All Blacks will destroy Boks - Spencer

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

by Brenden Nel 03 October 2012, 07:31

Despite the fact that the Springboks dominated the All Blacks in Dunedin, former All Black flyhalf and discarded Lions backline coach Carlos Spencer has predicted the World Champions will “destroy” the Boks this weekend in their Castle Rugby Championship clash at FNB Stadium.

Spencer, who was fired as Lions backline coach, told Fairfax Media that the World Champions will put matters back into perspective this weekend with a match that will bring Bok fans crashing down to earth.

The former All Black believes Australia were so bad in their five-try defeat at the hands of the Boks at Loftus that the All Blacks would show the Boks just how out of touch with reality they are.

"The Springboks obviously needed a good win but the Aussie weren't great. I think the All Blacks will destroy them this week," Spencer said.

"It will be a big confidence booster for the Springboks. There was a lot of pressure on them over here in terms of their last couple of efforts. They played some good rugby at times and didn't kick away as much ball as they had previously. That's definitely a step in the right direction for them.

"But they are going to come up against a better defence this week. If they can hold the ball for long periods and not kick it away they'll be in with a chance, but the All Blacks will be too good for them."

Spencer believes the fact the All Blacks have claimed the Rugby Championship already will allow them to play with a freedom seldom seen and will lift the tension of the occasion and motivate them more.

AIMING FOR WORLD RECORD

New Zealand have won 15 consecutive games thus far, within sight of the 17 which is the world-record for tier one nations.

"They've already got the trophy in the bag so they can go out there and express themselves with no pressure to win it," he said.

"I've been in that situation before with the Blues when you've already secured a semifinal spot. You never go out there to give 90 percent. You always want to win the last game.

"It will make the trip home a lot better. They won't be relaxing just because they've won the tournament. It would be a disappointing way to end the competition if they were to lose this week. They'll be fired up, hungry and aiming to destroy them."

Spencer also said he would stay on in Johannesburg, taking up a sports promotional job and keeping his two young children in the country, but after being fired “via email” by the Lions, did not want to get back into coaching.

"They cut Mitch and I was next. It's just one of those things. People get fired everyday. It's time to move on and try something different," Spencer told Fairfax Media.

"It would have been nice for the CEO or president to tell me face-to-face. It was a cowardly way to do it."

"I just saw it as an opportunity to finally get out of rugby," Spencer said. "Coaching for me was never a long-term thing. It was something to do once I hung up the boots. It's just probably happened a little bit sooner than I thought."

Despite losing his job at the Lions, Spencer hopes they will become a force again.

"Speaking to the people in Joburg they can't believe it. The richest city in South Africa isn't going to have a team in Super Rugby," he said. "There's a lot of disappointment around. It might make them wake up and change a few things so they can get back where they deserve to be."

@blik:20 - if the bok pack is 935 kg, the ABs will love ruuning those big guys off their feet until their hands on their knees, their lungs burning and their stomachs heaving. Pack size does not gurantee success, but superior fitness and skills often does.

The boks did not remotely bully the AB's in Dunedin. The AB's won the lineouts and edged the scrums (smashing the bok scrum once Beast went off). The boks edged the breakdown and the collisions, and as usual we had no answer for your maul. But the much higher skill level of the Ab forwards, shown beautifully by the read and white lock offloads for the dagg try, gave the Ab forwards a points victory over your pack.

Until the boks get over the idea that they will win just by having a big pack that (supposedly) bullies the opposition I to submission, you will continue to lose more games than you win against the Aussies and the all blacks.

For all those hoping Carlos Spencer would coach the Bok backs, looks like he's getting out of coaching. He wants to get into sports promotional work, whatever that is. Perhaps he could get some tips from Keo

Another option, I hear Quade Cooper, of all people, has a boxing clause in his contract. Carlos vs Quade would be magic! But Quade could possibly die by the second round

Why bother playing Coenie I mean dont rush him in we have CJ and Cilliers whos been out standing so keep giving Cilliers his chance or give CJ a run out for Boks again need to cover both tight and loose head position.

To those on.here who.say the boks will be great at full strength thats true but rarely does a season go by when the top 15 players stay fit and that is why people must be picked on form because you never know when they may be injured next e.g. Duane Vermeulen would have been a bok last year had he not been injured but should have been picked 2010 EOYT. Also every person has their own opinion on the best Bok team so whose i best noone knows.

Here is mine:

15 Francois Steyn
14 JP Pietersen
13 Jaque Fourie
12 Jean de Villiers
11 Bryan Habana
10 Johan Goosen
9 Francois Hougaard
8 Duane Vermeulen
7 Schalk Burger
6 Francois Louw
5 Andries Bekker
4 Eben Etsebeth
3 Jannie Du Plessis
2 Bismark Du Plessis
1 Tendai Mtawarira

16 Schalk Brits
17 Coenie Oosthuzyen
18 Juandre Kruger
19 Willem Alberts
20 Ruan Pienaar
21 Elton Jantjes
22 Gio Aplon

23 Chilliboy Ralepelle
24 Pat Cilliers
25 Siya Kolisi
26 Marcell Coetzee
27 Jano Vermaak
28 Pat Lambie
29 Juan De Jongh
30 Jaco Taute
