Province power into play-offs

SIMON BORCHARDT saw Western Province thrash the Free State Cheetahs 36-15 at Newlands to set up a Currie Cup semi-final against the Golden Lions at Ellis Park.

The hosts had a simple objective coming into this match – win to get into the play-offs and remove the possibility of having to play two promotion-relegation matches against the EP Kings (which the last-placed Cheetahs will now almost certainly have to do).

WP welcomed back seven Springboks and Free State two, which became one on the 23-minute mark when tighthead prop Coenie Oosthuizen left the field with what appeared to be a back or neck injury.

Province’s first two tries were both scored by Boks, with Jean de Villiers diving over in the right-hand corner after a clever chip kick from Gerhard van den Heever had been collected by Nick Groom 10 phases earlier, while Andries Bekker was perhaps lucky to get the green light from the TMO after he seemed to lose the ball over the line.

When flanker Deon Fourie was driven over from a rolling maul just before half-time, the hosts were out to a 22-3 lead. WP coach Allister Coetzee clearly thought the win was in the bag as he substituted Bekker soon after.

Province added another two tries in the third quarter, though Fourie and No 8 Duane Vermeulen, before flanker Francois Uys and replacement back Philip Snyman scored for the Cheetahs in the final five minutes to repair some of the damage to their points difference (as far as the log is concerned).

We need to keep up the strong pack showing and a decisive moving backline in the second half.

Perhaps pull off our Boks around the 60 min mark.

    @stormersboy-35:
Hes been very good. Best 6 in SA? Ye maybe considering Brussow, Cotzee, Kolisi all not been playing in CC as well as guys like Flow blaying abroad, not the greatest of opposition.

@katman-45: Seems like a travesty in this case, true, even if technically correct.

Kitshoff killed Coenie dead @ scrumtime. It was actually Coenie’s attempted tackle on Etsebeth when he came on a standoff where he got injured.

@Guns-53: Marcel plays 7 for the Sharks. Agree that 6 is Flow’s best position.

@mikeybrass-56: Yes thats right.I think he did play 6 a few times though at the start of the season but his actual play def more like a 7/8. Flow def a 6 then again he does pretty much the same Job for Bath as a 6 just wearing 7…

@Guns-64: ja I think he’s been injured several times this year. Not sure where he is in terms of fitness at the moment.

    Still a good player.

I hate to be one of THOSE killjoys, but I can’t help feeling the same about WP as I do about the ABs when it comes to favouritism. It’s not an evil conspiracy – no one called a meeting and decided on a plan. But they’ve been talked up in the media for just about a century as the darlings of SA rugby, much as the ABs in world rugby. Each player has this crafted media persona with nicknames and off the pitch interest stories. The commentators get sucked into this mess too, creaming their chinos at everything that Jean or Schalla or Bekker does. And sadly, so do the refs and TMOs. Their latest crush is Deon Fourie, and his “revelation” at 6. All this means is that they make him this self-fulfilling prophecy, in that he gets granted the leeway at ruck time to excel the way everyone wants him to. Just as McCaw is. It really doesn’t sit well, and is the reason why it’s so easy to dislike teams like WP and the ABs.

@stormersboy-71: I just think of that fcken Newlands stadium announcer, and that pretty much sums up how I feel about Cape rugby. It feels like one big Paarl Gym old boys club, where everyone’s dad has a wine farm and everyone’s mom has her hair done twice a week. No thanks.

cheetahs facing possible relegation to the first division, yet will contest super rugby next year.

lions, reigning cc champs, likely to be cc premiere division champs or second placed team this year, but will not be contesting super rugby next year.

    strange day indeed….

and it will only get stranger, with the kings in the super mix from next year.

this has all the ingredients for what could be a kickass local soap opera ala the wild.

At this point I would like to remind Skop that I told him Fourie was a better 6 than a 2.

  • 83.katman: Reply to this comment

@stormersboy-76: Hey, he’s not a bad player, and that was a well worked try. But I can pretty much guarantee you that half the steals he makes at the rucks would have been blown up up as penalties for the other team if he was a less fashionable loosie from, say, Kimberley. Ditto for McCaw’s ruck success.

@Treehugger-86: The WP pack is formidable with the returning Boks, No weaknesses anywhere.

Their dominance isn’t at all surprising.

The cheetahs have only had to give up two players, we had to give up 8 for some weeks.

this is mostly true but the obvious point of major departure between the ab’s and wp is that wp do not have the wherewithal to cheat their way to success.
