Goosen’s season is over

Goosen’s season is over

Johan Goosen will be sidelined for the rest of the year as he undergoes surgery on his knee on Tuesday.

The 20-year-old Springbok flyhalf suffered a Grade 3 medial tear in his left knee during the first half of the Rugby Championship Test against the All Blacks last weekend.

Goosen confirmed to keo.co.za that he will go under the knife at 12pm on Tuesday. The final decision was made after doctors and specialists had different opinions on Monday.

It was believed that without surgery, there was still a chance for Goosen to recover in time to feature during the Boks’ end-of-year tour to Europe in November.

However, surgery will allow the player to enjoy a full recovery. He is expected to spend three months on the sidelines.

Goosen has had an unfortunate run with injuries in 2012. He suffered a dislocated shoulder during the Cheetahs’ 36-33 loss to the Highlanders in Bloemfontein in April. He also struggled with a heel niggle during the Rugby Championship.

Goosen’s absence will allow Morne Steyn, Elton Jantjies and Pat Lambie to compete for the Bok No 10 jersey during the November Tests.

    @Horings-588:
    “They were successful with super rugby teams…”

    How is that success helping them now?

    @Horings-590:
    Well, SARU is not going to give two year contracts to a group of players and then you can sommer ignore them and select others.

    Lots of money in the water if you do that, don’t you think?

    @Horings-597: BUT all of Pieter Rossouw, **** Muir, Allistair Coetzee, Carlos Spencer, Hawies Fourie, etc have better CVs than Ricardo Loubscher, hence me saying he was not appointed on merit.
    they all were not interested as well i believe

    @Treehugger-595: there was no reason for him to pick goosen after being out for 4 months & only having played 40min of currie cup rugby, not when he’s got jantjies & lambie there!

    same with Taute, Meyer picks the Lions 15 who just came back from injury @ 13 & leaves Mapoe – the Lions red HOT 13 – to carry tackle bags…who forced him to make that STUPID call?

    @Horings-597: i for one did not understand the big deal regarding the Meyer appointment. We hired a guy without any Test Rugby coaching experience, even at an assistant level.

    @Horings-597: But I was wrong on my instinct. Thought Matfield, Juan Smith and Joe van Niekerk was part of that first NZ game. Forgot Matfield was snubbed by Jake.

    The point is Vermeulen, Coetzee, Etzebeth all made their debuts in Meyer’s first season and it did not turn out too badly for them.

    @Horings-599:
    Sorry, that is his age. He played his 2nd game vs the AB.

    So, take 24 caps away and Meyer’s pack still ends up on 137 caps, just 5 less than that of JW.

    @Horings-588:
    It is not about Ricardo being an AA appointment with no credentials or not, it is about guys like you only criticizing him for the failures of the Boks while you conveniently forget that there are other assistants who is not doing a good job also, despite their achievements in the past.

    You think the Aussies should not be critical of Deans because he has a good record at Super rugby level and because he was “appointed on merit?”

    @BokkeYouBeauties-608: I think Alberts should
    concentrate on being an impact player ala Rossouw. He seems to have a couple
    of huge game, but is burned out very quickly. He was awesome against the Poms.
    We need Juan Smith to make a successful comeback and take over the captaincy.

    @nama1-611: Then I apologise. I think my first comment was something along the lines of Meyer should concentrate on getting a world class support team and when I mentioned the backline coach I meant a world class backline coach like Jones will be great. Koen should also be replaced by van Straaten. I think Pieter de Villiers (the good one) is the only coach that can hold his head high after HM’s first rugby championship. I am not sure a better defensive coach is available and I do not know the extent of van Graan’s influence, but I think a better attack coach can be approached.

    @Horings-613: I like Alberts on the bench or to start at 4 Lock. He is athletic as flanker but in short bursts.

  • 619.Horings: Reply to this comment

    @nama1-615: I think Smit, Matfield and du Preez should take some blame. I think Matfield thought he knew more than McCaw thinks he knows. The All Blacks are just so much more used to success. Matfield, du Preez and Smit were starting to act like Gregan and George Smith at the end of their era and Dalaglio and co at the end of theirs. You do not see the same from the ABs.

    No probs.

    How many 4 try bonus points have the Bulls conceded this year while McFarland was there?

    I remember the Brumbies outscoring them 5 tries to 3 despite the fact that the won the match. :lol:

  • 622.Horings: Reply to this comment

    @nama1-621: Ja, I think our defense was our strong point in his early days at the Bulls, then we had one year where we won our first couple of games with a scoreline in the region of 50-40 and since then our defense have been shaky. No doubt Stormers defense had been the best since the Queensland teams of the nineties.

    Bulls defenses have been good in finals rugby throughout the last decade and I thought the reason for our lack of defense at some time were due to intensity week in week out. I believe this is one of the strong points of the Stormers defense as well as technique at the gain line.

    Yes, ALL Black players know that it is a privilege to wear the black jersey, not a right. Some Bok players believe it is their godgiven right to be selected after a while.

    @ryecatcher-620:
    Somebody mentioned earlier today that Koen is trying to change the kicking styles of the kickers (p. 301). If that is true, he is totally to blame for the kicking woes of all our kickers, including the 21 missed points in Dunedin.

    I guess it is like a golfer who is changing his swing. It will take a while before you see the results. Best you do it during the off season, not while you are playing an important tournament like the RC.

    @Horings-619: I wonder if the All Blacks have a special school where they learn how to get away with naughty stuff on rugby field. Fair enough we had the ref on our side but faaak me, those penalties were warranted, highlight of the game for me was the binning off of Dagg, it was like a relieving pis at half time after you’ve downed 5 pints.

    @BokkeYouBeauties-626: Do you think the tackle on Bekker deserved a card? I thought it was pretty dangerous. It seems only Hougaard got a red for a tip tackle this year, but others get away with murder. Also remember Kirchner got a red for a tip tackle in 2008.

    Also important that Nic Groom comes through at SH because I believe that was where we were lacking the past 3 years.

    @corporal punishment-630: LOL, 6 love is an expression. I don’t think in my lifetime have boks had a clean sweep in a tri nations, which i know says alot about New Zealand rugby, but really its trying times for both SA and Aus.

    @BokkeYouBeauties-631: Aaaah, got you. It’s going to be bloody hard to ever get 6-nil again. Home and away fixtures like these, there are so many banana skins. Really, the AB’s should have been 5-1 in this series, they slipped on a banana skin in Dunedin but somehow managed to avoid the painful fall onto the concrete!

  • 633.BokkeYouBeauties: Reply to this comment

    @Horings-627: Definitely dangerous stuff, there was a fair bit of foul play that will never be picked up tho, such is the game.

  • 634.corporal punishment: Reply to this comment

    @BokkeYouBeauties-626: Oh come on, there was no ruck when Dagg picked up that ball so he shouldn’t have been penalised. If the ref had given you the half a dozen penalties you fully deserved by that point in the game, Dagg wouldn’t have been carded anyway. It was only because the penalty count was so lopsided (due to the onesided nature of Rolland’s performance) that the AB’s got a team warning.

  • 635.Horings: Reply to this comment

    @nama1-629: Although Meyer will not change the “gameplan” he will want the Boks to develop their execution and I think Aus/NZ backline coaches are best equipped to better our execution. NZ focuses on the small things, such as every pass being in front of the player next to you resulting in flowing moves. How many passes do Jean de Villiers give that is behind the player next to him? That is why I do not like JdJ.

    I watched a game where du Preez was in his prime and his accuracy and length of his pass was on the spot all the time.

    @BokkeYouBeauties-631: Interesting that we never lost all our games in the Tri Nations, but NZ did in 1998. One record we can hold on to.

    Although we bounced back against the Boks the next year, the Aussies continued to have our number right through to 2003. That REALLY stung! Bloody Gregan!

    This EOYT is going to be a banana peel for Meyer.

    Ireland have beaten us 2 out of the last 3 times over there.

    England have not beaten us since 2006 (10 games) but the draw in SA will certainly give them hope to end the losing streak.

    Scotland denied us a grand slam the last time we were there with an unexpected win over the Boks.

    I can certainly see us losing two if Meyer does not get his act together.

    @corporal punishment-638: 20 years the All Blacks were on top most of the time, but they had competition most of the times. Last year I predicted the Boks and the All Blacks will struggle with player retirement and the Aussies will have some advantage, but the opposite occurred. McCaw did not retire and it seems he will not for some time and the Aussies had a number of terrible injuries.

    Now it seems no team is close to the All Blacks and Dunedin turned out to be slip from the All Blacks and not a trend setting occasion.

  • 642.Horings: Reply to this comment

    @nama1-640: I think we should beat the Scots this time, but the other two may well end up not too well. Ireland is the team that came closest to beating the All Blacks this year and England was very close each time although I believe we have developed much more. JP Pietersen will be back, but the Currie Cup will claim some more injuries.

    @Horings-642: I think you should be aiming for 3 out of 3. Your forward pack is more than a match for the Irish and the English – you will have the wood on them in that area. You just need to tighten up your defence in the backline (although neither Ireland or England will expose your backline in the way the AB’s did on Saturday, and even that was a once in 10 year performance by the AB’s).
