Goosen’s season is over

Goosen’s season is over

Johan Goosen will be sidelined for the rest of the year as he undergoes surgery on his knee on Tuesday.

The 20-year-old Springbok flyhalf suffered a Grade 3 medial tear in his left knee during the first half of the Rugby Championship Test against the All Blacks last weekend.

Goosen confirmed to keo.co.za that he will go under the knife at 12pm on Tuesday. The final decision was made after doctors and specialists had different opinions on Monday.

It was believed that without surgery, there was still a chance for Goosen to recover in time to feature during the Boks’ end-of-year tour to Europe in November.

However, surgery will allow the player to enjoy a full recovery. He is expected to spend three months on the sidelines.

Goosen has had an unfortunate run with injuries in 2012. He suffered a dislocated shoulder during the Cheetahs’ 36-33 loss to the Highlanders in Bloemfontein in April. He also struggled with a heel niggle during the Rugby Championship.

Goosen’s absence will allow Morne Steyn, Elton Jantjies and Pat Lambie to compete for the Bok No 10 jersey during the November Tests.

@phil72-340: Fred played mostly CC during the 2011 season. This Super Rugby:

Bulls – Pat fh – Fred at scrumhalf
Stormers – Pat fh – Fred at scrumhalf
Lions – Pat fh – Fred at scrumhalf
Reds – Pat fh – Fred on bench
Tahs – Pat fh – Fred on bench
Brumbies – Fred at fh – Pat out injured with a mouth injury
Canes – Fred at fh – Pat out injured with a mouth injury
Blues – Pat at fh – Fred on bench
Chiefs – Pat at fh – Fred on bench
Force – Pat at fh – Fred on bench
Landers – Pat at fh – Fred on bench
Cheetahs – Fred at fh – Pat out with flu
Stormers at tank – Fred at fh – Pat at fb
Lions – Fred at fh – Pat at fb
Bulls – Fred at fh – Pat out injured with ankle
Cheetahs – Fred at fh – Pat at fb for half a game then out injured with same ankle injury
Reds – Fred at fh – Pat out injured
Stomers semi – Fred fh – Pat out injured
Chiefs – Fred at fh – Pat at fb

Can you see now? Pat Lambie played mostly fh for Sharks this year and not FB. We only used Fred when Pat was out injured or if Plum needed both players on at the same time.

Think we wanted Jantjies as we need to top class fhs. Super Rugby as you know is very long anything can happen if there is a injury as it did this year to Lambie. I think Jantjies will go to Stormers which is better for both him and Lambie they both need to start at fh for most games.

    @Kaizan-331:

Your original comment started off with a jibe at people who called for Goosen to start vs AB’s.

My response was that that was the best option given the situation MEYER has created by making the wrong selections and lacking vision at the start of the International season.

So it’s no enlightenment on your part that Goosen shouldn’t have been there, it’s unfortunately the results of a coach struggling to find his feet and sticking to and outdated rugby philosophy.

If you’re looking to blame somebody then you know where to turn to now.

With the exception of 3 or 4 players they were pretty arrogant and unfriendly. Unfortunately I’ll always remember that.

    - Pottie at 7, Alberts at 8
The player didn’t step up and he was subsequently dropped. HM thought/ hoped the guy will raise his game. He didn’t. Next time he’ll see a Bok jersey is when he is a monster maybe… at this stage the chances are 50/50 that he will one day be a above average player.

    – Selecting & dropping Keegan
What can you. Was he wrong for picking him or dropping him?
Keegan is and was around the fringes. HM was always goign to go for a harder bigger type player.
I would play him, Keegan, above most. And have Johnson as back-up. Although Vermeulen didn’t do too badly.

    – JJ Englebrecht over de Jongh, drop Engelbrecht pick de Jongh on the bench, pick Taute – in a position he only played in junior rugby and in 2010 for the surrender monke.y Lions in a season they lost ALL their games – over de Jongh.
    Shame, De Jongh.
JJ is a different type player. maybe HM does not rate De Jongh that highly, or prefers big ugly centers… JP Nel, Jaco Pretorius, Dries Scholtz :)

    – picking Goosen after a lengthy injury straight into the Bok team against Cheetahs medical stuff advice!
Boks don’t have their own advice? He was selected to play. Who else did you want to see there again? Lambie, Morne, EJ?

    - playing Goosen when his heel is fecked!
Mercy. I doubt it wasn’t considered in the final analysis

    - Dean Greyling selection
Ok, because his name is Dean, we are supposed to know he is going cause himself and the team embarresment and possibly the match. The guy was already a Bok once before.

    – ALL of Heyneke’s SUBSTITUTION decisions starting with the England series, PUTRID
(Putrid is not really a good adjective in this sentence btw.) Easy in hindsight.. We still didn’t lose. Although we could have probably played better and won the last one all things considered.

For the normal time of Super Rugby before we made the play offs when Pat was injured. It was Pat that started most games at fh. It irates me that some think that Pat was mostly used at fb. Especially that idiot Gavin Rich writing exactly that. He thinks that Plum mostly used Lambie at fb this year and not fh. I just had to prove a point there that Lambie was our 1st choice fh this year and he was also last year. Eish and now my fingers are sore. Takes forever for me to type that……….LOL.

Hey I saw our cappie today earlier while out. Looking in great condition. Why he is not in the Bok squad is just crazy.

    Lambie at fh this season.

    Bulls (lost 18 – 13)
    Stormers (lost 15 -12)
    Lions (win 32 – 20)
    Reds (win 27 – 22)
    Tahs (lose 34 – 30)
    Blues (win 29 – 23)
    Chiefs (lose 18 – 12)
    Force (win 53 – 11)
Landers (Lambie was mom here) (win 28 – 16)

    Played: 9
    Won: 5
    Lost: 4

Apart from the win/lost ratio, the Sharks were really playing abysmal rugby at the time. Their performance against the Chiefs especially must be one of the most inept performance by a Shark team in their history.

No wonder Meyer did not look to Lambie as a possible candidate for the FH berth.

Good news though is that he can try again next year to show that he is the best no. 10 in the country.

nama… the positves are that HM should know better what to do now.
The scrum looks pretty decent. options covered in most places.
Backline positions much clearer – who should and who shouldn’t

HM will have a proper look at the squad he chosen for RC now,, analyse with his favourite PVR moves,, slot in a few returning players inbetween the ones that played all over the show,, sort out the ideas he had coming into the job,, and think up a few new strategies.
i think the most hectic period for HM is probably over now… it should get better before it starts getting worse.

Also we won a CC beating the Stormers with Lambie at fh and beating Bulls in the semi in 2010.

@nama1-372: If Lawerence had blown fair against Stormers in the 2nd game we should have won that. We had 12 penalties against us there and I for one don’t think there were 12 penalties there. Kaplan too blew us out of the park against Bulls. Nama for pete sake Lambie never picked up the penalties that cost us those games it was mostly Chadwick. Be fair to this youngster man, he is a brilliant fh.

  • 381.Bagel: Reply to this comment

    @Bagel-379: Apologies I hadn’t refreshed in awhile.

  • 382.Puma: Reply to this comment

@Bagel-379: 5 games. It was not Pat that lost us those games. In the first two games it was Bissie, Keegan and Chadwick that gave penalties away. It was NOT Pat’s fault we lost. Also looking at those games again have no idea why some penalties were given against us.

We also won a CC final against Stormers and a Semi with Pat at fh. Give this youngster a break. He is a brilliant fh and really no need for him to be taking flack here.

  • 383.Bagel: Reply to this comment

@Puma-380: “A brilliant flyhalf”, you can keep saying it mate, doesn’t mean it’s gonna come true.

One hand off on Schalk and a ‘Sunset Cover’ for SA Rugby magazine does not equate to brilliant.

For me he’s pretty good, passes well, kicks for poles reasonably but his creativity and tactical kicking pales in comparison with that of Janjties and Goosen.

The question with Jantjies is, how did he perform at FH despite playing in a losing Lions team? I think we both know the answer to that question.

Lambie did not perform consistently well while he was playing at FH, Puma. That’s just a fact. Another fact, despite him playing in a much better team, he also did not perform better than Jantjies.

@Bagel-381: Those losses were due to the penalties that Bissie, Keegan and Chadwick gave away. Not Lambie’s fault we lost those early games. Well I am talking about when we played Bulls and Stormers. Against Tahs it was the team that went to sleep there as we were well into the lead. Against Chiefs at the Tank we there too were the better side but lost it right at the end. NOT Lambie’s fault damn it man. How can you blame him for those losses?

Fred was terrible against the Canes the reason he was sent straight back to the Bench when Lambie came back from injury for the Blues game. Fred was brilliant and then just really awful for games. As brilliant a player Fred was he was just not always consistent. Lambie was consistenly good at flyhalf.

I see some of you fellows are taking offence at the young guys “disrespecting” the Boks, what did you expect when a coach is a liar?, when a coach selects JJ Engelbrecht ahead of both JDJ and Aplon, the later 2 were the reason left WP/Stormers, they were smoking him at Province and Super Rugby level. Again selects Jaco Taute ahead of JDJ.

Taute injured himself half-way through Super Rugby, yet he found himself on the starting line up ahead of a player who was selected for the Boks twice ahead of him by the same coach and was deemed not good enough to start, a player who on his debut against the biggest centre in world rugby, Jamie Roberts held his own and scored a reaper of a try?

Do you expect JDJ to look at Taute and Heyneke Meyer with any respect?

Same for Jantjies, he’s done it all, won the CC, Super Rugby, toured with Boks, then a green horn who is yet to do half the stuff Jantjies has already achieved gets to walk into the starting line up based on what exactly?, future talent?, you must be having a joke.

When JDJ and Jantjies were piping hot, they were told to wait their turn, then green horns who have done little or nothing exceptional get to walk into the starting line up? What the Phark do you expect?, respect??, you must be phaken taking a p1ss
