Kings crowned champs

The EP Kings edged the Pumas 26-25 in the Currie Cup First Division final in Port Elizabeth.

After it was confirmed earlier this year that they would be elevated to Super Rugby in 2013, the Kings are now buoyed further after an unbeaten campaign. They will now contest the promotion-relegation play-off for entry into the Premier Division.

They turned in a strong second half showing after trailing 13-10 at the break, and even though the Pumas outscored them four tries to two, they refused to relent, flyhalf George Whitehead kicking 11 points courtesy of a conversion and three penalties.

The hosts were made to endure a nervy last few minutes when Pumas fullback Coenie van Wyk scored a converted try with a minute left to play but the Kings managed to hold on for the win.

@suffer_guy-3: Kings with 7 injuries? Is there a team that doesn’t have that sort of list at this stage of the game? And this Pumas team has buggerall to do with the Lions team they beat last year. Are you having a slow day?

26-25 ? Kings at home against the Pumas ? THE PUMAS ? I can only imagine there was a little help in this result as well. Doesn’t matter, they won’t beat Cheetahs or Griquas for that matter. Not if they only pip the Pumas by 1 point.

    Pity.

Would have been great for the Pumas to win.

Pumas missed to many kicks at goal in the first halve, they where the better team on the day. But congrats ro the Kings, they played well in the second halve.

glad the Kings “scraped into” the top spot by going unbeaten all season.

the cheetas will have to pitch for that game.

Regardless of provincial bias, it is better for SA if the Kings are stronger. We don’t want to get totally embarrassed in the S15 next year. Kings could surprise one or two people.
