Province power into play-offs

Province power into play-offs

SIMON BORCHARDT saw Western Province thrash the Free State Cheetahs 36-15 at Newlands to set up a Currie Cup semi-final against the Golden Lions at Ellis Park.

The hosts had a simple objective coming into this match – win to get into the play-offs and remove the possibility of having to play two promotion-relegation matches against the EP Kings (which the last-placed Cheetahs will now almost certainly have to do).

WP welcomed back seven Springboks and Free State two, which became one on the 23-minute mark when tighthead prop Coenie Oosthuizen left the field with what appeared to be a back or neck injury.

Province’s first two tries were both scored by Boks, with Jean de Villiers diving over in the right-hand corner after a clever chip kick from Gerhard van den Heever had been collected by Nick Groom 10 phases earlier, while Andries Bekker was perhaps lucky to get the green light from the TMO after he seemed to lose the ball over the line.

When flanker Deon Fourie was driven over from a rolling maul just before half-time, the hosts were out to a 22-3 lead. WP coach Allister Coetzee clearly thought the win was in the bag as he substituted Bekker soon after.

Province added another two tries in the third quarter, though Fourie and No 8 Duane Vermeulen, before flanker Francois Uys and replacement back Philip Snyman scored for the Cheetahs in the final five minutes to repair some of the damage to their points difference (as far as the log is concerned).

  • 16.stormersboy: Reply to this comment

@mikeybrass-14: We’ve seen way too many floating passes which accomplish nothing, just give the defence time to drift and cover.

    Joe does that perfectly.

  • 17.mikeybrass: Reply to this comment

    Outstanding defense on Rhule, Habana,

  • 18.mikeybrass: Reply to this comment

@stormersboy-16: Joe is hugely under-rated. Better than Kitchner and Lambie at fullback imo.

Coenie is injured. Looks like his lower back.

  • 20.stormersboy: Reply to this comment

@mikeybrass-17: Ja great back tackle by Brian.

On the Joe point, i agree with you. he brings much more to a team than Kirschner which is why I’m a bit perplexed by the Jaco Taute move.

I would love to have jaco in CT, but I wouldn’t give him a guarantee starting 15 spot.

Also nice to see Kitshoff owning Oosthuizen.

    Better Loosehead every time.

  • 21.mikeybrass: Reply to this comment

Coenie was taken out by Eben at a ruck. His back was injured as he hit the ground.

  • 22.mikeybrass: Reply to this comment

@stormersboy-20: I don’t believe the media. AC will be able to swop players around – JdV and JdJ, Aplon, Joe, Taute, etc. He can rotate.

What a rubbish TMO decision. It was clear that he lost the ball. Even the TMO agrees about this. How can the fact that part of his hand was still touching the ball result in a try? Explain this to someone new to the game – they’ll laugh at you.

  • 31.mikeybrass: Reply to this comment

@stormersboy-24: JdJ and Taute as the long-term centre pairing would be cool, with Bache as the backup 12.

  • 39.stormersboy: Reply to this comment

@katman-30: It’s technically correct. all that has to happen for a try to be scored is downward pressure. He does not have to have control of the ball as in the past.

He had lost control for sure but the ball was still touching him. No daylight if you get what I mean.

    @mikeybrass-31: Where is JP going?

  • 40.W.P: Reply to this comment

@ suffer_guy : FS will find it difficult to win let alone you blaming a TMO decision on one try

LOL Cheetahs not getting a chance at scrum time.

    WP light 5 no longer.

  • 42.katman: Reply to this comment

@mikeybrass-34: And why do they give these drooling windowlickers the task of making TMO decisions? 4 out of 5 times, when our TMOs must decide, they mumble and fumble through not only their basic knowledge of the rules, but also their basic knowledge of the language. They don’t get what the ref is asking and they don’t know how to explain their wildly inaccurate take on the law.

  • 43.mikeybrass: Reply to this comment

    What a maul!!!! TRY!

  • 44.stormersboy: Reply to this comment

    Superb!!!!!

@katman-42: He explained the situation perfectly. He had lost control but was STILL touching the ball when it was grounded. Technically perfect.

  • 45.katman: Reply to this comment

@stormersboy-39: That’s clearly wrong then. The first thing that happened was that he lost the ball to the ground. The fact that part of his hand (and not even the open palm and or fingers) was resting on the ball should not result in a try. And if the ref panel reckons it does, then this law needs serious attention.

  • 46.mikeybrass: Reply to this comment

@stormersboy-39: Ja it’s technically a try and the TMO’s explanation was clear. However, it is a stupid rule change imo.

There was talk that JP is off to the Sharks, prior to any talk over Taute.

Ginger is playing with the Cheets pack.

LOL, you didn’t actually think that WP would lose this game and have to endure a play-off did you?
Did you also think that Taute’s cap had nothing to do with his signing for WP?
Do you think that ‘flat pass’ for WP is that and not 5 meter’s forward (JdV threw no passes in the RC that weren’t forward or into the stands).
Still amazed that WP supporters think there team has ‘got what it takes’ after zero silverware since Moses was driftng down the Nile – but still have ‘The best players’.
Do you think it’s of no consequence that the Bok performance is indirectly proportionate to the number of WP players in the squad (year after year)?
‘Catch a wake-up’ seems so lame in the face of reality year in, year out. Sigh.
When will people get a brain (I’d be happy if they get 2 brain cells to rub together).

I hate to be one of THOSE killjoys, but I can’t help feeling the same about WP as I do about the ABs when it comes to favouritism. It’s not an evil conspiracy – no one called a meeting and decided on a plan. But they’ve been talked up in the media for just about a century as the darlings of SA rugby, much as the ABs in world rugby. Each player has this crafted media persona with nicknames and off the pitch interest stories. The commentators get sucked into this mess too, creaming their chinos at everything that Jean or Schalla or Bekker does. And sadly, so do the refs and TMOs. Their latest crush is Deon Fourie, and his “revelation” at 6. All this means is that they make him this self-fulfilling prophecy, in that he gets granted the leeway at ruck time to excel the way everyone wants him to. Just as McCaw is. It really doesn’t sit well, and is the reason why it’s so easy to dislike teams like WP and the ABs.

Will you get to Durban to see any live games this season? I told the guys here last weekend I saw John Smit play, I believe it was his first game for about 6 months.

Keep up the good work at the sanctuary, those critters need you! :-)

Bet you see the local girls walking about in mini skirts and vest tops in the snow in London and wonder how they survive!!

I am not so hardy! It is boots and a scarf for me.

@i_love_u_bakkiesbotha-129: I have been worried about the Bulls in previous years but this year I am super confident. Bulls will get sent home with a hiding and hopefully it shows just how kak some of Heyneke Meyers blue eyed boys are. Sharks at full strength will trample the Bulls with their fragile, useless flyhalf and their diabolically poor fullback.

@Dusky-143: Sharks the form team for sure, but come playoffs it can sometimes go in an unexpected direction.

But barring a large upset, looks like a Sharks hosted final.

@Carol …those days are long over for me, am grateful just to be able to watch games on TV no. Only leave the property to do the things I do and meetings, which is far to often.

If you get down Durban way though I will make an effort to come see you, but just depends.

Yup as i called, kid had a great game

  • 155.Dusky: Reply to this comment

But they will endure with those players. As I said, the Loftus loyalty to some players regardless of their form like the ultra useless Derick Hougaard always puzzled me. Its that ‘Ossewa – ons vir jou’ sacrificial mentality. Other Loftus lieflings were Anton Leonard (average at best), Ettienne Botha (reasonable player) and at the moment – Pierre Spies, Mornetjie Steyn…..all average to kuk players.

    you’re probably right.
sharks playing good rugby with a settled squad. especially like their offloading, fluidity of passing, running, support play. the form final really should be sharks – lions, with either likely to be champs.

bulls have been stop start, very erratic and prone to struggling if the kicker is kak.
i’m hoping they click on the day, or dig deep and grind it out if not.

@i_love_u_bakkiesbotha-157: Problem for you guys is the urge to play Morne at 10 is too big. Although he is probably better than Fouche to be honest.

Congrats Wp and their supporters, good victory, One can say Cheetahs were KAK, but you can only play whats in front of you.

minute 78: try – albert van den berg (sharks)

minute 79 : missed conversion – frans steyn (sharks)

minute 79: substitution (tactical) heini Adams for Fourie du Preez (bulls)

minute 82: try! – bryan habana (bulls)

minute 83 conversion – derick hougaard (bulls)

    minute 83: full time

    minute 84: BOOM!

    bulls 20 – sharks 19

@i_love_u_bakkiesbotha-166: That my buddy was in a completely different era for the Bulls. The canyon between the quality of that Bulls side vs the Bulls now is already huge and still growing. So try stay within context. Not only do you guys not have Bryan Habana but also not a drunk Steve Walsh.

  • 168.Dusky: Reply to this comment

I only mention Habana because he scored the try. Also missing are Bakkies, Victor, Fourie, Gary, Gurthro, Danie……..and the guys you have coming through are so far quite average at best.

I haven’t read the entire thread so I hope I’m not repeating a point. I wouldve loved to see Juan de Jongh at 12 with JP du Plessis at 13 or just maybe that happens next week. That sounds more exciting that the de Villiers de Jongh combination. Old man de Villiers must be shown the door. He doesn’t allow a no13 to shine. WP & Bok rugby was just lucky that Fourie was that good at 13. But well done to WP. Now if they can loosen the proverbial noose from their neck so that we don’t choke …
