Bok duo to miss tour

Bok duo to miss tour

Lock Andries Bekker and hooker Tiaan Liebenberg will be out of action for the rest of the year because of injury.

Bekker suffered a toe injury and Liebenberg hurt his back during WP’s Currie Cup victory over the Free State Cheetahs at Newlands last Saturday.

Both players were expected to miss the Cape union’s domestic play-offs, but it’s been reported that they will also spend a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

According to the Beeld, Bekker is out for six to eight weeks and Liebenberg is out for two to three months. This will see them miss the Bok year-end tour in November.

It’s been an unfortunate run of injuries since the Rugby Championship for Heyneke Meyer as flyhalf Johan Goosen (knee) and prop Coenie Oosthuizen (back) have also been ruled out of the trip to Europe.

Chilli should be picked ahead of Liebenberg anyway…
If they are heading to Europe why not call on Mostert…?

Unless we get our talisman and enforcer Bakkies Botha back into the team, the Boks are looking at a very dire tour.

Kanko and Daniels would thrive on this tour. Our backline is the weakest it has been in several years so it would make sense to field several fast and mobile forwards to assist Donkey de Villiers and the rest of the palookas in the midfield.

Who would you pick at inside center ? How long is FSteyn out for?

Paul Jordaan and Juan de Jongh.

So many injuries coming now. We still have two semi finals and a final to play, with the bulk of the Boks in those teams. Who will be left standing at the end of the semi and final? South African derby games are one of the toughest in world rugby. We could possibly have even more injuries before the eoyt.

I am not looking through my black and white glasses now, but really Bresler has been in brilliant form this whole year. I think HE deserves a call up for the Boks eoyt.

    @Predawn-9:

They are both 13s… Apart from FSteyn and JDV SA doesnt really have a lot of depth in this department…

    Id second that…

@Predawn-9: Cant wait to see the 12 FSteyn 13 Jordaan combo for the Sharks next season… If they click well, this could be an excellent bok center pair.

    @Jeez-13: Thanks bud.

I just feel he has been overlooked and has been one of the locks that have been performing the whole year on a high standard. Hope Meyer selects him for th eoyt.

@Jeez-14: Yes I am too. Even with Whitehead and Jordaan they played superb against the Reds. Though Fransie brings something even more to inside centre and with Jordaan playing at outside think we could very well see the best centre pairing in SA with them.
Also don’t forget the half backs with Lambie and Reicach. Bring on Super Rugby….hahaha. Can’t wait.

Coetzee has destroyed Bekker’s international career.

  • 19.Puma: Reply to this comment

@Jeez-12: Whitehead played well at inside centre this year for Sharks. Not in the same class as Fransie though, but still he played superb there. Serfontein at the Bulls does he not play inside centre? Or is it outside? Also like the 12 playing for Province right now. Not sure of the spelling of his name Brach I think. Also one to look for next year.

Martin Muller at Griquas should get a look in, he’s been the best lock in the CC this season followed closely by Ligtoring Landman.

  • 21.Brigadier Van Zyl: Reply to this comment

I disagree that Coetzee has buggered up bekkers career.

I doubt Bekker has played more than 35-40 games in the past 3 seasons.

that’s positively part time compared to someone like Morne who’s in the 100-120 bracket..

@Jeez-14: They should be a joy to watch!! (in the words of Bill McClaren). Jordaan is really a special player. Reinach is developing nicely as well. He inherited his late father’s speed !!@Puma-19: Brache: yes he has had a good season for Province. I’d like to see how Serfontein will develop: he is a 12 and big – my only fear is that he will be used to bash it up too often. It is one thing to do it against under 20s but against the likes of Nonu etc might be a problem. I’m also concerned that he will gain too much more weight (because of gym training) and that it will slow him down. The same applies to the youngster Rohan van Rensburg (?) who played for the Bulls as well as SA Schools earlier this year

14…is reinach the fullback for the bulls u20 side.

  • 24.Puma: Reply to this comment

@CharlesM-22: Yes have to see how these youngsters go in next years SR. That will be the test to see how they cope. Jordaan so far has had that test and played superb in SR. He for now is the real deal. Looking forward to seeing him play with Fransie in next years SR.

Agree Serfontein probably will turn into a bash it up style 12 at the Bulls. He was excellent though at the Junior WC this year.

Thanks for the name there, Brache looks very good as well. Pity that JdV will play there for Stormers next year. AC should give some game time to the youngster next year. He has played well in the CC.

@Brigadier Van Zyl-23: Reinach we talking about here, is the young scrumhalf from the Sharks.

I hope WP / Stormers are doing all in their power to retain D Fourie…..he would be a massive loss to Stormers and have a seriously detrimental affect on our Superrugby aspirations…..

    The squad I would take:

    15 Patrick Lambie
    14 JP Pietersen
    13 Juan De Jongh
    12 Jean de Villiers
    11 Bryan Habana
    10 Elton Jantjes
    9 Ruan Pienaar

    7 Willem Alberts
    6 Francois Louw
    5 Juandre Kruger
    4 Eben Etzebeth
    3 Jannie Du Plessis
    2 Adriaan Strauss
    1 Tendai Mtawarira

    16 Chilliboy Ralepelle
    17 Pat Cilliers
    18 Flip Van Der Merwe
    19 Marcell Coetzee
    20 Francois Hougaard
    21 Morne Steyn
    22 Jaco Taute

23 Deon Fourie / Craig Burden
24 Steven Kitshoff / CJ Van Der Linde
    25 Jean Deysel
    26 Dewald Potgieter
    27 Jano Vermaak
    28 Paul Jordaan
    29 Lwazi Mvovo
    30 Gio Aplon

kitshoff and deon fourie are leaving sa so i doubt they will be called up.

jdv and jdj have to be the most sterile centre pairing in world rugby,

    the rest looks good.

    @rangerman-31:
Where did you hear that about Kitshoff. Aren’t you confusing him with the flanker, who’s a Namibian player?

  • 33.Dazzler: Reply to this comment

    @rangerman-31: @David-32:

Rohan Kitshoff, the flanker, left. (for the 100th time)

    Steven is not going anywhere.

I’d leave Dewald Potgieter out, and bring Arno Botha instead of him. I would also try make space for Raymond Rhule in the squad.

I’m not surprised by this. Super and Test rugby is brutal on players. Ask the Arsetralians; McKenzie will have to run on as a prop if he’s not careful.

Has Meyer planned for this. No sign of it. Why does he pick and drop players; Straeli like? Vark, he should be developing an extended team, all contracted to SNAFU, all being exposed to Bok training and tactics.

I rather suspect that he and his coaching team, don’t know how to really manage and coach players. They’ve never had to as there has always been a conveyer belt of talent. Now it’s apparent that the product off the conveyer belt is still plentiful but it needs tweaking; drastic tweaking. Meyer has never had to do this, so he doesn’t know how to, he just keeps throwing each part away, hoping the next one off the line will be better. Bonehead stuff.
