Sharks, Stormers in line for Jantjies
3 Oct 2012
Elton Jantjies is set to join the Sharks or Stormers on loan for the 2013 Super Rugby campaign, while WP and the Sharks have already snapped up other Lions’ stars.
Media reports on Tuesday suggested that the Stormers had already agreed terms to sign Jantjies on a loan deal. However, Lions CEO Ruben Moggee confirmed to this site that nothing has been finalised yet.
Confirmation will only be made after the Springboks’ Rugby Championship Test against the All Blacks in Soweto.
‘Elton has had several chats with different franchises,’ Moggee told keo.co.za. ‘From my understanding, he’s had chats with the Stormers, Sharks, Bulls and Kings.
‘However, the Lions and the player would want a franchise that will offer a decent amount of game time. When you consider the flyhalf situation at the different franchises, the Sharks or Stormers should be the likely destinations.’
The loan terms are simple.
Jantjies is still contracted as a Lions player until October 2013, but the Super Rugby clause in his deal allows him to feature for another team next season with the Johannesburg franchise relegated.
The team will have to pay the Springbok pivot’s salaries for the duration of his stay. That amount will be agreed between the player and interested party. So rumours of Jantjies having a R2.5 million asking price could be true.
The player will also have the final decision on where he wants to play, but the Lions will have the opportunity to pass on their advice to him.
The Stormers can offer Jantjies the No 10 jersey during the opening rounds of Super Rugby because of Peter Grant’s Japanese club commitments, Demetri Catrakilis’ departure to the Kings and injuries. However, Moggee believes the Sharks can also offer the 22-year-old starting opportunities.
‘Elton could start at the Stormers or the Sharks,’ said Moggee. ‘When it comes to the Stormers, their disadvantage is their defensive style of play. There are concerns whether Elton can fit into their game plan. They also have to explain their situation with Peter Grant. Yes, he could miss the opening rounds. But will he be first-choice when Peter Grant is ready to play again? Will he be preferred ahead of Elton?
‘The Sharks also have to discuss their plans. While they have Pat Lambie in their squad, they could decide to play him at fullback because that’s the position he’s playing for the Springboks. If they pick Pat at 15, then Elton will get game time at flyhalf.’
Meanwhile, SuperSport.com claims that Lions prop Pat Cilliers and flanker Michael Rhodes have signed for Western Province, while EWN reports that lock Franco van der Merwe has signed for the Sharks. Lionel Mapoe is set to be loaned out to the Bulls with Jaco Taute also having expressed his desire to play Super Rugby next year.
Moggee said loan deals can only be confirmed next week, once all the players have returned to the team base in Johannesburg after the final Rugby Championship Test and the Golden Lions’ Currie Cup clash against Griquas in Kimberley this Saturday.
‘We realise that our best players need to play at the highest level. And that is Super Rugby,’ said Moggee. ‘We are still planning to play in an alternative tournament with European, American and South Sea clubs next season, so we’ll need to have a competitive squad.
‘But we can afford to loan out a few of our best players to other Super Rugby franchises, if they can get starting opportunities. We won’t loan them out to be benched.
‘We will handle these cases individually. There are teams that have expressed their interests.’

@stormersboy-49: Marnus Schoeman.
Give him another 2 years.

@The Sharks rugby pedigree is packaged as dog food-48: Quinn Roux is only scheduled to come back after the Super Rugby season next year.

@garth-44:
you sound like a guy who does not let his prejudices stand in the way of making silly statements. rather, you embrace and use it for the purpose of criticising.
criticism can be of the negative or positive kind, which do you think yours was?
i would like to debate and chat a bit, as positive and good mannerdly as possible, mind you. for cheap wwe putdowns and insults there is the kiwis to satisfy the need.

@stormersboy-49:
I agree about Minnie.

Stormers need Jantjies way more than the Sharks do… And maybe he can help the Stormers score some tries…

“you sound like a guy who does not let his prejudices stand in the way of making silly statements. rather, you embrace and use it for the purpose of criticising.”
look in the fcken mirror chop.
funniest post of the year, the irony in it is unmistakeable

Why should Jantjies even consider going to the Sharks?
3 Oct 2012, 09:25 am
Willievz I read somewhere that he prefers the way they play to the way the Stormers play…
3 Oct 2012, 09:26 am
@THE MAULER-58: But he will sit on the bench?
And from what we’ve heard through the media, he (and his dad) likes to have game time?
3 Oct 2012, 09:27 am
@willievz-57: Why not?
3 Oct 2012, 09:27 am
@willievz-51: Who does he play for?

Willie I agree 100% as Plum has stated Lambie will be 1st choice… Stormers need a FH… Grant is solid but thats it…

@Sasuke-52: Damn I hope that happens
I Reallllllllllllllly reallllllllllllly rate Roux.

@stormersboy-49:
yip, agreed for the most.
my opinion on the stormers is a negative one though because as much as the suppporters and coaches say otherwise, its clear that attack is not as prioritised as defense has been at the union.
you guys keep saying the plan is to build a solid defensive system first and then diversify into an attacking one too but that plan has been in the offing for four years already. naturally, i am sceptical.
therefore, its all good to bracket good players and capable back up players together but at the end of the day will you play a better type of rugby…?..
the sharks are doing this.
anyway, we both agree it is of course wise to build the right depth and having match winners sitting on the bench game in and game out but who are still hungry and willing to perform when they come on goes a long way towards achieving any rugby teams dreams, so good luck to the stormers in this regard.
on the specialist 6, maybe its time to lure louw back to the cape..?..
3 Oct 2012, 09:32 am
@willievz-59: I don’t think he will. I think Plum will play Elton at 10 and Lambie at 15. And then he’d have Viljoen and Ludik on the bench.
With Mcleod, Reinach, Steyn, Jordaan, Mvovo and Ndungane making up the rest of the backline plus subs, this is will undoubtedly be the best backline in SA.

@poppa69-56:
And YOU.
You do realise that you and you alone are single-handedly responsible for STBUR’s rightwing rants over the past 48 hours.

@The Sharks rugby pedigree is packaged as dog food-64: Yes he is impressive. It is only suppose to be a loan deal but you know how enticing those Irish can be.

how much funnier is the irony that you are pointing this out to me..?..

@katman-66: You missed JPP.
There are far too many quality players at the Sharks that will not see game time in next year’s S15.
Given that we don’t have the quality in depth to field 5 quality S15 sides, it is not in the interest of Bok rugby to have 2 of the best 3 flyhalves in the country at a single franchise.
3 Oct 2012, 09:37 am
@Dawn-67: And rant’s they have been!
3 Oct 2012, 09:38 am
@Dawn-62:
no, not at all dawn.
garth likes to put the coach down in as many ways as possible and we all know why that is. he is being dishonest when he tries to couch it in seemingly other reasons.
3 Oct 2012, 09:39 am
@willievz-57:
they play his style of rugby….?…
you know… the attacking kind…
3 Oct 2012, 09:39 am
@willievz-57: Bottom line is: If Elton goes to Durban, either he or Lambie will end up a loser. Unless Lambie has decided to focus on playing 15, and has been consulted. Then Ludik loses…..which would be a shame as well.
We wouldn’t even be having this damn discussion if we were half as professional as the Kiwis……
3 Oct 2012, 09:40 am
@i_love_u_bakkiesbotha-65: I hear you and believe me, no one would like them to play more attacking rugby (provided we win) than the supporters as a whole, but we will take a high win percentage as an alternative with defense as the basis.
Finding that balance is hard, but I’m hoping that some changes in the backline will make the difference.
Most notably at 9-10.
3 Oct 2012, 09:42 am
@Sasuke-68: I know. The Irish (and I seriously believe Gert Smal is whispering in the club’s ears over there) are determined to build a pack of Saffa forwards
I expect to see more young guns heading over in the next few years…. 19 and 20 year olds esecially.
3 Oct 2012, 09:42 am
@katman-66:
now consider how much truer that is when you put jpp in there too.
3 Oct 2012, 09:43 am
@willievz-70:
ahh you beat me to it.
dangerous backline indeed.

@Dawn-67: No, I don’t think it’s Poppa’s fault. Old ST BURP only has hatred for bleeding white liberals, on who’s shoulders the collapse of the white race now hinges…..

@stormersboy-61: Griquas.

onthou, persentasie rugby is julle ding…
3 Oct 2012, 09:49 am
@i_love_u_bakkiesbotha-53: I don’t think you clearly understood what I was trying to tell you. You use HM as a messiah who knows it all, but he has already proven that he knows very little about picking players, creating and balanced gameplan, and all those other goods things. His selection of players have been made with very blue tinted glasses. To my mind this means that he is selecting players that do not deserve to be there to start with and in doing so he should resign immediately. He then trials them for a few games and then steps them down to the bench or gets them carrying bags after they cost us games. He also seems to think that allowing players on the pitch for 5 minutes benefits someone? F’knows who. Those guys would have been better off playing in CC. The improvements that he has made have all been accidental and forced by circumstances at the cost of many failures. He is not innovative and clearly limited in mental capacity and should not be coaching our national team.

Ahhh, the gingers. Sneakylittlefuckers….responsible for most of humanity’s hardships (if folklore holds any truth of course).
3 Oct 2012, 09:57 am
@garth-84: Correct. Most of the improvements in the Bok team in terms of selection etc have been accidental, injury enforced…….
Glad there is someone else who isn’t falling for the Miracle Maker’s hype.
3 Oct 2012, 09:57 am
G’day all
I hope Jantjies sign with the Stormers. Van Aswegen is injury prone, so who the hell will they play at 10 before Grant comes back?
Lambie better suited at 10 imo and the Sharks have enough cover in Bosman and Viljoen… and at 15 via Ludik..
Strange that they signed Van der Merwe at lock. Dont they have enough depth in that position? Hope Steph du Toit gets more game time…
Taute will be the next player going… Why would Mapoe go to the bulls? They have more than enough centre’s or will he go back to playing wing?
3 Oct 2012, 09:57 am
@The Sharks rugby pedigree is packaged as dog food-86: Don’t forget the lefties.
The word “sinister” comes from the Latin word “sinistra” which means left handed.
3 Oct 2012, 10:03 am
@willievz-70: @i_love_u_bakkiesbotha-77: Yes, my bad. Forgot all about their best backline player. But even with JPP, I’d play Elton at 10 and Lambie at 15.
Backline would look something like this:
9. Reinach
10. Jantjes
11. Mvovo
12. Steyn
13. Jordaan
14. Petersen
15. Lambie
20. McLeod
21. Viljoen
22. Ludik
Sorry for Ndungane, Bosman and Whitehead.
3 Oct 2012, 10:07 am
@garth-84:
I agree HM made some mistakes and might be a bit narrow minded in his selections, but most coaches makes mistakes and get selections wrong in the beginning…or even get it wrong until the very end…(PDV:Smit, Matfield, MS etc)
People seem to forget JW’s bad selections… January ahead of Pienaar and even FDP…Jaco van der Westhuizen and back then Smit wasnt even rated the number 1 hooker.
Its still too early to judge especially when things seem to evolve, unfortunately evolving quite slowly… If he keeps on making mistakes for the next 2 years, then id say fire the guy!
3 Oct 2012, 10:09 am
@stormersboy-89: I’m left handed……No wonder I am the vision ST BURP sees in all of his ‘fokopalypse’ dreams.
Left handed, bleeding liberal Marxist, white female……..(if I was a ginger, I reckon there would be a war party hunting me down as I type…)
I can see why he would lay the blame for the genocide of ‘his’ people on me…it is clear now
3 Oct 2012, 10:09 am
@i_love_u_bakkiesbotha-83: I thought you liked kicking flyhalves, such as Morne?
@katman-90: Whether or not you and I would select Jantjies at 10 and Lambie at 15 is irrelevant, Plum’s selection is the one that counts and he already stated that he prefers Lambie at 10.
3 Oct 2012, 10:10 am
@Jeez-91: Januarie, in 2005, was the best 9 on the planet.
Certainly not a selection mistake by JW there.

@The Sharks rugby pedigree is packaged as dog food-76:
The 4 Irish and 2 Scottish clubs are going to be the ones to suffer financially with England pulling out of the HC. Currently, the Irish clubs get about 4 to 5 times the amount that the English clubs receive individually. That’s one of the reasons they’ve been able to afford overseas players.

Lets just hope those incidental improvements stick and influences his bias to make better selections in future… No more MS, Spies and Potgieter…
Would Spies have played if he didnt get injured? MS if Goosen was still injured?

According to public opinion it didnt seem that way… Those are just examples and can be debated at length, the point is no coach ever gets it right..
