers will probably score twice as many tries as during this season now that they have at last a decent flyhalf .

Morne Morkel from hero to zero.

Mind you all the Proteas batters owe the bowlers drinks. They were nowhere in this tournsment.

But his contract does terminate at the end of 2013. And the Lions might have right of first refusal.

But the job is not finished until the paperwork is done. That’s the way AC rolls. And that’s the right way.

Why bother playing Coenie I mean dont rush him in we have CJ and Cilliers whos been out standing so keep giving Cilliers his chance or give CJ a run out for Boks again need to cover both tight and loose head position.

To those on.here who.say the boks will be great at full strength thats true but rarely does a season go by when the top 15 players stay fit and that is why people must be picked on form because you never know when they may be injured next e.g. Duane Vermeulen would have been a bok last year had he not been injured but should have been picked 2010 EOYT. Also every person has their own opinion on the best Bok team so whose i best noone knows.

    Here is mine:

    15 Francois Steyn
    14 JP Pietersen
    13 Jaque Fourie
    12 Jean de Villiers
    11 Bryan Habana
    10 Johan Goosen
    9 Francois Hougaard
    8 Duane Vermeulen
    7 Schalk Burger
    6 Francois Louw
    5 Andries Bekker
    4 Eben Etsebeth
    3 Jannie Du Plessis
    2 Bismark Du Plessis
    1 Tendai Mtawarira

    16 Schalk Brits
    17 Coenie Oosthuzyen
    18 Juandre Kruger
    19 Willem Alberts
    20 Ruan Pienaar
    21 Elton Jantjes
    22 Gio Aplon

    23 Chilliboy Ralepelle
    24 Pat Cilliers
    25 Siya Kolisi
    26 Marcell Coetzee
    27 Jano Vermaak
    28 Pat Lambie
    29 Juan De Jongh
    30 Jaco Taute

Big concern I’ve heard is that Coenie was born with a natural fusion which puts added pressure on the neck.

For all those hoping Carlos Spencer would coach the Bok backs, looks like he’s getting out of coaching. He wants to get into sports promotional work, whatever that is. Perhaps he could get some tips from Keo

    http://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/rugby/all-blacks/7759821/All-Blacks-will-destroy-Springboks-Spencer

Another option, I hear Quade Cooper, of all people, has a boxing clause in his contract. Carlos vs Quade would be magic! But Quade could possibly die by the second round

You shouldn’t pick someone to play a Test match against the AB’s (actually against anyone) when they have just been to see a neurosurgeon. Give the ou more of a break, don’t rush it

  • 31.corporal punishment: Reply to this comment

@blik:20 – if the bok pack is 935 kg, the ABs will love ruuning those big guys off their feet until their hands on their knees, their lungs burning and their stomachs heaving. Pack size does not gurantee success, but superior fitness and skills often does.

The boks did not remotely bully the AB’s in Dunedin. The AB’s won the lineouts and edged the scrums (smashing the bok scrum once Beast went off). The boks edged the breakdown and the collisions, and as usual we had no answer for your maul. But the much higher skill level of the Ab forwards, shown beautifully by the read and white lock offloads for the dagg try, gave the Ab forwards a points victory over your pack.

Until the boks get over the idea that they will win just by having a big pack that (supposedly) bullies the opposition I to submission, you will continue to lose more games than you win against the Aussies and the all blacks.

  • 32.kwas: Reply to this comment

Surely Coenie can’t be FULLY fit if the Bok management deemed it necessary to refer him to a neurosurgeon just a day ago. Little point in playing someone against the best team in the world when he is clearly still carrying a bad injury that requires 2nd and 3rd opinions from various specialists.

  • 33.SodaJoe: Reply to this comment

@kwas-32: I agree. This is silly. Let the kid get fully fit – at most in the Currie Cup. Then take him on EOYT. He is going to be a world famous prop. Fast & strong. And plays both sides of the scrum – a rare animal.

This is short-sighted – protect him.

All Blacks will destroy Boks – Spencer

    ——————————————————————————–

    by Brenden Nel 03 October 2012, 07:31

Despite the fact that the Springboks dominated the All Blacks in Dunedin, former All Black flyhalf and discarded Lions backline coach Carlos Spencer has predicted the World Champions will “destroy” the Boks this weekend in their Castle Rugby Championship clash at FNB Stadium.

Spencer, who was fired as Lions backline coach, told Fairfax Media that the World Champions will put matters back into perspective this weekend with a match that will bring Bok fans crashing down to earth.

The former All Black believes Australia were so bad in their five-try defeat at the hands of the Boks at Loftus that the All Blacks would show the Boks just how out of touch with reality they are.

“The Springboks obviously needed a good win but the Aussie weren’t great. I think the All Blacks will destroy them this week,” Spencer said.

“It will be a big confidence booster for the Springboks. There was a lot of pressure on them over here in terms of their last couple of efforts. They played some good rugby at times and didn’t kick away as much ball as they had previously. That’s definitely a step in the right direction for them.

“But they are going to come up against a better defence this week. If they can hold the ball for long periods and not kick it away they’ll be in with a chance, but the All Blacks will be too good for them.”

Spencer believes the fact the All Blacks have claimed the Rugby Championship already will allow them to play with a freedom seldom seen and will lift the tension of the occasion and motivate them more.

    AIMING FOR WORLD RECORD

New Zealand have won 15 consecutive games thus far, within sight of the 17 which is the world-record for tier one nations.

“They’ve already got the trophy in the bag so they can go out there and express themselves with no pressure to win it,” he said.

“I’ve been in that situation before with the Blues when you’ve already secured a semifinal spot. You never go out there to give 90 percent. You always want to win the last game.

“It will make the trip home a lot better. They won’t be relaxing just because they’ve won the tournament. It would be a disappointing way to end the competition if they were to lose this week. They’ll be fired up, hungry and aiming to destroy them.”

Spencer also said he would stay on in Johannesburg, taking up a sports promotional job and keeping his two young children in the country, but after being fired “via email” by the Lions, did not want to get back into coaching.

“They cut Mitch and I was next. It’s just one of those things. People get fired everyday. It’s time to move on and try something different,” Spencer told Fairfax Media.

“It would have been nice for the CEO or president to tell me face-to-face. It was a cowardly way to do it.”

“I just saw it as an opportunity to finally get out of rugby,” Spencer said. “Coaching for me was never a long-term thing. It was something to do once I hung up the boots. It’s just probably happened a little bit sooner than I thought.”

Despite losing his job at the Lions, Spencer hopes they will become a force again.

“Speaking to the people in Joburg they can’t believe it. The richest city in South Africa isn’t going to have a team in Super Rugby,” he said. “There’s a lot of disappointment around. It might make them wake up and change a few things so they can get back where they deserve to be.”

  • 43.Doughnut: Reply to this comment

Spencer does not normally over-egg it, warning signs but Boks should also allow some freedom of expression. They have zip to lose and plenty to gain taking on the World Champs ..

@ doughnut 43: I don’t think carlos is the smartest guy to pull on an all black shirt, he would be at the other end of the “brains index” i suspect! So I won’t be putting any store in these rather ungracious comments of his.

I also thinks carlos was stupid to say that rugby coaching was ” just something to do”. He shouldn’t cut off that avenue until he has a new career pathetic lined up.
